“…Check…Checkmate…” Jun spluttered sliding his piece into place with a sweaty hand his heart skipping against his ribs as he made sure that there were no other moves that could be done to get his father out of the position he was in. Ohno was doing the same his eyes moving around the board thoughtfully for a moment before he smiled and pushed down his king with his forefinger until it clattered against the stone board his head bowing as his chin came to rest on his chest.
“Congratulations…My son…You played exceptionally well…” The king said softly and Jun gave a strangled nervous laugh knowing that his father hadn’t let him win because he never did that. It was part of the lessons that they had all undergone growing up with the man and Jonah and Ethan were both gawping in disbelief “Kazunari’s strategy with your own rash and bold movements…It appears that it works well together…”
“…You could tell? That my husband helped me?” Jun asked looking into the face of his husband who had been standing beside the king throughout the game. He hadn’t given him hints but he had been able to read the expressions in the man’s eyes as he touched the pieces and it had aided his own movements. Ohno let out a chuckle his eyes going from Kazu’s face to Jun’s before he nodded saying;
“Of course…It was obvious that you had taken Kazunari’s instruction in the game but…It was your rash, devil may care, nature that kept me on my toes…” Jun flushed at the praise of his character knowing that his father had always thought of his spontaneous nature as the enemy trying to get him to curb it telling him that it would only get him into trouble “You have done well my son…Sons...Together you make a magnificent and will make a truly formidable team…”
“Thank-you father…” Jun whispered still unable to believe that he had won the game. He had hoped that he would have been able to last for a little while but to actually win was something completely unexpected. His eyes went to Kazu again and his husband gave a grin and a thumbs up and that, for Jun, was worth more to him than even the words of his beloved father and that feeling only grew when Kazu came forward and pressed his lips to his cheek.
“Congratulations, Jun…”
“…Thank-you, Kazu...” Jun breathed in response his heart once again skipping against his ribs at the way the voice sounded in his ear. It sounded incredible and he wanted to pull him down into a hug but he remembered the promise that he had made to only do things that Kazu was comfortable with. It was difficult though it was made a little easier by the fact that Kazu’s arms came up around his neck and he hugged him with more daring than he had ever hugged him before. Jun returned the hug wrapping his arms around the waist before noticing that his family were discreetly trying to exit the room and leave them alone for some privacy. “Thank-you for teaching me to play…I know that I wasn’t a good student…”
“You won...You were a good student…Um…I…I…Are you ready for bed?” Kazu asked somewhat nervously and Jun nodded slowly feeling both confused but curious. Normally on the eve of the winter festival he and his family would stay up late and welcome it in together opening one present each before bed but if Kazu was ready to go to bed then he was more than happy to go up with. “I have a present for you…Um…”
“Okay…Let’s go…”
