 “I think that we should break up”

Matsumoto Jun stared opened mouthed at his boyfriend. To his and everyone’s surprise they had been dating for almost seven months and he had been sure that everything had been fine. Yes, they were only young and nobody really expected a high school romance to last forever but he hadn’t even had the hint that Nino was unhappy with their relationship. For all that they were completely different, with Nino being the captain of the baseball time and him being the weird kid who liked to take photos but they had somehow been perfect together. Last night, his birthday, had been the first time that they had had sex and Nino had held him so tightly afterwards that he was sure that they were both in love.

“Why?”

“…My dad’s got a job in Tokyo and I will be going with him” Nino announced and Jun blinked slowly positive that his heart was breaking and it was only getting worse with the casual and almost blunt way Nino was speaking.

“What? When?”

“This coming weekend” Nino answered and Jun felt a slow tear rolling down his cheek. Today was Thursday so that meant that Nino would be moving in only two days. Nino had the decency to look a little crestfallen his eyes almost closing as his pale lips twitched. “I wanted to tell you but…It was your birthday”

“So, you waited until after my birthday…Why can’t we write? Tokyo isn’t that faraway, I can get the train and you…”

“Jun, I don’t think I could handle a long-distance relationship. I’m sorry but it won’t work. We’re only young, you should be playing the field a bit, ne?” Nino smiled again the earlier sadness leaving his face as he got to his feet. Jun wanted to grab him and hold him and demand answers but instead he sat on his legs staring as Nino walked away noticing that never once did he look back.

Ten Years Later

Matsumoto Jun groaned audibly running his fingers through the hair of his fringe before pouring himself a drink of scotch. The memory, as always, was like a physical punch to his stomach. It had been ten years since Nino had broken up with him and he had dated many more people since but his heart always went back to Nino. It was stupid and it made him angry but he had known even then that his love for Nino was the once in a life time kind of love and nobody could compare to Nino in his mind even if he had probably put him on the pedestal even with the cruel way he had broken up with him.

Draining the drink Jun dumped the glass in the large bowl before looking around the empty and clean bar. He had inherited it from his father when the man had passed away four years ago and he had reluctantly kept it open. There weren’t many other options in his home town and yet he couldn’t bring himself to move. For some reason, it was as though his life had stopped in a rut since Nino had walked out of his life. The bar had gotten busy lately though and he was glad that today it was empty and he could close and head home. It was the work of a moment to shut the blinds and switch off the light and soon he was standing in the cool air cursing as his key slipped in the hole.

“You didn’t really live here!” A voice, high pitched and almost muffled voice gasped and Jun shook his head slowly while rolling his eyes. Tourists had become a fairly common thing in the town lately, since it had been used as the hometown of Japan’s top idol in his latest drama but they were normally female. He turned just a little to look at the speaker and his heart almost dropped down to his knees.  The speaker was a tall and good-looking man with a mop of fine bleached hair and eyes that appeared to be wrinkled from smiling while the person he was speaking to was short with dark eyes and long hair which had been tied into a small pony tail at the back of his neck. His mouth was caught in an all too familiar smile which changed into a large O of surprise his eyes losing some of their shine. “You know him?”

“I…Um…Jun, it’s been a long time” Nino said softly his head dipping just a little and it was all that was needed for Jun to straighten his back and swallow down a lump from his throat and lock the ancient door. Silently he stalked passed Nino and the other man and marched off down the road positive that he heard a small whisper of “I’m sorry”

“Kazu, you okay, sweetheart?” The loud man asked and Jun turned in time to see an arm wrapping around the thin shoulders of his former boyfriend. Nino gave a smile and nodded though Jun was almost pleased to see that he was looking at him though it was clear that Nino hadn’t had the problem of moving on that he had done. “Come on, let’s get back to the hotel…”

“Yeah…Okay” Nino agreed as Jun turned the corner which led him almost immediately to his own home. It was the same home he’d lived in with his parents so it shouldn’t have been that surprising for Nino to see him around here unless he had thought he’d moved. He had always said that he wanted to go to Tokyo and have somebody look at his pictures. He had been full of grand plans and ideas but none of them had ever come to pass mostly because he was stuck in a rut. Sighing he unlocked the door and stepped inside the scent of damp almost overwhelming for the first time in a long time.

