Ten Years Later.
Ten Years Later.
Prince Ohno Satoshi, named for his father stood in the centre of the Jade Garden. It was his father’s favourite place and Satoshi the younger loathed it. It was the very definition of over indulgence made with the finest polished woods and running crystal clear water with Lotus flowers dancing on the surface. It was the only part of the palace that allowed access to the harem with over fifty women living within. Another reason as to why Satoshi hated this place. His mother was his father’s only true wife and he was the only true heir, but Satoshi knew that his father at least a dozen or bastards with the various women here. The children were treated no better than the servants but Satoshi knew that they were there.
The garden was the symbol of all that was wrong with the country. The palace flourished while the people outside the walls suffered first with famine and then with a sickness that nobody could cure. Hundreds had died and nobody knew how the palace had escaped from the blight but it fuelled the Emperor’s belief that he had the divine right to rule and that the Gods watched over him. For the rest of the country it was proof that he had made deals with the devil. Satoshi, who would often leave the palace under a guise would hear the muffled bitter conversations of half dead men. His heart ached for them and it was worse when he was here in this Garden.

His heart ached for them and it was worse when he was here in this Garden.
The calls of the women of the harem reached his ears and Satoshi scowled darkly stalking through the large double doors and into the main sanctum of the harem. Gold and polished red wood shone brightly in the early morning light and his senses were drenched in that of overly sweet scents of perfumes and scented water. It was sickening to him and he tried his best to only breathe through his mouth instead of his nose. A tinkling of laughter and a much louder male sound reached his ears and he moved towards the sound knowing that it would be his father or one of his most trusted who might know where the emperor was.
The man he found was not his father but his uncle. An overweight, once attractive man, with more scars than hair. Half of his nose and his ear had been removed by a sword. It would have been tragic if Satoshi hadn’t hoped that the wound would have been more serious than it had been. Satoshi moved to stand in front of him, brushing off the several of the women that came to them offering their services. The idea of taking a woman to his bed that had lain with his father repulsive in the extreme.
“Uncle where is my father?”
“How should I know? Do I look like his keeper boy?” The man snarled his hands fixed firmly into the opening of one of the woman’s gowns. The lady of the court didn’t appear to mind but her face was so heavily painted that Satoshi doubted he would be able to tell her true expression.
“Uncle, I haven’t been a boy for many years” Satoshi growled hating the term boy. He always had. His father and those men of the court that liked him, would use it to try and undermine him. It had never worked but he had grown to hate it.
“The emperor, your lord father rarely stays within the Harem, my lord” The woman at his uncle’s side stated politely as though his uncle hadn’t started to suckle on one of her breasts. That information surprised Satoshi though the only indication of that which showed on his face was a lifting of his eyebrow. “He goes to the tower, my lord”
“I see, thank-you” Satoshi jerked his head in the direction of the woman before turning smartly on his heel and stalking out of the harem. There was no need to ask what she meant by the tower. There was only one tower within the entire compound and that had been built ten years ago. His father had claimed that it was a defence against attack, that a higher vantage point would offer them some protection against rival clans but as far as he or anyone else in the palace knew nobody had ever seen anybody in the tower and even more strangely there were no windows that could be used to look out over the lands.
The tower was guarded at the bottom though and almost immediately from the weapons that was in their hands, Satoshi knew that they took their jobs seriously. He chewed on his lower lip staring up at the tall tower. It was a huge building with flat unclimbable walls and only a few holes every now and then to allow ventilation the roof was a grey stumped dome and although it had been built in a hurry it was well built and would survive most attacks. He had never been all that interested in the tower before, putting it down as just one of the many strange things that his father did.
There were rumours of that his father had used the powers of a witch in the last great war. Satoshi didn’t know the truth of the matter, he had been too young to take part in the battle after all, but he wouldn’t put it past the man. He had been driven to madness during the last war, it hadn’t taken much as he was already half mad anyway, but he had tried a great many different things to try to secure the throne that he sat on now. A witch would be one of the least notable things in Satoshi’s opinion but it was the main reason that people believed that the Older Satoshi was in league with the devil.
Satoshi moved towards the tower only to stop when the door opened and the two guards stationed out front moved apart to let the emperor out. The man looked...Sated, a smile on his face that caused Satoshi’s stomach to turn. He didn’t know why the whore in the tower was so favoured but it didn’t matter to him. He moved towards his father forgetting about the tower for the moment to think of more important things.
“Father”
“...My dear son, what do I owe the misfortune of having you visit when I am feeling so relaxed?” The older Satoshi sneered at him the smell of alcohol and bitter bodily fluids hitting the prince in the face as he slipped an arm around his shoulders. He tried not to recoil at the smell and hold the contents of his stomach but it was a difficult thing.
“Your enemies are banding together in the West father...The heads of all the noble houses are sharing power...”
“I see, and what do you suggest that I do with this knowledge, boy?”
“Together they are a threat...”
“They are no threat, boy, one day you will learn that...Their armies will fall just as the rest have done..." The emperor laughed punching him in the arm and Satoshi growled at the insufferable confidence that coloured the man’s words. “Now go back to your mother's skirts boy...Unless you finally wish to have fun...”
“No, thank-you, father...” Satoshi bowed his head and ducked away from the man knowing what he was getting at and not liking the thought of it at all. As he walked away he saw his father returning back to the tower and Satoshi wondered...Wondered if the rumours were true and perhaps there was a witch residing within.
