My Demon Boss and Other Annoyances part 37

 “I’m going to take off now, I have a meeting that I can’t miss this morning, but I’ve sent out a mass alert this morning. There is no point risking people getting injured in this snow” Sho hummed motioning to the window where the snow was staying settled. Nino had no real desire in going walking in it, but Satoshi seemed more determined than ever. His stomach was settled enough for now and he was able to manage a cooled cup of tea and a banana, at Satoshi’s insistence that he eat something, and now he was dressed in clothes borrowed from Satoshi along with a pair of well worn in hiking boots. “Have fun in the snow, but be careful…”

“I know this lake like the back of my hand” Satoshi appeared to be affronted that Sho didn’t trust him, but Nino knew that it was just common sense.

“Be that as it may, it takes one accident and its curtains” Sho sighed wrapping a familiar green scarf around his neck before completing the set with a lopsided bobble hat. Nino recognised it as being from the set Masaki had lovingly created when he had decided to take up knitting. He hadn’t been all that bad at it for the most part. He could make jumpers and cardigans fine, but hats had been a challenge he had never won, and they always leaned to one side. “Masaki insisted I wear them”

“They suit you sir” Nino smirked his eyes on the flush that had completely stained Sho’s cheeks realising that Satoshi had spoken the truth earlier his friend and second boss did act like they were married. It wasn’t something immediately noticeable, just things like knowing how Sho liked his tea, or what his favourite snack food was, and he was glad that Sho would be finally doing something about it for his friend’s sake. “Masaki made them himself…”

“Aiba-kun is very talented and it’s Sho when we’re out of work. You’re carrying my best friend’s child you should at least use my name, Ninomiya”

“Nino. Everyone just calls me Nino” Nino corrected with a smile and the older, taller man, nodded bidding them both goodbye before turning smartly on his heel and walking to the door.

“Are you ready to go?” Satoshi asked with a strange and happy eagerness as soon as the door was closed, and Nino sighed, his nose wrinkling with hatred as he dragged himself up out of the chair and stamping his feet on the ground.

“…As I’ll ever be…You do know that this won’t change my opinion, right? I hate the snow and everything it stands for” He grumbled allowing himself to be ushered out of a side door that led directly onto what should have been the path around the lake but was actuality a snow bank that easily came to Nino’s knees. Thanks to the warm protective clothes and boots Nino didn’t feel any of the chill that might have come with it, but it didn’t make him feel any better. “So, why are we risking losing toes when you have a wonderfully warm house?”

“The snow was so sudden that animals often get caught out. As sad as it seems people often dump puppies and kittens out here thinking that they will be fine as they are going back to nature. Sadly, not many make it less without help” Satoshi hummed hitching a back further up his back and Nino instantly felt warmth flooding over him towards his boss. It wasn’t something that he would have ever imagined the demon of Yama heights doing but it wasn’t something that he was going to turn away from.

“What do you do when you find them?”

“There is a sanctuary. Kiri, my sister always dreamed of setting one up. She would draw it all day and when she passed the money left her by our grandparents came to me.” Satoshi’s voice didn’t change a bit but Nino knew that he was sad about it from the way his shoulders slopped and he wouldn’t look at him. “I made the sanctuary in her honour. With the money they will never have to worry about donations and any animal there will never have the worry of being put to sleep”

“Your sister sounds as though she was as pure hearted as Masaki” He whispered knowing that was exactly the kind of thing that Masaki had wanted to do from when he was very small. He had even gone to business school hoping that he might get the job as PA to a vet. Of course, he would never change things now, but he would be amazed by what he was hearing. His mum would have hugged the man for his wonderful nature. “My mum would have loved it too. I was always bringing home stray dogs. We never kept them, but she would always make sure she found good homes for them”

“You never kept one?” Satoshi asked pausing in his walk to turn and look at him with an eyebrow lifted. Nino supposed that his voice had sounded funny. He had always wanted to keep the small creatures he had found and brought home.

“…We lived in a no pet apartment…The landlord would have thrown us out if he knew” Nino knew his mother hadn’t been lying on that score. Their landlord had been a hateful, spiteful old man who had dislike his mum from the moment they had moved in but the rent was in their price range and somehow they had gotten to make it feel like a home.

“The Matsumoto’s would have helped you out…”

“I’m not sure what kind of life you think we lived. Junichi and mum were close, but they didn’t live in each other’s pockets. She may have needed some help after my dad died but it was returned in full when she could” Nino snapped back completely irritated with the assumption of his mother. She’d been just as stubborn and prideful as he was, and he knew that she hated Junichi asking if she was doing okay for money. In fact, it was one of the few things they had fought about.

“Sorry, I suppose that sounded worse than I meant it to and I’m sorry for that”

“It’s okay…” Nino sighed deciding that the apology sounded genuine enough “So, how do we find any puppies and kittens that might have been left out here?”

“It would be further away from the house. We have to listen and check in the bushes where they might have gone to try and stay warm…”

“Okay, I can do that”

Hmmm Nino is really sensitive on any topic that has something to do with his mom. I'm glad Ohno clarrified right away what he meant.
Hopefully Ohmiya would enjoy their rescue mission. It would be nice if they'll find a pup or kitten they could adopt. That could help in building their bond~ 💛💙