Ninomiya Kazunari, captain of the baseball time was the most popular boy in school. He had brought some pride back in the team after almost single-handedly winning the first game he was in. He was small, cute, but mighty and he had become something of a celebrity in their small town. Jun hadn’t thought much of it until he had been asked by the school paper to take some photos for a piece that they were writing about him. He had thought the other boy was arrogant and distant but five minutes into taking the photos he had discovered that instead of arrogant Nino was shy and the only reason he didn’t talk to people was because he found it awkward to start conversations.

Within a week he had developed a crush that was so bad he had been barely able to move until eventually he was completely in love. Nino had been the first to confess, one night after they had been watching a movie at the cinema and Jun had immediately said the same. It had been amazing to be Nino’s boyfriend and he had watched every game with pride filling the film of his camera with shots of Nino. Nino had made every single one of his days brighter.

Making love to Nino on his birthday had been like something out of a dream. Nino had caressed and kissed every single inch of his body and he had done the same. When he had finally entered him with a snap of his hips he had wanted to cry and Nino had done so. He had watched the tears slip down his cheek and he wiped them away with his thumb. It had been perfect and then the very day after Nino had ripped out his heart and jumped on it.

After that day, he hadn’t even seen Nino again but he had heard his name mentioned with people saying that he had been given a scholarship and other similar things. Jun had been teased and laughed at afterwards with most saying Nino had left to get away from him. He had always planned what he would say if he saw Nino again but the truth was he had been too shocked and hurt to do anything more than run away.

Letting out a shaky breath he leaned against the wall of his home and let out a loud swear his fists clenching so tightly it hurt.

“Bastard” He swore the sound falling flat around his ears before he dropped down to the floor and glared at the shoes lined up in a row. He stayed there for almost half an hour before his legs grew stiff and his arms started to ache from holding the same position. He told himself that it didn’t matter, that Nino wouldn’t be staying in the town long but had probably wanted to show his new lover his old home. He would probably be here only a weekend at most and it was likely he would never have to see them again. “That would be best…” He told himself hoping that he would be proven correct.

*****

The next day he almost made it to closing before he heard the breathy voice walking into his bar. At first, he thought that he was talking to Nino, his voice was as bright as he been yesterday and he was laughing loudly as he said something like;

“You know I love you right?” Jun couldn’t hear the response but it was enough to twist a knife into his chest so when he turned and saw that the man was speaking on the phone and not to Nino he felt a muscle pulse in his cheek wondering if Nino was being cheated on. He wiped the glass a little more vigorously than he would have done before and waited for him to approach the counter. “Can I have a beer please?” The man smiled brightly before rolling his eyes “I’m having a beer but I’m not getting drunk, I told you I would be as good as a saint…Nino? He’s already, got a face like a wet weekend but otherwise okay, we’ve been having mad passionate sex since we arrived though…Hey!” The man flinched as Jun slammed the glass of beer down in front of him and Jun couldn’t bring himself to care “Nothing some guy splashed drink all over me!”

“Sorry, can I offer you a paper towel?” Jun asked through gritted teeth holding out some blew wipes and the man took some and wiped his hands and arm before tossing the crumpled sheets down onto the counter.

“Nothing, some guy Nino’s knows. No, I don’t know who it is, but you know what Nino’s like mouth like a clam when it’s something emotional” The man sighed sipping at his beer and Jun tried his level best to ignore the conversation until he heard the man sigh yet again and say “I don’t when I’ll be able to see you again, though at this rate I’m just going to leave Nino here…No! But you don’t understand…Ever since yesterday he’s been…As silent as the grave…I want to feel you again…”

“Excuse me, but if you’re going to have such a private conversation you should perhaps learn to keep your voice down?” Jun suggested his teeth once again clenched as the man turned his large eyes to look at him. There was a calculating expression in his eyes and his lips were twitching into a smile as he gave a nod.

