Even animals would come closer to Masaki than they would any other living creature. People of the town claimed that foxes and wolfs would protect him as he slept in he various glades around their home. Masaki thought that they were being somewhat silly, but he did have a great deal of animal friends that he had found and helped in the forest. Masaki found that animals were naturally drawn to him, but he figured that it was down to his God-Mother. His Godmother, a fairy that was well meaning but a little scatter brained at times, had charmed him and his brother when they had been born. Not even his mother knew the gifts that she had given them, but Masaki suspected for him it had to do with animals.
Singing under his breath he carried a jug down the winding path through the woods ignoring the chill that was trying to seep into his bones. The trees, free from the leaves which decorated them in summer, were bare and shivering almost as much as he was. Finally, he came to his destination, a slow-moving stream, and dipped in the jug filling it with crystal clear water. Still singing he looked around the bare trees missing the animals that would come and join him. It was strange that there didn’t appear to be any today. As he thought that a roar rose up from the forest. It was almost enough to cause him to drop his jug, but he kept a tight hold looking to the source of the noise.
Another roar, louder but, somehow, more pitiful rose to his left and he got to his feet. Carefully placing the jug onto a flat stone, he slowly tiptoed to the sound. It didn’t take him long before he found the source. A bear, a huge brown thing with large claws and teeth, was crouched on the bank of the stream his paw caught in an iron trap. Worry for the poor creature out-weighed his common sense and he moved forward quickly. The bear turned his massive head flashing each one of the large sharp teeth, but Masaki didn’t care.
“The hunters know not to put traps near our cottage!” He cried out dropping to his knees and pulling at the metal barely keeping an eye on the claws on the other feet. Completely unafraid of the beast he worked swiftly and soon there was a thunk of metal hitting the floor. “I will go to the town and tell them off! Your poor paw is very injured though. If you can just wait a little longer I will tend to it!” Masaki looked up into the face of the bear noting gentle, intelligent eyes. The bear was laying very still, seemingly trying to not to look intimidating and Masaki gave it a smile before ripping off a part of his shirt and dipping it into the stream. “It will hurt but I must clean it, or it will get infected and then it will kill you as surely as staying in the trap to starve! I really will shout at the hunters!”
Masaki chewed on his lower lip as he carefully wiped the wound. The bear let out a whimper and drew his large body back but other wise stayed still and allowed him to work. He tore more from his shirt, ignoring the feel of the cold lapping at him, and wrapped it around the wound. It wasn’t as bad as it could have been, and Masaki supposed that it was because the bear hadn’t pulled or gnawed at it trying to get free.
“I’m sorry if it hurts, but you will feel better soon!” He hummed gently before tying the last knot around the wound. Never having bandaged a bear before he wasn’t completely sure if he had done a good enough job, but the bear seemed happy enough as he rolled from his side and stood up. He couldn’t put pressure on the paw, but it must have been a lot better than it was in the trap. The bear studied him for a moment, the deep brown eyes almost boring into his, and Masaki smiled rubbing his face with his bloodied hands. “I wish you could understand, I would happily tell you that you must rest your paw! Don’t do too much! I will talk to the people of the town, but you must pay more attention to where you are going in future”
The bear seemed to nod its large head before slowly limping off into the woods. Masaki watched him go and then headed back to the stream where he had left the jug. He picked it up and swung it a little back and forth before heading back to the college wondering if his brother had woken up yet. It was unlikely as his brother slept very long in winter hating the cold, but Masaki would hope so as he wanted to go into town and speak to the hunters about the traps.
