There were four that he could see straight away and all of them looked no older than a couple of weeks old. Their eyes were open which meant they were around three weeks at least but they were still clearly dependant on their mother, their mother who was laid a few feet away. For a moment Nino was scared afraid that she might attack him for being so close to her babies and then he saw that she was motionless. With her chest as thin as it was any signs of breathing or a heartbeat. Nino turned back to the puppies terrified that they were too late.
“Are they alive?”
“I don’t…I don’t…” Nino muttered his heart stopping when one of the puppies gave a squeak moving one paw. It jostled the other puppies and they in turn let out a little yip. “Yes, they are alive…Barely…But they are…” He cried moving in and picked up one of the puppies from the ground and held it too his chest. “They’re so very cold…”
“It’s okay. I have a carrier” Satoshi said from behind him and Nino heard the sound of rustling from behind him. “And a self-heating blanket how many are there?”
“Four I think” Nino answered gathering up the other three puppies and holding them against his chest. With the thick coat Satoshi had given him it was unlikely that he would be able to give them any warmth, but he hated the idea of having them on the cold floor so close to the mother’s body.
“Any sign of the mother?”
“She’s dead. I think she was attacked” Nino moved out of the bush and turned to Satoshi who had pulled a carrier out of his bag and set it up. There was a blue fluffy blanket inside which Nino saw was connected to a control panel. He placed the puppies inside and then covered them with the blanket. “I should see if there are any more…”
“I’ll do that, you’ve already scratched up your face, you should hold on to this” Satoshi handed him the basket and gently moved him aside. His hand came up to his face, his thumb brushing at what was obviously a cut on his cheek. Nino hissed a little at the contact, his eyes closing tightly. “We should make sure to treat that later…Okay, I’m going in”
“Be careful” Nino said almost playfully as he moved out of the way. He peered into the basket at the little bundle of puppies. They were so small, barely big enough to lift their heads, and they were so skinny he could see the ribs through the rolls of skin. Puppies weren’t meant to look like that, they were meant to be fat and warm. He didn’t see anyway that they might survive but if there was even half a chance that they could be brought around he was sure that he would do it. He turned back to the demon boss who was buried in the bushes searching frantically through the undergrowth. “Any more?”
“Not that I can see…The mother looks like she fought hard for her little ones” Satoshi answered pulling himself back out of the bushes and Nino shivered a little bit his teeth chattering against each other. “Come on, let’s get home and all of us warmed up”
“Sounds good. What will we do with the puppies? If we can’t get them into the vet?” Nino asked as they started to walk back towards the house. They were coming from the opposite direction from they had come, and Nino was glad that they would soon be home.
“I have some formula that will tide us over, but it shouldn’t be too long before the roads are cleared and then we will get them checked out as soon as possible” Satoshi assured him a hand resting on the small of his back. Even through the layers Nino was wearing it was warm and he moved further into it.
By the time they got back to the house the puppies seemed to have come alive. They were yipping and moving against each other. It wasn’t big movements, but it was an improvement on the way they had been only a few moments ago. “I think they’re hungry”
“Yeah, they are making a lot of noise now” Nino chuckled with a blossom of hope forming in his chest. Satoshi slid open the door and ushered Nino inside. Nino froze in the doorway as he saw that the cleaner was still there, half way through her morning routine. He wasn’t completely sure how she had managed to make it through the snow, but he did recognise the woman as the one who had tried to give him money before.
“Maruyama-san, good morning, I’m surprised that you made it through the snow” Satoshi hummed as he saw the woman. She barely battered an eyelid, but Nino could tell that she was eyeing him strangely and harshly.
“The roads weren’t that bad, sir, your guest would probably be able to leave soon” She muttered, and Nino swallowed shuffling his feet against the floor. Satoshi let out a growl which caused the woman to flinch and look away from them while the man’s arm came up around his shoulders.
“Kazunari isn’t my guest, he will be moving in this weekend or at least I hope so if the snow clears up a little more. Come on, the puppies need to be warmed and fed” Satoshi pushing him forward towards the radiator. Nino flushed under the look that was sent his way from the cleaner. He didn’t know what he had done to offend her, but he decided to ignore her until she went away. “You should warm them up while I make up the formula”
“Okay? What do I do?”
“Just take off your jacket and lay them on your chest with the blankets over it” Satoshi advised gently and, although he was nervous, Nino did as he was told. He quickly pulled off his coat and jumper before taking out all the puppies and laying them on his chest. They jostled around and yipped loudly their nails scratching at his skin just a little and he gave a giggle making sure they all stayed on his chest. He stroked them gently under the blanket watching as Satoshi made up the tiny bottles of milk.
