Nino was right, Satoshi’s sofa was perfect for nursing the puppies and he found himself resting his head on his boss’ shoulder as he fed Misha and Rupert. His little Misha was a greedy little pup for all that she was the smallest and Nino delighted in the way milk collected around her mouth and the little snuffling noises that she let out.

“What will happen…When the pups are older?”

“They will be taken for their injections and arranged for a time that they can be sterilised” Satoshi answered sounding a little confused by his question and Nino swallowed his fingers carefully moving over Misha and Rupert’s head. He didn’t want to get attached, or at the very least he had told himself not to, just like his mother had told him when he was young, but it was impossible. He was already attached, and he would cry giving up his Misha and Rupert.

“And then they will be adopted?”

“Well, I was rather thinking that we…I…Misha and Rupert, I would love to keep all four, but I do believe that they are going to be boisterous fairly large dogs when they are fully grown, their mother wasn’t exactly small…” Nino shuddered sadly at the reminder of the pups’ mum. Yesterday Satoshi and Masaki had gone back to where the pups had been found with a spade and buried the poor creature the best they could with the ground frozen. “But I could keep two…Sho was looking for a dog and I’m sure he and Masaki will take care of either Bingo or Pippin…”

“And I could ask Jun if he wanted the other. He loves animals, but they hate him for some reason but…But…If he bonded to a puppy now maybe it wouldn’t hate him” Nino smiled his sadness at the passing of the mother dog leaving him as he hoped that his friend would want the pup and then all four of them would be well looked after and loved. “Two dogs and a baby. Sounds like it’s going to be busy…”

“We can manage it…” Satoshi hummed confidently, and Nino’s mouth twitched at the strange certainty that he would be with him when the time came. Nino snuggled into Satoshi’s shoulder and closed his eyes listening to the sounds of the pups drinking a little more for a moment imagining the same scene with two of the pups by their feet and a baby in his arms. The imaginings were enough to cause his heart to flutter with nerves and he quickly opened his eyes again. “You okay?”

“Yeah, I was just…I was picturing us sitting here in the future with our baby. It’s weird. Less than a week ago I hated you. Now I think I don’t think I could find anyone more perfect to have a baby with” Nino very nearly regretted the words as soon as they were out of his mouth, but he swallowed his pride and puffed his chest out in confidence to turn and look at Satoshi who had gone very still and silent. The older man’s cheeks had twin spots of colour n each of the centres and his mouth was slightly slack. He was looking straight ahead but Nino could tell that his pupils were blown wide with shock. Slowly Nino moved forward and placed a kiss on his cheek, or at least he intended it to be his cheek, but Satoshi turned at the last moment and Nino found his lips landing directly on Satoshi’s.

The angle was awkward and the kiss sloppy, but Nino didn’t care. He kept his lips pressed against Satoshi’s for a few moments and then pulled back flushing brightly as he asked; “Would you go on a date with me?”

“I…”

“Satoshi, have you seen these reports?” Sho came bursting into the office without knocking and Nino very nearly jumped out of his skin. He did jump up from the sofa holding the puppies awkwardly to his chest to stop them from rolling onto the floor. “Nino, I…Wasn’t expecting you to be in here…”

“Puppies…Needed feeding…” Nino mumbled glad that the bottles were empty now. He carefully rubbed their backs to get up any wind and placed them in the basket flashing a quick look at Satoshi before making his way hurriedly to the door. “Um…I should get back to work…I…Um…”

“Kazunari” Satoshi called just as he was reaching the door and Nino stopped dead in his tracks turning to look at his boss surprised at how much he seemed to have recovered from a few moments before. If he wasn’t holding to wriggling pups in his hands he would have looked completely professional which made it even more surreal when he said “Nothing would make me happier”

“Ah, right, um…That’s good. We can talk about it later…” Nino swallowed before bowing his head and fleeing from the office leaving a bewildered Sho and a bemused Satoshi in his wake. He ran for his and Masaki’s station and dropped down into his chair breathing hard through his nose. Masaki looked up curiously from the paperwork he was working on and Nino swallowed. He didn’t want to tell his friend what had happened and yet at the same time he did. Masaki’s simple way of looking at the world could only help soothe his confusion now. “I just asked Satoshi out…And…I sort of…Kind…Maybe…Kissed him a little bit…”

“What?! What? No-way! This is huge!” Masaki shrieked, or near shrieked while still managing to keep his voice pretty low. “What do you mean? Kind…Maybe…?”

“I was going to kiss him on the cheek but then he moved so I end up planting one right on his mouth…” Nino explained bringing his fingertips to his mouth and remembering the feel of Satoshi’s pressed up against his. Masaki let out a truly loud laugh, his eyes sparkling like diamonds with his happiness as he spluttered;

“Eh?! That kind of thing only happens in movies!”

“More romantic comedy than heavy drama…” Nino nodded knowing that Masaki wasn’t far off. Over the last month his life did seem to be following the plot line of a cheesy romance. “Urgh…I don’t know what to do!”

“You don’t want the date?”

“I do…”

“Then stop over thinking it and go and have fun! I watched you last night, Nino, you and he are surprisingly good for each other…You compliment each other really well! I think you’ll make a great couple!” Masaki beamed reaching out and giving his shoulder a squeeze. “Just go for it and stop thinking about it too much! But…You know…Most people try dating before babies…But you’ve always had to be different, ne, Nino-chan?”
