The Wall part 10
Jan. 24th, 2017 10:44 amSatoshi carefully wrapped his gift for Nino in brown paper not wanting it to be damaged in transit. He had put a lot of thought into his gift after first meeting Nino and then again after talking to Jun and he had come to the happy conclusion that his first idea was the right one. It wasn’t anything particularly grand or expensive, something that he knew most of those hoping for a sponsor would give, but he hoped that it would be useful for the boy and his brother. It was a large collection of food, spices, and medicines all in a large leather and iron box. It came to his knee and was three times as wide as he was. It was filled will all kinds of food and medicines that he hoped that Nino would use to make his and the lives of those he was closes to better the way that he would like.
He would have given a bigger box but he could imagine that Nino would take that as an insult. He had put in a few of his favourite sweetened and candied fruits. In the box was also directions to his farms though he was sure that Nino would be disappointed when he saw the underdeveloped land that hadn’t produced even grass. He had gotten help from some of the best farmers inside the wall but the land was still too corrupted to be viable but he didn’t want to believe and accept that. If they could get the outside to be able to produce food of their own, then there was a very real chance that they would be able to work their own parcels of land.
He gave a sigh deciding that there was nothing else that he could for the safety of the present and then pulled on the cord which informed the staff that he wanted his carriage and then pulled on another of his woollen jumpers. It was in much better condition than his last one and he had even washed his hair for the occasion. Glancing into the mirror of the wall he ran his fingers through his soft looking like brown hair slowly and then decided that he would have to do. It wasn’t as though he was going to get longer than ten minutes with Nino in this second meeting. He grabbed the gift, grunting with pain at how heavy it was, listening to the little jars and vials clinking together a little more sharply than he was happy with and carefully held it to his chest. His muscles strained with the effort and he was actually glad that he hadn’t gotten a larger box of things for Nino.
“Good luck today, sir” Watanabe said softly as he left through the side door which was ordinarily used for tradesman but he had always insisted on using it hating the large double doors that were almost twice the size of him. His father had loved it watching with delight as his visitors gazed in wonder at the marble and crystal that made up the great hall. Satoshi had often wanted to rip it out but he also knew that with wealth came power and he was one of the few lords granted one on one interviews with the royal family and he hoped that in time he might convince them to change their views about the outsiders.
“Thank-you…” Satoshi smiled setting down the large box with a thunk against the door not surprised when it was immediately taken by his carriage driver. Satoshi pulled on his coat and gloves and looking at his butler “I will be having lunch with Sho today so there’s no reason that you all shouldn’t take the day off and do whatever you’d like…”
“Thank-you sir, I will let the staff know…” Watanabe gave him a happy smile clearly thinking of asking the cook out. Satoshi knew that the pair were courting and had been for a while but they were taking it slow. Satoshi smiled and nodded his head as he gave himself one last glance saying;
“You know where the wages are kept, if anyone would care to go out…”
“Thank-you sir…I am sure that they will be pleased…” Satoshi nodded again and then stepped out outside his carriage already waiting for him. The door was already opened he stepped onto the little metal stepped up and in settling himself into the chair. “To the gate and then get yourself off out with that pretty girl you’ve been seeing George…”
“Right, you are sir…” The young carriage drive agreed clicking his tongue and flicking the whip. The horses lurched into life pulling him through the streets. His carriage was an old-style affair and was easily recognisable on the streets. Often this was how he had gained members of his household staff. Many of them, like Watanabe and George, had served in other households until incidents and circumstances had forced them out. George had been fired from his last position due to a misunderstanding. He wouldn’t have been placed out over the wall but would have been executed without question but Satoshi had taken him in and fought his case in front of the court.
Satoshi had been ridiculed for his choice but George, like Watanabe, had always been, almost overly, loyal to him and he had never regretted his choice of employing him. The streets were fuller than he would have liked but George skilfully moved his way through the crowds. The wall, always a dominating presence in their lives no matter which side of it they lived, came closer into view. They were still pulled up outside the guard house.
“I’ll get your box sir” George said getting down from his seat and opening the door for him and Satoshi smiled gratefully glad that he didn’t have to carry the box up the many steps to the gate which was closed tightly.
“Thank-you, George…” Satoshi hummed getting out slowly stretching out his back and smiling as he saw Sho coming towards them bearing a box in his hands and a smile on his face. “Sho, I thought that you would have already been here by now…”
“There isn’t much point when the gift giving doesn’t start until 10…” His friend said with a smile walking with him to the steps as George was making his way down the box on the top step “You do know that you are meant to give only one gift to each person, right?”
“…Yes…I followed the rules…I am giving food…What about you?”
“You’ll have to wait and see…”