“Sorry Sho-bear but I should go, talk to you later…” The happy looking man said before purring “Yup, I love you too…Bye-bye. Your beer is nice”

“Excuse me?”

“Your beer? It tastes really good, Nino said that it was brewed here…” The stranger said happily a foam moustache clinging to his top lip. “Ah sorry, I haven’t introduced myself, have I? Aiba Masaki, I’m a friend of Nino’s. You know Nino, right? He said that it was a long time since he’d seen you”

“We went to school together” Jun said stiffly not wanting to talk but the bar wasn’t teeming with people and it would be extremely rude to just leave him while he was talking.

“Hmm, I’ve known him for ten years but I’ve never heard him talk about you. But I never heard him talk about this town until this month. It’s pretty ne? I would have liked to have grown up here! Hey! What was Nino like, at school?”

“Shouldn’t you just be asking him about this?” Jun muttered wondering why it hurt so much that Nino hadn’t told his new lover about him and that Masaki appeared to have known him for almost as long as he had been separated from him.

“I would but Nino never talks about his past, so was he the weird nerdy kid?” Masaki asked with a laugh and Jun immediately shook his head saying honestly;

“He was the most popular guy in school, everyone loved him…”

“Really? That surprises me, I mean, he never had visitors so I figured…”

“Visitors?” Jun’s eyebrows drew together and his lips pursed into a frown wondering what Masaki was going on about. It almost sounded as though Nino was in prison or hospital or something.

“Yeah, in the hospital…You didn’t know? He was in at the same time as me! He had Leukaemia…How could you not know?” It was Masaki’s turn too look shocked and surprised and Jun felt blood rushing through his ears as his heart seemed to have stopped completely. He didn’t want to believe it but now he thought about it Nino had been spending a lot of time at the doctors. He had told him that he had strained a muscle during practice. “It was a miracle he survived. Eh?! How could nobody know! I always thought that he didn’t have any friends!”

“He…He had…He…He had leukaemia? How…How…He…Where…Where is he?” Jun spluttered knowing that he wasn’t making a whole lot of sense but right now, more than anything he wanted to see Nino and have him confirm what was being said. He told himself that it didn’t change anything but in some small way it did at the very least he hoped it did. Masaki looked surprised but he muttered slowly;

“The hotel on the sea front…? Um…He said that he was staying in tonight…Um…”

“I need to speak to him…Do you mind looking after the bar?”

“I…I’ve never done it before…” Masaki squeaked but Jun shrugged barely listening to him “But I will do my best!”

“Thank-you” Jun muttered before grabbing his coat and leaving the bar. He felt almost as though he was in a daze as he walked the overly familiar streets but eventually he found himself in front of the hotel. It was one of only two hotels in the town but it was by far the nicest. He was about to go in when he heard Nino’s laugh. It wasn’t quite as bright as it had been in the old days but it was still full of mirth and Jun found his head whipping around to see his former boyfriend on the beach. His jeans had been pulled up to the knee and he was only wearing a t-shirt while playing around with a dog. He was thinner than he had been before but otherwise there was no signs that he had battled a devastating illness.

Nino had always been proud of his hair, often saying that it was his best feature and he tried hard to picture him bald and failed. He moved forward slowly his legs dragging on the old flag stones that made up the path by the sea. The dog jumped around him and Nino laughed again before kneeling and wrapping his arms around its neck looking out over the ocean.

“This was always your favourite place” He said as he came up behind him and Nino turned slowly his mouth wide with surprise and his eyes bulged out. Jun gave him a tense little smile and then sighed as the dog barked loudly and ran off in the direction of his owner. “You…Had cancer”

“Masaki opened his big mouth?”

