The Midwife

Ninomiya ‘Nino’ Kazunari flicked through a magazine that his girlfriend, Amari Etsuko had brought home from shopping. It was a young woman’s fashion mag, which included horoscopes and diet advice, along with pictures of young male idols posing in cute but seductive poses. He wasn’t completely sure why his girlfriend had brought it as she normally hated these types of things, rolling her eyes as she muttered things under her breath about impressionable young girls. He himself had no real interest in it either but it was helping to pass the time while he was on call. The sound of somebody clearing their throat had him pulling his eyes up from the magazine so he could look at Etsuko as she padded into the kitchen wearing a pair of shorts, slippers, and one of his t-shirts.
Being slim and short in stature himself it wasn’t baggy on his girlfriend but instead clung to her in all the right kind of places, accenting her breasts and her slim waist. Her hair was in complete disarray around her beautiful face and she looked at him through squinted eyes trying her best to block out the light from the bulb overhead. She rubbed her eyes on the ball of her hand and shuffled her way to the fridge. Knowing from experience that she wasn’t really awake and was just going through the motions he watched her with amusement on his face as she pulled out the apple juice and began to drink it straight from the carton.
They had been best friends for the entirety of their lives together. Growing up in a town with a grand population of only 616 people meant they had the luxury of going to school together and playing together almost every day. It helped that their interests had been in tune and that they had had almost the same dream of going to nursing school. The only real difference was that he had decided to specialise in midwifery while Etsuko had stayed in general practice working in the small cottage hospital.
They had finally started dating in college though Nino was sure that they had been dating without the sex for most of their lives. He had brought a ring with his first pay check but he hadn’t given it to her yet. He wasn’t completely sure why he was delaying. Etsuko was incredible, attractive, smart, fun, and unbelievably supportive in everything. The only reason he had been able to through with midwifery was because she had been at his side. He supposed it was because he didn’t know if he was staying in the village where they had been born and brought up that he hadn’t asked her to do the honourable thing.
Ever since they had come back and he had been appointed as one of only three district midwives he had been met with opposition and suspicion. The women didn’t want him because what would he know about all that? And the men didn’t want him because anybody that had trained to deal with a woman’s private area was only interested in one thing. The big city hadn’t been much better but he could have been working in one of the big maternity hospitals. Even tonight he doubted that anyone was going to call for him. Most of the woman would rather go through a painful difficult labour alone than call for a midwife when they knew that he was the one on call.
He wasn’t stupid, he had known from the moment he had stood up in school and said that he would be a midwife that people thought that he was odd but he had hoped that would go away when he was an adult. Etsuko shuffled back to the only bedroom in their almost rundown apartment and Nino allowed himself a smile before looking down at the magazine again met with the smiling faces of SakurAiba an up and coming idol pairing who weren’t exactly musical but had won the nations hearts by being extremely adorable with both animals and children. Sighing he refilled his coffee and then settled down to read the article knowing that it was going to be a long and silent night.
