Nino blinked as he looked at himself in the mirror. He had settled for black suit trousers but a casual top not wanting anyone to think that he was trying too hard or too little. His face was almost completely white the only colour was the dark shadows that framed his eyes giving his face a hollow almost skeletal appearance today was his first day. He’d been to the school since he’d come home, he’d even sat in on a few lessons but today was the day that he had to step up in front of a body of students and actually talk to them. Last night he had gone over everything that he was required to cover for both the students education and his own. Everything so much more complicated than acting had been but his was determined to succeed. He groaned loudly as he looked down at his watch and he saw Jun coming to stand behind him and he sighed happily as his arms came to wrap around his waist.
“Primrose…Stop worrying…You know you’re going to be fantastic…Your room is ready, the stage has been dusted…” Jun murmured his lips pressing against his cheek. Nino wanted to lean into it but Jun was already pulling away and grabbing the car keys from the side as he asked “Have you got your lunch?”
“Yes mama…” Nino sighed rolling his eyes even though he was smiling a little “And my handkerchief and some spare money if I want a drink…”
“I actually think you’ll get drinks provided in the staff room…” Jun pointed out and Nino shook his head patting Peanuts head before grabbing his lead and carrying him out as they headed to the car.
“Jun-sensei, Nino-sensei” People called to them and Nino grinned waving brightly glad to be called sensei. He got into the car and placed Peanut into the foot well some of his nerves dissipating as he put on the seatbelt. He was fine, he could do this and he only had to be there until five in the afternoon. It was going to be strange to actually have some time in the evening to relax with no rehearsals until midnight or travelling from theatre to theatre. He rested against the head rest as Jun got into the car and drove away from the village.
Traffic was thin and they made it into the tiny town with 15 minutes to spare. Jun parked up in front of the school and Nino’s heart thumped against his ribs. Picking up his bag and stroking Peanuts head.
“Phone me when you’re ready and I’ll come and pick you up…” Jun told him stroking his ear and cheek and Nino sighed wondering if it would be childish if he said that he didn’t want to go. He unfastened the seat belt and turned to look at his husband grabbing his hand.
“If you’re not busy…” He mumbled playing with the rings on his fingers and Jun laughed kissing the top of his head.
“I’ll be here…I promise…” Jun promised and Nino grabbed the handle of the door and then climbed out. He gave Jun a wave and then marched up the slab path towards the dull grey building. The dark blue door was opened for him and he stepped inside the familiar scents of school washing over him again. He walked towards the staff room and to his horror and embarrassment he knocked before he entered. Luckily there were only two other teachers inside and they hadn’t seemed to notice his childlike knock, both were deep in conversation when he entered and it wasn’t until he put his bag down on the table
“Ah Ninomiya-sensei…” They bowed and Nino returned it weakly “Nervous about the first day ne?”
“A little” He admitted sinking into the spiny chair startled when it dipped unexpectedly with his weight.
“You should be fine, drama’s an optional lesson so the students taking it have an interest in it…” The woman told him gently “It’s not like maths and science…Which are required subjects…”
“Tell me about it, I teach English and sometimes its like I’m talking to a load of little robots…” The man with the light blond moustache said with a sigh heading to the coffee machine “Coffee…Or I think there’s some tea left…”
“Coffee…Thanks” Nino said with a smile relaxing again he had barely noticed the other teachers coming in but soon the place had filled up and everybody was talking or talking out their lesson plans for the day and Nino did the same as a yellow cup was placed down onto the desk.
“Hey, Nino” The receptionist smiled putting a hand on his shoulder “Ready for the day?”
“Just about…” He nodded and then a memory sparked in his brain of a silver picture frame that he had unwrapped from her and her partner “Thanks for the card and present…”
“Thanks for the invite sorry that we couldn’t make it to the wedding I hear it was beautiful though…” She replied with a grin and Nino nodded
“Yeah it was…” He murmured thoughtfully still in a daze about how special the wedding had been. Even now he could feel the happy surprised buzz he had felt when he had stepped up to the summit and seen the decorations.
“You’ll have to bring in photos tomorrow…” She said rolling her eyes with a pout as the bell rang out sharply. Nino jolted blinking when he realised that he had to head to his classroom soon “You’ll be fine Nino-kun, just be yourself…You managed to get us all passionate about drama even when you were a student I think you’ll still have that…I have to sit in on back to back meetings until lunch but I’ll see you then ne?”
“Sure…I’ll see you then Miki-chan…” Nino agreed getting up as the other teachers filed out. He had another twenty minutes until homeroom had finished but he wanted to get to his class room and sort things out before the students arrived.
His classroom was the cleaned up drama room and Nino had to stop himself from grinning as he looked at the stage and he remembered what he had Jun had done there. On the floor around the stage tables had been placed along with a desk that he set his coffee on. Away from the stage a roll out board had been placed and he pulled it out and wrote his name on it but laying a questionnaire that he had spent ages writing and re-writing last night. After he had finished that he stood on the stage that he had practiced on as a child looking out over the classroom. Most of his childhood had been spent in this room, his life had taken him on a journey and back but now here he was again walking the same boards and hopefully inspiring a new generation on actors and actresses.
He looked down at his hand then smiled as he kissed his wedding ring. The bell sounded out again and he heard the footsteps coming towards his door and he sighed his nerves calming and his mind becoming clearer. The door opened at a bunch of tiny students came in looking almost as pale as he was and he smiled. Ready to take on the next stage of his life now that he was at last finally home.