“Why didn’t you? Ten years, you just left me. You left me and you never told me why. Why? Why didn’t you tell me?” Jun asked wanting to understand what logic had for that but nothing came to him and he bit hard on his lower lip. Nino stayed in the crouched position for a while longer just continuing to stare at the ocean until he said;

“Because you would have come visit me. I didn’t want you to see me like that”

“Why? I could have been there, I could have supported you”

“I was given six months if I was lucky do you really think I wanted hospital visits to be the last thing you remembered of me? I wanted it to be that night…That night that you and me…” Nino’s cheeks coloured brightly and he hugged his head “I wasn’t going to break up with you, I was just going to leave after that night…But in the end, I couldn’t and didn’t want to”

“You should have told me, I would have understood more than you just feeding me that line about not wanting to have a long-distance relationship” Jun growled all the hurt he had felt then coming back to him now and Nino nodded closing his eyes as he let out a long drawn out sigh.

“I thought it was best”

“You were wrong” Jun muttered and to his surprise Nino nodded in agreement whispering;

“I know. I’m sorry, Jun, I’m really sorry, I know that doesn’t mean anything...”

“Are you dating that Masaki guy?”

“What? No way! He’s dating Sho…”

“Sho-bear?” Jun grimaced a little and Nino let out a laugh which sounded suspiciously wet.

“Yeah, they are a creepily loving couple though Masaki likes to pretend he will cheat with me” Nino rolled his eyes slowly and then smiled as he gave a fake shudder. Jun found himself smiling along though it didn’t last as he looked at the face of his lover. Nino had barely changed in the years that had separated them but there was something in his eyes that was a little distant and fearful. It was as though he had grown up too fast and seen too much. Jun wanted to ask him about his time in the hospital but he could easily imagine friends that hadn’t been so lucky and he knew Nino didn’t need to be reminded of that. “There has never been anyone…I mean…It’s hard when you found the love of your life at 16”

“I dated other people” Jun said knowing that just yesterday he would have had a strange sense of satisfaction at the hurt that flashed in Nino’s eyes but he knew that it was meaningless now. “They never lasted though…”

“I’m sorry, Jay”

“You really broke my heart, Nino” Jun breathed as Nino finally stood up so they were almost level. The smaller guy nodded slowly worrying at his bottom lip before whispering;

“I know, it was unforgivable. If I could change it I would, you were all I thought about. In the hospital, every day I wished that you had figured it out and that you would turn up…”

“Why didn’t you come back when you survived? It’s been ten years”

“I made a promise to myself, if I survived. I would become a cancer nurse. I only just passed this year” Nino answered and Jun felt like cursing. For ten years he had been angry at Nino for leaving him and had had many long well thought out arguments in his mind for if he saw Nino again but now it was happening it was as though his right to be angry had been stripped away from him. Nino had survived cancer and had gone on to want to help others while he had just stayed in the same place.

“Congratulations”

“Thanks”

“Why come here to celebrate?”

“…I’m not, I…That is…Um the hospital…They have no…Staff specialising in cancer…” Nino’s voice trailed off fairly quickly as Jun balked at the information. He hadn’t expected Nino to be coming home and he wasn’t completely sure how he felt about it now he knew.

“You’re staying?”

“I guess that depends…” Nino answered with a heavy sigh kicking at a clump of sand that was close to is foot.

“On what?”

“If you can forgive me”

“You broke my heart, I was prepared to hate you for the rest of my life…”

“I’m sorry”

“But. It’s been two days since my birthday” Jun sighed slowly knowing that he couldn’t do anything but forgive Nino now. It was harsh and unfair but he was glad that he was alive for him to be angry at. “You broke my heart…You have to fix it…”

“…I…I can…I can do that…”

“Don’t lie to me again, Nino” Jun whispered and Nino nodded taking half a step towards him before pausing when their hands were almost touching.

“Never again…”

“…Welcome home…”

“Happy…Happy birthday Jun…”
