Vampire High part 23

 Masaki looked up as a shadow fell over the table and his heart jumped to the back of his throat as he saw Sho looking down at him. The ruby red eyes, which he thought he should find eerie but didn’t, were twinkling slightly in the lights and there was the same extremely handsome smile on his face that there had been when he had been in the hospital. Masaki hadn’t noticed it when he had been sat at the teachers’ table and he was happy that it appeared to be directed at him. His arm brushed against his shoulder as he leaned in a little closer and Masaki found himself unnerved by the fact that his heart started to race at the smallest touch.

“Did you enjoy your meal?”

“Yes! Thank-you, sensei!” Masaki was sure that he almost broke his neck when he jerked his head rapidly in a nod his cheeks burning a bright red as Nino gave him a strange look from across the table. He was glad that his father and Nino’s had decided to go for a walk around the island. Toma and Yamashita, who had insisted that they call him YamaP during dinner, had moved over to another table to talk to another pair of Vampires and he was deeply glad that they couldn’t see how awkward he was behaving.

“You don’t have to sound so grateful, Masaki-kun, I didn’t make it myself. If I had you wouldn’t have enjoyed it quite so much…” The vampire chuckled sliding into the seat that Toma had left not so long ago. “I have to apologise to you”

“Eh? What for?” Masaki’s face scrunched slowly his tongue poking out of his plump lips as he tried to work out what the vampire had to apologise for and he wasn’t sure that he liked the way Nino’s smile had vanished and he was once again glaring suspiciously out at them from under the locks of his hair. Sho leaned in a little closer and Masaki found himself blinking at the scent that suddenly came up from the vampires’ skin. It was warm and smoky, like all he bonfires that his father had lit when they had cleared the fallen leaves from the garden. They would always roast potatoes in the bottom of the fire bucket and then eat them as they looked up at the stars. His father had never known the names of the constellations but he had taught himself using books from the library and Masaki smiled leaning in just a little bit closer could he could take another breath of the scent.  

“For not replying to your letter”

“Ah…It’s okay sensei! I understand” He breathed blinking stupidly slowly to clear his mind of the fog that seemed to have come over him along with the scent. It wasn’t in anyway unpleasant but he had to remember that this was his teacher and that Nino was looking at them closely as though he was half a sentence from flinging himself over the table and attacking the teacher.

“I don’t think that you do. I was very happy to receive it, though I told you that you didn’t need to thank me, and I meant to reply to you many times but I got so busy that time slipped away from me and before I knew it, it would be quicker for me to talk to you here in the school than it would be to send you a reply” The teacher hummed softly not caring that Nino had clenched his fist over on his side of the table. It was really rather sweet that Nino cared for him so much but he was sure that there was no need. Masaki stretched out his leg and kicked sharply surprised and embarrassed that, instead of Nino like he’d planned, Sho hissed and pulled back.

“Ah! Sorry sensei! I didn’t…Eh…I’m sorry!” He cried causing the stragglers in the hall to turn and look at them. Toma and YamaP stood up and came over followed by the two vampires that Nino seemed to have befriended. Sho looked puzzled but chuckled reaching down and rubbing his leg.

“It’s okay, involuntary muscle spasm?”

“Um…Something…Something like that, sensei…I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you” He babbled and Sho shushed him by lightly tapping his arm with his other arm saying gently;

“It would take more than a small kick to hurt me, but it was surprising, if you wanted to get rid of me, you just had to say”

“No! Not at all sensei!” He squeaked as Jun and Satoshi reached the table both more focused on Nino than what was happening at his side of the table and he was surprised to see that Nino had stopped glaring and was looking at them with a something that was almost a smile on his face “I mean…I was trying…Um…It’s just…Umm…”

“I have to go now, some work that I still have to complete, but tomorrow, come to my office and we can have a chat?”

“I…Um…Okay!”
