Masaki was putting the finishing touches to what he thought was a spectacular trifle when he heard the distinctive sound of the front door opening and closing. Feeling a little surprised as Sho wasn’t due back for another hour or more he wiped his hands on a tea towel he had used as an apron and walked to the entryway listening to the sound of Kazu thoroughly beating Satoshi on his video game. They seemed to have opened up to each other more since they had returned to the flat and Masaki was sure that Kazu was going to have a good friend in the sleepy older boy.

“Sho-chan? Welcome home…You’re early…” Masaki said brightly surprised when his fiancé stalked over from the door and swept him into his arms in an almost crushing hug. His face pressed into his neck and shoulder and Masaki was sure that his bones were about to creak as he gasped. “Sho-chan? Is everything okay?”

“Everything is perfect…You’re perfect…I love you…” Sho told him in a rush and Masaki let out a little, somewhat confused, laugh and hugged his lover back, his fingers moving up and down his spine over his coat. Sho swung him from side to side for a minute and then kissed his neck before letting him go and beaming at him so wide for a moment Masaki thought he was drunk.

“You’re in a good mood, Sho-chan”

“Of course, I am, I’m in love with the most amazing man on the planet and I’ve been promoted…” Sho announced and Masaki let out a happy shout and threw himself back at his lover hugging him once again around the neck.

“Eh?! You have! I knew that you would be! You’re too good for them not to realise! I knew you have nothing to worry about…” He gasped and Sho shook his head untangling himself from him again as he started to remove his coat, throwing it over the back of a chair before pulling at his tie.

“I had plenty to worry about, Ki, my boss tried to set me up on an omiai with his daughter and then got offended when I refused…” He informed him, and Masaki chewed on the corner of his mouth refusing to acknowledge the jealousy that ebbed its way into his heart. Sho was gay, he wouldn’t be interested in a woman, but he knew that his lover didn’t tell feel comfortable telling people. He knew that women and men thought that Sho was attractive, even at the hospital there were lots of his colleagues that would sigh and wish he were straight and single. “And then…I told him…About you…About me…Being gay…He knew you, Ki, from the hospital. The boy you spent the night with the other day in surgery, it was his nephew…”

“Eh?! Really?! Such a small world! The whole family was so upset, I think I did speak to his uncle. He was always acting like everything was okay and then he cracked…I took him one of those banana muffins I made for you…” Masaki rambled happily remembering the man clearly. He wasn’t the brightest of people, he would happily remember that, but he did remember the faces and troubles of the patients and families in his care. Sometimes people were amazed when he would remember them even a few years later. “Is his nephew okay?”

“On the road to recovery, he has invited us to his house for dinner when he is out of hospital.  They wanted to thank you…” Sho informed him and Masaki waved his hand smiling with a flush in his cheeks. He didn’t think he had done anything to deserve thanks, he had only done his job after all but people often liked sending him cards and he kept them all in a scrap book. “You…You are incredible”

“I’m nothing special Sho-chan…”

“You are, you’re an angel in human form and I can’t believe you want to waste your time with me…” Sho whispered. It was so strange to hear his lover speak in such an outwardly emotional way that he was lost for words. His heart thudded against his ribs almost painfully as tears collected in his eyes. The feeling only got worse when Sho dropped down onto one knee and pulled a small black box out of his pocket.

“Sho-chan…” He gasped his eyes widening as the lid of the box opened to reveal twin silver rings nestled inside. “What…”

“Aiba Masaki, will you marry me?”

“I…I…Uhn…Yes?” Masaki spluttered aware that he had already agreed to the rushed proposal earlier but finding this one more serious and romantic. His body seemed to shiver as Sho smiled pulling a ring from the box and slipping it onto his finger. It was a simple band of metal without any engraving or decoration but the weight of it and the way it shone in the dull light of their entryway made Masaki gasp. It felt strange against his other fingers, but it fit perfectly and quickly he pulled the other ring from the box and slipped it onto Sho’s finger. “I love you…”

“I love you more…”

“Not possible” Masaki gasped allowing his tears to fall fully now as he dropped to his knees and once again hugged his lover, sobbing openly only his shoulder until he heard the nervous, whispering voice of Kazu behind them.

“Masaki…Is everything…Okay?”

“Everything is perfect!” Masaki answered sniffing as he wiped his eyes on the ball of his hand before turning to look at the boy who was hovering in the doorway looking uncertain. “Your uncle Sho just proposed to me again! He gave me a ring, see?” Masaki moved to the boy holding out his hand and showing off the ring on his finger. “Isn’t it beautiful? Also! He got a promotion at work!”

“Yup! I’m now deputy floor manager” Sho told them proudly and Masaki flashed him a grin over his shoulder. “Also, I was given a few days off, so I can get things sorted…”

“Eh? Your boss is very generous, ne, Kazu-kun?” Masaki laughed happily getting to his feet again and ruffling the boy’s hair. “You should go have a bath and change, I wasn’t expecting you back yet, so I haven’t started dinner, I was making dessert, while I start dinner Kazu can show you the houses we saw…Did you get to the bank?”

“I did, and they are fine for us to move forward so long as we show them proof of our relationship and my new contract. My boss is getting that made up tonight and he will send it out by courier tomorrow…” Sho answered smoothly and Masaki tried to ignore the slight drop in the man’s smile for now deciding that they could talk about it later. “I also have the papers…Have you talked to your parents yet?”

“I was waiting for the restaurant to be closed. I will probably phone them in an hour…” Masaki answered with a shrug and a smile looking down at the ring again unable to believe it. He was about to speak again when his phone buzzed in his pocket and he pulled it out with a frown his breath catching as he saw the caller ID. Ikuta Toma. Jun’s colleague. Taking a breath, he nervously answered the call holding his phone to his ear as he said “Hello, Aiba Masaki speaking…”
