A harsh high-pitched wail tore through the hospital room and Matsumoto Jun froze his hand squeezing almost too tightly at the hand in his and he only realised when his husband moaned at him to let go.
“Anyone would think that you had a whole new human clawing at your insides” His husband, Matsumoto Ninomiya Kazunari breathed his voice high and almost dreamy from all the drugs he’s had pumped into his system to help aid the baby in its path out of them. Jun looked at the man and then back at the nurse who had just moved from around the green cloth that had been placed over Nino’s stomach at the start of the procedure. Something blue and bloody was in the other man’s arms and Jun felt his heart pump slowly just once inside his chest. All of the air had been forced from his lungs and he hissed long and hard gazing at the tiny figure.
“You have a fine, healthy baby girl” The nurse smiled placing the baby…His baby down onto Nino’s chest. Nino smiled his eyes soft through the drugs and his mouth slack as he touched their daughter’s tiny fragile back saying;
“You’re late, baby, you were meant to be here on your daddy’s birthday”
Jun felt a tear running down his face as suddenly his legs gave out and he fell to the hospital floor sharply. He couldn’t explain the feeling that was moving through him now. It was mostly disbelief but shock and panic weren’t too far away. On his birthday, five years Nino had told him quite happily that he was going to give him the thing he wanted most. A child. Jun had laughed and agreed thinking that they would adopt but the very next day Nino had signed up for the male pregnancy experiment.
It had been harder and longer than they could have believed but eventually the doctors had managed to establish a viable womb and had implanted a genetically modified egg with his sperm into Nino. The child was biologically theirs and together they had watched his stomach grow under the curious and delighted eyes of the medical staff. Sadly, the baby had passed away before it was even born. Nino had been devastated while for Jun it hadn’t been real yet. It had taken Nino a full year before going back and trying again.
This time everything had gone smoothly and they had had the pleasure of seeing their baby fully develop and grow. Nino had been extremely delighted when the due date had been that of Jun’s own birthday but unfortunately, as Nino had said, their little girl had decided she wanted her own birthday. “Jun? Are you okay?”
“Yeah…I just…I just need a minute” Jun whispered blinking through his tears as he gazed at the wrinkled face of his daughter and at the man holding her. “Everything we’ve been through…I never…I never imagined that…I didn’t believe it was really going to happen…That we’d really see her”
“I know, but here she is…All perfect and looking like her dad” Nino grinned and Jun scrunched his nose up to imitate the baby who was gazing out at him through strangely light brown eyes. “She’s beautiful, right?”
“She’s perfect…Just like you” Jun agreed a snuffling sound starting as a hand, tiny but chunky like her papa’s moved over Nino’s shoulder. “Welcome to the world little one, I promise it’s going to be amazing”
“Happy belated Birthday Daddy” Nino grinned carefully holding out the baby to him and Jun took her cradling her into his chest. She was so light it was unbelievable and like he had promised Nino on their wedding day he swore that he would protect his little girl with all his heart.
“Best present ever. Thank-you, Kazu”
