 Questions flowed freely for the first time and Sho did his best to answer all that he could. The day dwindled away with neither of them doing anything but talk and yet by the time they were finished Satoshi felt lighter than he had ever done before. He learnt about the gods the elves followed, about the halla, all the things that Elves seemed to find so ordinary were no longer mysteries to him.

“And could I have the tattoos?” Satoshi found himself asking expecting to be told that no shemlen would ever be able to wear the tattoos of the people but instead Sho looked almost happy though he shook his head.

“Perhaps, in the future maybe, at present I believe that you are not strong enough to endure it. The process is painful and yet it must be undertaken in complete silence” Sho informed him and Satoshi gave a nod before licking at his lips and asking;

“Is it done through blood magic?”

“No, at least not in the way that you as a mage of the circle would view blood magic” Sho answered with another long roll of his shoulders looking to the fire and waving his hands to make the flames grow larger and more warming. It was the casual use of magic that Satoshi almost envied now. He wanted not to be afraid of his own magic in the way the keeper was. “It is done via blood writing and as such can be deemed to be blood magic but it is harmless. I can say no more until you go through the trial, if you decide to go through it. Is there anything else that you want to know?”

“Are there any books that I could read?” He asked his cheeks growing a little warm but he had always loved to read. When one was locked away in a tower it was one of the few things that you could enjoy without complaint. He had also liked to fish in the lake beside the tower but that was only enjoyable if you had a nice Templar guarding you and after the blight and the almost fall of the circle he had had great difficulty in finding a nice templar that would sit quietly while he fished.

“Most of our books are in the elven writing but I have a few that I might give you and I could translate the rest”

“Also, um…May I be allowed to fish? I know that your hunters do so but I would like to help out however I can and I have always been quite good at fishing…” Satoshi coloured even further and then twiddled his thumbs Sho let out a laugh and then knocked his leg with his foot before agreeing with a clearing of his throat.

“Very well, you may help in that department if you wish, most have already agreed that for a Shemlen you’re actually very agreeable and they are more than happy to have you with us. It is something that doesn’t happen very often”

“I am grateful for your trust, and the trust of the clan, I will help you in any way that I can” Satoshi announced firmly remembering well how the clan had glared at him in the first weeks and even months of his arrival. He had expected it but it had hurt when parents would move their children away from him some even going so far as to threaten him. Kazunari and Sho had been the only two that had treated him nicely and he had often found himself feeling even more isolated than he had in the circle. Eventually though the clan had thawed and accepted his presence and sometimes his help when they were moving camps.

The first time that somebody had spoken to him without being forced he had found himself nearly sobbing with relief and then again, every time it had happened until at last it had been normal. Nobody glared at him anymore, nobody had a bad word to say and he hoped that he could repay them for taking him in.

“I know that and you may start fishing as soon as you would like, though we shall be moving soon and the area that we will go has better spots for you to catch fish.” Satoshi gave a nod and then ran his fingers through his hair his aching body informing him of how long they had been sitting in the same position. Slowly he stretched out his back and Sho did the same as he said; “For now, we will continue your training”

“But we haven’t done any training”

“Your mind is clearer now, yes?” Satoshi nodded knowing that that was the truth. His mind was completely clear now though his heart was full as he thought about Kazunari and all the things that he might have suffered at the hands of the Tervinter mages. “Tomorrow I will teach you to mediate and feel your magic, for the rest of the day I want you to try and think about your happiest memory, one where you felt completely at ease. You don’t need to tell me about it, just think about it, okay? And try to eat something when dinner comes around. Nino will be fine, he is made of stronger stuff than you realise and as for the hole in the fade I trust that it will turn out well”
