Nino stood in the wicker basket staying as close to Jun as possible the pilot smiling at him from the other side. They hadn’t even taken off yet but he couldn’t deny that his nerves were starting to swirl around in his stomach. He had always wanted to go on one ever since he had seen it flying over his house but never in his life had he actually thought he would be on one. Flames swirled up into the balloon and slowly it started to rise lifting them up slowly from the floor. He gave a squeal and then pressed into Jun his hand clutching at the older man’s hand. Their fingers linked tightly and he was soothed to see that Jun was smiling at him.
“Are you afraid of heights, brat?” He asked and stubbornly Nino shook his head before feeling sick as some sand bags were dropped and they lift hair into the air swaying slowly from side to side.
“N-No…I’m afraid of plunging to my death…” He whispered looking out over the side of the wicker basket. They weren’t really that high into the air yet but there was something unnerving about the way they were already swaying in a breeze. “We’re in a wicker basket and a balloon…”
“Isn’t it great? I’ve always dreamed of doing this…When I was a kid Satoshi said that he would take me on one…But mum refused saying that it was too much money…” Jun mused slowly his free hand holding at the basket as he gave a happy grin his cheeks a little pink as though he was embarrassed that he’d admitted that Nino found himself kissing the cheek again.
“Me too…There was one that looked like a ladybird that would fly constantly around where I lived…I would sit on the roof and watch it…” He mumbled remembering that that hot air balloon had been like his escape from his mother and step-father. It was the very symbol of flying above your problems. “Even more than an aeroplane or a helicopter I wanted to go in one…”
“And now you have…” Jun chuckled as and Nino nodded realising that at some point they had managed to get higher than the trees and he could look down and see the tops of them and the waterfall that Jun had talked about. He moved his eyes this way and that as they rose higher and higher into the sky and everything became like a child’s toy set. It was everything that he had ever dreamed of and yet more and his heart skipped and danced around before he turned to the pilot and asked all of the questions that he’d wanted to know as a child and he noticed that Jun was looking eagerly at the man as well.
“How does an air balloon fly?” He asked knowing that it was something that everyone else probably knew but it was still interesting to him and the pilot gave a smile and hummed slowly;
“Hot air is less dense than cool air; the heated air causes the balloon to rise simply because it is lighter than an equal volume of cold air….” He said lighting the flame again and they slowly rose up a little bit more “Buoyancy is an upward force that the air exerts, and it helps hot-air balloons and blimps stay in the air…That’s why we have the burning to heat up the air inside the balloon…”
“Right…And how do you steer it?”
“…You don't...Or rather at least not in the normal sense of the word…” The man hummed softly still not sounding bored or irritated with his questions even if he must have heard them a million times before “They travel in the direction of the wind, which varies at different altitudes…You ride the air currents and can somewhat use that as a way of changing direction by burning to go up, or allowing the air to cool to go down, and catch different airstreams at different heights…”
“Wow…But…Then you won’t land in the same place?”
“Nope…When we land…I’ll radio my colleague and he’ll pick you up and get you back to the car don’t worry…Just enjoy the flight…”
