Five Years Later

Satoshi moved through the water gracefully, his movements weren’t as skilful as Nino’s, but Nino told him that he wasn’t bad for somebody that had been born on land. It was strange to think that he had once been a land dweller as the Mer called the humans. Although he had been only in the water for a short time he felt more at home in the ocean than he ever had on land. He had missed the few friends that he had made but Nino’s family…His mother, father, brother and sister had all welcomed him warmly and Satoshi believed that he had made firm friends with Jun and Sho. Jun was married to the princess Kazuko Nino’s twin sister.

The pair were almost identical, and Satoshi was sure he wouldn’t have been able to tell the siblings apart if not for the fact Kazuko’s tail wall a soft lavender colour and her hair longer. Mer hair was different from human hair he realised quickly after only being in the water for a few days. It was more like a fin than actual hair for all that it looked like it and the mer could control it to make themselves able to move faster in the water. It was all amazing and he knew that there was still more to discover. Sho was Masaki’s husband. Masaki being the eldest son was still expected to be king when his father died but Jun and Kazuko’s child would be named heir.

“Satoshi…Are you coming?” Nino asked from somewhere behind him. Satoshi turned around and looked at his lover. Even after five years Nino still took his breath away whenever he saw him. His tail looked even more beautiful in the water and Satoshi swam towards him. His hand immediately moved to the tail stroking him slowly. “Fish fancier...”

“Nino-fancier” Satoshi corrected his words coming out as bubbles and Nino gave a laugh and then moved in for a kiss. It was soft and loving, different from the one they had shared in the hot tub that first day but, in Satoshi’s opinion, it was a much better. Nino’s tongue slipped into his mouth his tail gently swirling back and forth to keep them both afloat. As they kissed Satoshi cast his mind back to five years ago when he had first come into the ocean.

They had made it to the sea front without incident. They had caught the train easily enough and although there had been a moment when Nino thought that he had seen the scientist near the promenade but eventually they had gotten to the water. Nino’s expression was surprising, Satoshi hadn’t expected him to look so...Happy. The merman had closed his eyes about five minutes ago and taken a deep breath. His hands had reached above his head stretching out his back and just basking in the breeze that was coming off from the sea. Satoshi watched him in awe for a moment or two and then swallowed looking out at the ocean. It was a cool day and the ocean was a deep murky grey colour with large churning waves. Satoshi felt nervous about what was coming, it had been easy to say that he trusted Nino in the safety of his warm comfortable apartment but it was another thing altogether to be presented with the ocean like this.

“Are you ready?” Nino asked softly pulling him out of his thoughts and Satoshi looked at the little merman almost flushing when he saw that he had already started to strip. “If you want to back out, I understand...”

“No, no, I don’t I’m just...I feel awkward...How...How can I swim underwater? How will I breathe?”

“If you trust me, you can...If not then...”

“I do trust you, I’ve only just met you but I trust you...” Satoshi hummed grabbing the merman’s hand and refusing to let him go. Nino smiled and then swallowed stepping out of the last of his clothes.

“You’re wearing too much...Clothes are restrictive in the water...If you’re worried, I won’t look” Nino grinned cutely, putting his hands over face but peeking through his fingers. Satoshi let out a laugh relaxing again as he started to take off his shirt and release the buckle on his trousers. Satoshi slipped them down over his legs and Nino was a little more obvious in his looks now. Satoshi had never been self-conscious about his body, he had always taken care of himself and he knew that he was physically attractive, it was somehow different with the merman watching him however and he felt nervous as they moved into the water.

It was cold around his legs but Nino didn’t give him much time to get used to it, with his own legs already changing Satoshi could understand why he was moving so fast but he had to stop when he was neck deep. A wave rolled over him almost knocking him off balance as it brushed over his face. Nino was swimming beside him with his beautiful golden tail almost visible under the water and Satoshi found himself stroking it with his fingers.

“The last time I was in he ocean like this with you, you were saving my life...I can trust you...” He mumbled and the merman gave him a smile and a nod before bringing his mouth up to cover his in a searing kiss that was much more breath taking than the one they had shared in the hot tub. As they kissed Nino moved them further out into the water and eventually Satoshi could no longer touch the bottom without his head being covered. Still Nino kissed him his hands holding his face firmly.

Breaking from the kiss Satoshi felt his body jerk with panic as he needed oxygen and he tried to move up to the surface but Nino held him down, his hand wrapped around wrist until the last bubble of air left his mouth and all he was taking in was water. Everything seemed to go dark in front of his eyes and then Nino moved forward and his lips were covering his again. Not in a kiss this time but breathing into his lungs. It was strange but eventually he felt calmer again and he breathed back into Nino’s mouth almost like a diver using an oxygen tank.

Pain was the next sensation he felt, white hot pain along each side of his neck and he thrashed around in the water only to discover that he no longer had legs but a tail. He couldn’t see it clearly but he thought that it was a dark blue with large spiky fins. Nino moved from him and instead of panic he felt...Amazed. Somehow he had been turned into a merman.

“Welcome to the rest of your life, Ohno Satoshi...” Nino smiled and Satoshi moved forward kissing the merman firmly as he tried to get used to the sensation of having a tail where his legs had been.

It had taken him a week to get used to everything, Nino had been at his side the whole time gently teaching him everything he needed to know before taking him deeper into the ocean where his family lived. They had been welcoming though Jun hadn’t been friendly at first. Eventually he learnt that it was just his way, he cared about Nino a great deal and was worried that they wouldn’t last and Nino would be hurt. Satoshi had tried his best to show him that wasn’t the case and five years later Jun was a close friend.

“What are you thinking about?” Nino asked as he took his hand and they swam back to their family.

“You and how perfect you made my life...”

“Fish fancier” Nino snorted but Satoshi could see that he was embarrassed from the cute way he blushed. Satoshi let out a laugh pulling the merman in close and pressing a kiss to his cheek. His life under the ocean was better than his old life ever had been and he was so grateful that he had found the merman in his hot tub that day.
