“And then Yusuke came down wearing a bright pink school shirt! He wasn’t very happy he chased me all over the house and kicked me in the bum!” Masaki giggled as he served up another plate of pancakes pushing in his direction. Sho smiled his thanks and sat next to his nephew who appeared to be half way through a large stack of pancakes. It was rare that the boy would eat so much but Sho supposed that there was a difference from store brought bentos and homecooked meals. “In the end my mum made me wear the pink shirt and gave mine to Yusuke”
“You did put in the red sock” Kazu chuckled through his food and Masaki gave an indignant stare his hands on his hips.
“It was an experiment! I have a great scientific brain Kazu-kun! But my brother never understood that!” He muttered and Sho snorted into his breakfast. When Masaki had first started talking of his brother Sho had imagined them to be as distant as he was with his sister but after seeing them together Sho could say for certain that Yusuke idolised his brother in much the same way he did. Masaki was a force of nature all on his own and was free in ways that most people couldn’t be. Children and animals loved him because they could see the light coming off him in waves and wanted to be, even for a moment, surrounded by that light. “He never forgave me for blowing up our room with the firecracker either, just because it was on his side of the room…”
“A firecracker? But they’re not big enough…” Kazu laughed again and Masaki gave a sheepish smile and a little shrug brushing the back of his neck with his fingertips.
“Ah…Um…I may have modified it a little…Um…But it would have been okay! But the sun was a little bright and there was a magnifying glass…But yup…It made a big bang! My dad shouted a lot that day” Sho watched the smile on his lover’s face become a little warmer as he spoke about his father. The man had been Masaki’s childhood hero in ways that people would never understand. He had started out with nothing but a dream and had worked to make it reality and his love had only grown stronger when he had come out to his parents. Masaki had told him how the man had been sitting with a glass of beer, the same kind Masaki enjoyed now, and had let out a sigh before saying ‘I’ve known before you did, now pass the salt’ It hadn’t been anything more than that, but the acceptance had been astounding. “He never really shouted at me before then, but it was ‘cause he was worried I managed to burn my arm…See I still have a scar on my wrist…He shouted at me smacked my bum and then hugged me. I never played with firecrackers after that but yeah Yusuke made me do all the cleaning myself”
“I’m not surprised, since you blew it up” Sho chuckled rolling his eyes and sticking out his tongue at his lover who copied the action with a chuckle.
“You and your brother had a lot of fun”
“I doubt Yusuke would think it was fun. He always said I was brainless” Masaki chuckled again “But yup it was fun. We made our own slide once. There was a hill near our house, so we took all the empty cardboard boxes from the restaurant and laid them all out. It worked really well! Um well until it rained and turned to mush but we also made a tree house. I think that’s still there we can go find it later if you like”
“Sounds…Nice” Kazu whispered his laughter fading as his cheeks grew both warm and pale at the same time.
“Yup! Have you ever built a tree house? Sho-chan hasn’t because he starts screaming standing on a chair it’s too high!”
“I’m so happy my fear of heights makes you so happy”
“It does, it’s cute! It lets people know that you’re human!” Masaki giggled coming around the table and casually pressing a kiss to his forehead. It was a natural reaction, one that Masaki had given him hundreds of times since he had moved in, but it was something that caused Kazu to suck in a long breath and stiffen. “But I think that Kazu-kun is cuter than you are, Sho-chan” Masaki announced moving to the boy and pressing a light kiss to his forehead as well. “Okay! I’m gonna go shower, you two finish up and wash the dishes okay? Please try and not break any this time Sho-chan”
“It happened twice”
“Twice too many Sho-chan, make sure he behaves Kazu-kun” Masaki called over his shoulder before disappearing into the bath room with his arms filled with clothes. Kazu was still against him and slowly Sho turned to look at him. His nephew’s knuckles were white from where he was holding onto the fork.
“Kazu-kun? Are you okay? I...”
“Masaki-san is an affectionate person” Kazu muttered slowly and unsure what to say Sho nodded. He had expected the boy to want to know about the kiss, but he supposed that he hadn’t realised yet that most men didn’t kiss their male friends like that even if they were living together. He knew that Masaki was right about telling his nephew the truth about them, but he was hoping that Masaki would be with him when he did as he would know what to say.
“He is”
“Is he just being nice to me because I’m your nephew?”
“No, I think Masaki really likes Kazu-kun and wants you to be happy here with us. I want that too, Kazu…I know I’m not as…Open as Masaki but…I really do like having you here with me and I hope you like being here” Sho said gently trying his best not to trip over his own words. He wasn’t like Masaki. His family hadn’t taught him how to be open and honest, but he really wanted his nephew to know that he did care about him though it must have seemed like he was always waiting for him to leave when his mother came back. Sho was disgusted with his sister and with himself for not realising how bad things were for Kazu. “Come on let’s finish and do these dishes before Masaki gets back alright?”
“Yeah…”
