“And forth came a rider on a white horse. The figure had a bow and a quiver of poison arrows. A crown was given and fourth the rider rode out to conquer…When he broke the second seal I heard a living creature saying; come and another, a red horse, went out; and to him who was sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him…” Sho read the scrolls carefully. They were written in an ancient tongue that he had the barest knowledge of and many of the words were lost to time and age. He could gather the gist of what was being said though and a chill was moving up and down his spine. The ancient man had thankfully stayed to help him and was swiftly, at least for his age, was reading through the books that Sho had earlier and was marking out pages that he thought were relevant. “So, humans believe that this is how the world will end? Four horsemen?”

“Many do, not all…I personally don’t believe it however, I do believe that there must have been something…Something tangible for the story to linger as much as it did” The Liberian hummed looking up from the book he was studying to look at him from under his large bushy eyebrows.

“I have lived a long life, never have I seen a demon such as this…”

“Many will go through a long life and not see a vampire. Just because you haven’t seen it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Such a creature would be far older than you, my boy” The old human wheezed waving a dismissive hand in his direction. His eyes, grey with age held a light of amusement and Sho supposed that that was true. He sighed with a growl slamming his hand against the papers jerking when the man whipped out a hand as fast as lightning slapping his knuckles. “Those papers are old. Show some respect”

“Sorry, I’m frustrated. There is nothing to say what can stop such a creature and if I can’t stop him then how do I save my brat?”

“…There is always away to kill something, Master Sho, you’re just looking in the wrong place…”

“How do you know my name?”

“I know more than most” The man smiled showing surprisingly clean even teeth, his eyes crinkling in the corners stretching out his face even more. “Your brat, he is the son of Pestilence…”

“His brother says that he is…” Sho answered with a shrug not caring how the man knew that. His aura had changed now, although he still looked old there was an unaged quality about him. He wasn’t a vampire, that Sho knew, but what he was he couldn’t say.

“Death. A good heart in that one. Life and Death…Go hand in hand. Like a great circle. If you have one, then why can’t you have the other?”

“You are saying that Nino is the living embodiment of Life?” Sho felt a little stunned that he hadn’t already thought of that. He had seen it for himself, hadn’t he? The wooden furniture coming to life and flowering. The way he had saved Masaki’s dog…The thing was more lively than it had been for years even Masaki had remarked that some of the greys had gone from its fur. The man at his side let out a wheezy laugh closing the tome he was reading with a loud thunk which echoed around the empty library and sent dust flying.

“What other being could complete Death? He knows not his true power yet, but he will…You will show him…”

“What are you?” Sho asked with a lifted eyebrow, annoyed when, like Satoshi had done, the old man just gave him a mysterious smile his grey eyes flickering with a golden glow before he said in a soft voice;

“Just an old man who likes to watch the world. Nothing more, nothing less…Read what I have marked for you, young man, and then rest yourself it is a long journey home and you must go quickly…”

“Fine…But I don’t see how what you have marked will help, I already when through that book and didn’t see anything…” Sho grumbled pulling the book towards himself, feeling his eyes already starting to cross. The unhelpful librarian let out a warm laugh getting up from the table and walking back towards his desk saying over his shoulder;

“Because you weren’t looking for what you needed…”

Sho rolled his eyes but opened the book to the first marked page. His eyes bulged a little as he realised that what was now written hadn’t been there when he had first read the book. The scrawled handwriting had changed into a neat little copperplate making it much easier to read. He glanced up hoping to catch sight of the man, but he was gone from view and Sho cleared his throat stretching out his back before starting to read. A few sentences in Sho realised that he was reading about Nino’s life before he had come to him that wintery night.

*~*~*~*~*

Satoshi stared at his father. The man was hunched over grinning manically at a globe on the table. Pestilence had been staring at it for many days and each time he did, Satoshi’s heart grew heavier with cold. He knew what the globe was, it was a mirror to the mortal realm. Through it he could see anyone he wanted with just a wave of his hand. He had one of his own, but he rarely used it. Pestilence dragged an ugly tongue over his lips his eyes sparkling as he gazed at whatever human it was in the globe.

“I SHALL BE GOING OUT…” The man growled pulling him out of his musings and Satoshi blinked at his father nodding his head slowly and moving to one side to allow him to get a cloak from the peg by the door. The man’s face was so disfigured that he donned a large hat to hide his face and once he was done he vanished in a whisper of putrid smoke. Making sure that the man would not be returning Satoshi moved to the desk and waved his hand over his father’s globe making it show him what he had been seeing.

A woman with fair skin and raven hair sat on a river bank. Her eyes were alight with laughter as she watched a dog splashing around in the water. It was yapping, happily chasing around a swan that didn’t seem to mind. A flower was set in her hair and Satoshi had to admit that she was quite possibly the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. His heart grew heavy as a figure appeared behind her wearing a hood and a thick black cape. He knew what was coming and he didn’t want to witness it.

Poor woman. Poor Satoshi. Sounds like Ohno and Nino may have to double team him? They are two sides of the same coin.🤔
