“Hello, Ninomiya-san, Ohno-san, how are you both?” The doctor asked as he swept into the room. The midwife had just finished her checks, none of which told him that he was indeed a bearer and that he was pregnant. His heart jumped at the sound of his voice, but he stayed quiet looking to Satoshi who gave a smile.

“I’m fine, Kazunari is a little nervous, he thinks there has been a mistake and that he isn’t really pregnant” The older man hummed gently squeezing at Nino’s hand and the doctor gave a laugh nodding at the midwife who vanished out of the room with a huge grin on her face.

“I see, so shall we have a look?” The doctor gave a hum and moved to the bed carefully moving Nino’s hospital robe aside to reveal his stomach. Nino felt goose-pimples break out over his skin and his cheeks flare red knowing that there were several brightly coloured love bites over his stomach. For all that he said he would behave Satoshi loved his stomach and made sure to tease it when they were making love. “I have to run some other checks but let’s have a look at the baby…”

“Baby? You can already see it?” Nino knew that his voice was weak, barely even audible in the small ward but the doctor heard him and let out another laugh taking a strange jelly cream from the side.

“It won’t be very clear, but it will be enough to convince you, ne?” There was a loud rattling from the door as the midwife came back with a machine that had a probe on it. She plugged it in and messed around with the settings while the doctor started to uncap the jelly he had brought down earlier. “Okay, this is going to be cold…” Nino shivered as the jelly was poured onto his stomach and rubbed around. It was mostly down near his pants and he flushed a little as the fabric was moved aside. “Ready to see your baby?”

“Yeah…I guess…” Nino whispered while Satoshi inched closer to the machine. Nino smiled, his heart in the back of his mouth. The doctor chuckled and then took the probe the midwife offered. Nino sucked on his breath his eyes closing tightly as the probe was pressed to his stomach. A strange clicking filled his ears and Nino breathed through his nose gasping when Satoshi squeezed at his hand.

“Kazunari, you should open your eyes” Satoshi whispered his tone coaxing and soft. Nino shook his head feeling the probe moving around his stomach pressing in deeper in some areas until finally stopping by the left side of his belly button. The probe moved in a slow circle and Nino breathed shallowly as he shook his head.

“I don’t want to…”

“You should if you don’t want to miss your baby” The doctor murmured lightly pressing the probe into his stomach a little further. “Can you see that little black blob, Ohno-san?”

“In the corner?”

“Yes, that is your baby” The doctor hummed, and Nino found his eyes flying open, so he could look at the screen. It was like a small TV but in black and white with what he assumed were his internal organs and in the corner was a small black blob.

“It…Looks like ET” He breathed in wonder unable to believe his eyes. The doctor and midwife laughed as the doctor tried to reposition the probe against his stomach to get the baby into a better position on the screen.

“They all look like that at this age. It is a little too soon to see it clearly, but it is in there, believe it now?” The doctor asked, and Nino gave a small nod looking at Satoshi who was staring at the screen with a wide eyed, almost glassy expression on his face. He looked as though he was about to cry, and Nino squeezed his hand.

“Our little ET, happy Papa?” He asked pulling Satoshi’s attention to him and Satoshi cleared his throat blinking rapidly as he nodded and pulled his eyes away from the screen. He hadn’t expected the chance to look at the baby today, so he could understand why Satoshi looked stunned. Satoshi moved down and pressed his lips to his forehead in a kiss before saying;

“Very happy. Thank-you”

“No point thanking me, you had as much to do with it as I did” Nino huffed his eyes going back to the screen where his baby was still on screen. It was so tiny, just a blob in the vast emptiness that was his womb, but it was there, there and real and inside of him. His baby. The baby that he had been talking to. It was so real, so very real, and he didn’t care that a tear slipped down his cheek.

“Would you like a print out of the screen?” The doctor asked, and Nino slowly nodded very slowly wiping his face with his hand. The doctor hummed and then nodded at the midwife who attended to the print out. “Right, we should get on with the rest of the examination”

“Um…Yeah…I guess…” Nino whispered regretfully as the screen went blank as the probe was removed from his stomach.

“Let me wipe you and then we can check your channel” The doctors tone was gentle but professional and Nino closed his eyes laying back against the bed and tuning out what was happening at his lower half. The midwife came in a little while later baring a trio of images of the baby and Nino stared at them ignoring the feel of the doctors’ fingers probing inside of him. “Hmm…I see…”

“See what?” Satoshi asked so Nino didn’t have to, but the doctor ignored him continuing his examination. It took a while but eventually he finished up and took a step away from the bed. There was an almost grim expression on his face.

“I’m afraid your channel is completely underdeveloped. It makes sense as to why the doctor missed it” The doctor told them, and Nino pulled his eyes away from the photos in his hands, his heart sinking like a stone inside his chest. His fears from earlier coming to the forefront of his mind quickly as though he was having a panic attack.

“What does that mean for the baby? Will I be able to deliver it?” He asked, and the doctor shook his head very slowly.

“Not naturally. At least at not unless your channel opens throughout your pregnancy. It is possible but for now I suggest that we move forward with plans for a C-section” Nino swallowed a lump from the back of his throat nodding slowly. A C-section was far better than some of the things that he was imagining. “We will keep an eye on you throughout but other than that everything is going perfectly. I am worried that you’re a little pale, so I am going to order some blood tests, but it is nothing out of the ordinary”

“Thank-you doctor”
