His sense of smell could rival his sight and he was sure that he would still be able to continue teaching when he completely lost his sight but Nino still didn’t believe him. Nino stumbled a little now his leg hitting against a table of gifts his face clouding instantly and Jun moved forward coming to hold his hand.
“Are you ready to finally marry me?” He asked slowly lifting his hand to his cheek and Nino gave a breath stealing smile his fingers caressing him gently before he nodded his eyes closing tightly while Jun kissed his palm. His eyes moved to Masaki who was standing waiting to officiate over the wedding that he had been instrumental in bringing about and Jun would never be able to thank him enough for all the encouragement and nudges that he had given to get them to this point…
“What about you?” Jun asked slowly trying his best not to swallow down a lump at the idea that somebody so young could have almost lost their life. It happened but it was always something that happened to somebody else. Nino looked at him in a daze, his eyes slightly unfocused as though he wasn’t completely looking at him but lost in his memory maybe before he gave a tense sort of smile blinking rapidly and shrugging.
“What do you mean?”
“What about you? How did you feel?” Jun probed still not sure how this was meant to help with the flowers. He was well aware that everyone else, barring Sho, had already started arranging flowers into vases but Nino didn’t look concerned and he could remember all the questions that Nino had asked both him and Sho before arranging their flowers.
“I was happy, up until that point…I…Everything had felt pointless, I had been in the worst pain that I could imagine and had been given the worst news” Jun’s eyebrows knitted together slowly at that, he had thought they were talking about when Nino had recovered and yet it seemed, to him at least, that there was still something else hanging on the edge that was worse than the illness “I think that a part of me had just wanted to stop, to say what was the point? But then…Then my grand-father gave me something else to focus on”
“What colour flowers where there? In the ones that your grandfather had brought?” Jun asked an idea finally coming to his mind. He still wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to pull it off but he was going to try.
“All kinds of colours, but I remember the purples the most” Nino answered with that faraway look coming back to his eyes as his head cocked to one side and Jun was glad that his hunch had been right. “They were just so pretty against the dull grey and white of the room and when the sun shone through them and revealed all the little veins inside. Have you ever seen that?”
“No, I can’t say I have, I’ve never studied flowers that closely” Jun felt almost guilty for admitting that honest fact but he really wished that he had
“I decided that moment that I wanted the last thing I saw to be flowers…I think that should be enough for now, I should go check on everyone else…”
“Um…Yeah, sure…” Jun nodded watching as the teacher moved away from his table to go to the ones at the back and he was left chewing on his lip surprised when he saw Masaki winking and giving him the thumbs up as though he had done something impossible.
Feeling a little awkward under the stare he quickly looked away heading over to the desk and looking at the vast number of flowers wondering where he was meant to start.
