“Come here, puppy, let me hold you” Satoshi breathed shifting over the bed and holding his little werewolf as hard as he dared. Nino chuckled into his skin pressing his nose into the groove of his neck and letting out a soft tired breath. “Are you okay? You feel tense…”

“Tayhia said that my body won’t be permanently damaged but…How can she be sure? I don’t think anyone has ever survived silver poisoning before, what she did was nothing short of a miracle, so what if I can never transform again? I’m a werewolf, my wolf is my true self…” Nino breathed his insecurity clear in his voice and Satoshi wished he could smooth it all away. He believed in his wife but, as Nino had said, there were no certainties, no promises that could be made.

“I can’t promise you that you will be able to transform but I promise that you will still be you…” He breathed hoping that the words would be a comfort for Nino but somehow knowing that they would be a cold one.

“You don’t understand, I’m not saying that to be a brat, or because you’re a vampire but…I suppose it is…In stories of old they made out that the wolf was separate from the men that transformed but it isn’t like that” Nino hummed seemingly trying to get him to understand and Satoshi really wanted to. It hadn’t been something that he’d ever had to think about before. For most of his life, until he spent time with Domoto Tsuyoshi, he had believed that the wolf side was a curse. It was painful to transform but he knew enough to know that werewolves were their wolves in ways that he would never truly understand. “The wolf is me, and I am him…When I am in this form…I feel only half complete…It’s like losing a hand…Or a leg…I know that I am the same but…I’m not…Not really…”

“I’m sorry, puppy, you’re right I don’t understand. But…No matter what happens, I will be by your side and I am sure that Sho or Tahiya will be able to help you…”

“I think that Sho has done enough already” Nino growled, and Satoshi let out a sigh knowing that they were both thinking of the homunculus. It couldn’t be easy for Nino to know the truth about his boy and he could easily understand that Nino was wrestling with himself over it. Both Werewolves and Vampires were taught that such creatures were bad, but Masaki was everything they said they couldn’t be. “As for your wife. She has been incredible, and I have a great deal of respect for her, but don’t you think she has done enough? She preformed a miracle in getting me to survive in the first place…”

“Then we shall have to hope that there will be no permanent damage done, puppy. You are stronger than even you know, puppy, you will get over this…” Satoshi felt that the words were hollow to his own ears, but he said them anyway knowing that worrying wouldn’t help Nino in anyway. The werewolf let out a long-suffering kind of sigh and then whispered;

“I hope so. Because if not I am going to find it impossible to escape if things go badly with the king and you’re not in a great condition to fight.” Satoshi had to admit that that was true. He would have liked to believe that his love for Nino and the desire to create a better world would have given him the strength, but the truth was that he felt worse for wear and he was sure that even Sho would be able to beat him now.

“The king won’t be here for a few days yet, so I am positive that we will both be better by then” Satoshi hummed, once again hugging his puppy as hard as he would dare. “There is however the more pressing matter of Chinen and his revenge when he realises his plan didn’t work”

“Doesn’t he already know?” Nino asked his still slightly croaky voice muffled against his chest and Satoshi shook his head admitting in a whisper;

“The only people who know that you have recovered is Tahiya, her lover, and soon the king. We couldn’t risk Chinen coming in while you were being treated. Nobody in camp knows what you were suffering from, except Chinen, so your survival will shock him to the core” Satoshi hoped that he would be able to see the other vampire’s face clearly when he found out that Nino was alive.

“I’m sure he was disappointed that he couldn’t brag about what he had done” Nino growled, and Satoshi gave a nod of agreement. He could easily imagine Chinen preening and gloating that he had taken down the prince of the werewolves but sadly even he wasn’t that stupid.

“I’m sure he was smirking he whole time, but even he couldn’t get away with killing Sho’s prisoner” He spat, and Nino growled again, the sound reverberating through Satoshi’s chest. Satoshi stroked his hand up and down the young werewolf but didn’t stop him from growling. Nino wasn’t a violent person, but he was sure that he would make an exception for Chinen and Satoshi didn’t think that he would bother to stop him.

“Is there a reason he hates werewolves so much? Did his mother get killed in a raiding party?” Nino asked, and Satoshi almost wished that were the case. It would at least give Chinen some kind of redeeming factor, but it wasn’t the truth.

“His mother is still very much alive, as far as I am aware, she lives quite comfortably in the central stronghold” He admitted with a long sigh trying to remember what he had heard when Chinen wouldn’t stop talking to him. “Chinen is simply one of the stupid ones, puppy, he truly believes that werewolves are a lesser species and thinks that the only way we can gain victory is for every single werewolf to be killed…”

“He’s such a charmer, but I doubt he will be alone. Amongst the werewolves there are such people too, though I do believe that it is the older ones more than the young”

“Chinen is from an old family, the same as mine, we were taught that werewolves were guards and servants, we were taught to believe that you were beneath us…” Satoshi felt guilt flare up inside of him, but Nino chuckled and rubbed his nose against him saying;

“Don’t worry about it, I was taught much the same thing, Satoshi, I understand. But…I questioned it…The way that you did. I don’t want to be forced to live with the mistakes of the past. An eye for an eye just makes everyone blind in the end…”
