“This is the house of the doctor?”

“Yes, this is it” Satoshi nodded looking up at the house which must have been beautiful once. It wasn’t as grand as his own, but there were many large rooms inside. Most of the windows were covered with wood now and he wondered if the doctor was still inside. It had been three years since he had last spoken to her after all. He had given her a vast investment to keep her experiments running but he felt guilt that he hadn’t been back before now “She is something of a recluse” He muttered weakly and needlessly before turning to his driver “I’m not sure how long we will be”

“I will take the carriage around the block a few times, sir, find them some water”

“Thank-you” Satoshi gave the man a smile and then strode up the steps to the door while the carriage rattled and rolled away. He hoped that he looked more confident than he was feeling and he breathed deeply through his nose. If Doctor Monroe had packed up and left, then he was all out of ideas for what Sho could do to save Masaki. Monroe had been the only person that he knew working on a cure for the black lung. He used his walking cane to rap on the door before reluctantly pulling on a rusty metal handle to ring the bell. For a moment. he was sure that it hadn’t rang but eventually he heard it sound in the depths of the house.

“Are you really sure about this, Satoshi? The house looks deserted and, even if it’s not, would you trust somebody that lives here to hold the cure for the black lung?”

“You may see that Sho, but what I see is somebody who has invested everything they own into finding a cure for a sickness that nobody else cares about” Satoshi snapped hotly knowing that if he had been less fortunate with his patroness he too would have been living in a dilapidated house and treated as a mad man. He felt the rush of passion running through him again and he revelled in it knowing he hadn’t felt this passion since he was a youth. “Even you had no desire to find the cure until it could benefit you”

“But you did?”

“Doctor Monroe was one of the many people that I invested in.” Satoshi admitted slowly pulling on the metal chain with a little more determination this time hoping that the Doctor hadn’t gone the same way as some of her contemporaries and they were about to find a body. “Her research alone was worth the money I spent, but you are right, even I had no real motivation to find a cure until now because I know how much it will hurt Nino to lose his brother”

“Don’t berate yourself so much, Satoshi, you do more than most” Sho told him but Satoshi shook his head slowly biting on his lower lip before he said heavily;

“I did once but then I gave up” Satoshi paused speaking jumping as he turned to the opening door. Doctor Monroe was much the same way he remembered her from three years-ago. She was wearing a pair of grey trousers and a shirt which was splattered with what he really didn’t want to know. Only now she was wearing spectacles and had a stripe of grey and there were deep lines around her mouth and eyes. “Doctor Monroe? I’m sorry for disturbing you at such an early hour, I am Ohno Satoshi and this is my friend Sakurai Sho, you were good enough to give me some information three years ago, about the black lung”

“I remember you, come in if you wish” Monroe bowed her head slowly and then moved back into the house allowing Satoshi to glance swiftly at his friend and give a small smile before turning and following the doctor into the house. It was fouler than he remembered the stench almost over-whelming but he ignored it completely navigating the hallways until they found their way into the well-remembered laboratory. “Sit if you want” Monroe waved her hand in the direction of the almost crumbling chairs “I would offer you refreshments but I’m sure you wouldn’t trust anything that I offered”

“Thank-you” Satoshi smiled positioning himself on the edge of the chair and looking at the doctor who sat on her desk with her legs crossed and her eyes a little blank. “Have you still been working on the cure for the black lung?”

“Progress is slow when there is no one alive that I might test it on”

“I think that we might be able to help you there”

Sounds like it is indeed moving forward. I'm curious about what will happen and hope that nobody realises Aiba is ill before he gets the sponsorship and they can help him
