“No…Why?”
“Somebody like him would be popular with girls, ne?” Kazu asked with a small smile remembering the way Masaki had burst into the hospital ward. The children had been laying in their beds looking ill until Masaki had entered and then, as if by magic, their tired, pale faces had come alive and looked as though they were normal kids at a park. “I bet he can’t wait to have kids of his own!”
“He’s never said anything about wanting children of his own. He has more than enough at the hospital” Sho hummed and somehow that made Kazu sad for all of the children that Masaki wouldn’t have. He seemed to be the type of person that would thrive on having children of his own and he could see him doing all the things he had never done with his own father and mother. “Masaki…He…We…We’re not like…I mean…We’re still young yet!”
“I guess, but you shouldn’t leave it too long” Kazu agreed though they both seemed old to him. It was something that his mother and his grandmother, on the rare occasions that he got to see her, agreed on. “Grandma and Mum always asks why you haven’t gotten married yet”
“They do? At least they have something civil to talk about” Sho half grumbled and Kazu smiled finding himself reaching out and taking his uncle’s hand. It wasn’t something that he had ever done before today but it had been nice when Masaki had taken his hand and moved him away from the road side of the path. It had grumbled about not being a baby and not needed anyone to hold his hand but in his heart, it had been nice to know that somebody had worried about his health. Sho looked down at his hand in his and for a moment Kazu wondered if he should pull away but uncle squeezed at him a little tightly and then urged him on to the platform. “I will get married when I can but not before” Sho mumbled confusingly “But until then I will live happily with Masaki and you”
“Mum will come back” Kazu muttered after his heart jumped in his chest at the inclusion of him into his uncle’s life. He knew that it was wicked but there were times that he wished that his mother never came back to fetch him and that he was told that he would have to stay with his uncle.
“Maybe, but when she does she’ll have to be prepared” Sho hummed his tone steely hard and Kazu looked up at him with his head cocked gently to one side as he asked curiously;
“Prepared for what?”
“For Masaki, he’s like a big playful puppy most of the time but when he gets angry he’s just like his mother” Sho chuckled handing him over the bag so he could take out his wallet with one hand and pay for their tickets. Sho’s statement didn’t clear the question for Kazu however and he asked quietly;
“What does that mean?”
“You’ll see for yourself tomorrow but mostly he’s like a wolf when it comes to protecting his family. Come on the train is already here, if we miss this one we’ll have to get on the rush hour one” Sho urged him into a run pulling out the tickets from the machine.
Kazu could never claim that he enjoyed sports or physical activity of any kind but there was something almost fun about dashing through the small station at his uncle’s side and by the time they had managed to get on they were both puffing and panting with their bodies bent double. They looked at each other and giggled loudly before moving to find their seats. Sho let him take the window seat the same way Masaki had done and he watched the world roll by not realising he was still holding his uncle’s hand until a woman, older than his grandmother with wiry grey hair and heavy-set wrinkles around her eyes and mouth, said;
“You have a cute son!”
“Thank-you” Sho hummed squeezing his hand to keep him quiet when he was about to say that he wasn’t his son but his nephew. “He’s very cute, ne?”
“I only had girls, always wanted a son” The old lady said with an almost dream like quality to her voice and Kazu knew that she seemed to be remembering something from long ago and he wondered how old her daughters were. They must be old themselves by now. His mother had never liked talking to people on the train and his uncle had been the same until today, offering them little nods and smiles of politeness but never encouraging conversation. Masaki had been different, he had spoken to everybody and they had back. When he had asked why Masaki had shrugged and hummed softly so only he could hear ‘mostly only sick people and visitors use this train, most are scared, ne? What harm is there in listening to their stories for ten minutes?’ Again, it was something strange to him but he had liked it and he glad that his uncle had started the conversation too “Going to grow up to look like his father”
“He’s already better than I ever was at his age” Sho told her and Kazu found himself blushing brightly and looking back outside as his heart filled with warmth. He drowned out the rest of the conversation and lost himself in his own thoughts. Eventually the train pulled into their station and Sho bid the old lady goodbye and Kazu followed suit. “Masaki always talks to people on the train he says it’s because they are going to and from the hospital but really it’s because he doesn’t know how not to be nice to people” Sho chuckled softly “I guess he rubbed off on me a little…”
“That’s nice though…Masaki is nice”
“He is, come on let’s go play video games think you can beat me?”
