Life with his new CAT went swimmingly for months. Nino was a great help at work and an even bigger one at home. He hadn’t lied, he was able to cook and clean and seemed to enjoy doing it. Sho found himself looking forward to what kinds of dishes the CAT would prepare for them and he found himself going home earlier at night and not wanting to leave in the morning. The CAT also brought things, decorations for the apartment. It started small, a few potted plants and pictures before he was starting to redecorate saying the white walls and bare floors reminded him too much of the lab. Sho had left his apartment and Nino for four days and came back so soft mint green walls and a fluffy carpet in front of a fire that hadn’t been there when he had left.

It was nice but was even nicer was having Nino curl up beside him in the evening and purr. He didn’t want to treat him as though he was a pet cat but there were days when he just couldn’t help running his fingers against his ears as Nino fell asleep against his chest. Sho knew that he was falling in love with the CAT but he didn’t know Nino’s feelings towards him. He knew that Nino liked him he would often say that he was his favourite person in the whole world but he also liked Satomi, Masaki’s wife. The pair were as thick as thieves within only a week of meeting and the CAT would automatically go to her side whenever she came in a room he was in. Masaki thought it was adorable and had wanted to get a CAT of his own. Satomi had threatened him with divorce if he brought another one and she became a very vocal and active member of the anti-CAT-slavery movement.

Sho loved reporting on any and all of the events she attended. Her management hadn’t even attempted to silence her as they knew that she would happily walk away if it was something that she truly believed in and she believed in this. Of course, it didn’t mean that it would change anything quickly but Sho had thrown his support behind it too. For a moment there had been a wobble in their support when it had been discovered that Sho had a CAT of his own and that Masaki had brought him. But Nino had proudly declared that he wasn’t a pet, that he had a job and he was a friend, that although Masaki had brought him, he had done so only to rescue him from the Lab.

Of course, Nino’s past behaviour in the Lab had been brought up, that he was almost feral and a liar and dozens or more well behaved CATs were marched out to say that they were treated perfectly and that they loved being CATs. It seemed like an uphill battle but Sho was proud to be on it. He looked over at his CAT now, Nino was playing one of his many video games and talking to somebody in an online chat. The CAT loved talking online because nobody knew who he was and that he was a CAT so they didn’t treat him differently and from bits and pieces Sho heard he was rather respected as a gamer.

“Nino? Are you almost done?”

“Yeah...One second! We have almost killed the dragon...I can only save it then...” Nino answered covering his microphone before pressing a few buttons on the controller. “Yay! I did it!” The CAT screamed loudly and proudly as the computer animated Dragon let out a roar and died. “Okay! I gotta go now! See ya” The CAT said cheerfully to those he was playing with and Sho heard a series of disappointed groans from the game. “Bye-bi” The CAT didn’t even seem to notice the sounds and switched off his game before getting up from the floor and padding over to him. “Sho-chan! Is everything okay?”

“Um, yeah...I just needed to talk to you. I’ve got a new assignment...”

“That’s cool!”

“Yeah, but it means going away...For...For two months...” Sho said hating himself as the CAT’s face seemed to crumple in on itself. “It’s a really great assignment though. It’s a travel series about life on a cruise ship...I’m going to be doing all the tourist things...”

“You will be gone away from me for two months!” Nino hissed turning away from him and running to the bed. He dived under the covers and put a pillow over his head. It wasn’t a good fit given his ears got in the way but it was cute, just one of the many cute things that the cat did, and Sho almost couldn’t stop himself from smiling. He got up from the sofa and headed to the bed saying;

“Nino...”

“Nope! I don’t want to talk to you! You hate me! You are going away forever!” Nino’s voice was muffled by the pillow over his head and his tail was going frantic under the cover, twitching this way and that as he gave a very animalistic growl. “I don’t want to be here by myself for two months!”

“Nino, you won’t be...”

“Why? Are you going to ship me off to Masaki’s and Satomi’s?” Nino spat his tail poking out from under the cover now and Sho almost reached out to capture and hold it tightly but he knew how pissed Nino got when he played around with his tail when he was mad.

“You like staying at Satomi’s” Sho hummed forgetting what he was about to say for a moment at those words and Nino poked his eye out from under the pillow.

“That isn’t the point! I want to be with you! I don’t want you to go away! You will go away and forget all about me...”

“Nino, I want you to come with me” Sho told him quickly before Nino could finish any more of his rant. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you feel like you weren’t coming. I just meant that...Well...You’re not...You’re not allowed a passport...You have to be checked over...And have shots...I’m sorry...”

“You want me to come with you?” Nino asked excitedly jumping up out of the cover missing everything else Sho had said and Sho gave a nod. The CAT had more mood swings than a teenager but he was adorable with them. More so when he jumped forward and hugged him rubbing his face against his in a happy way purring happily. Sho decided to enjoy the moment thinking they would worry about everything else later. “Yay! Um...Sho-chan...What’s a cruise ship?”
