Sun Priestess part 8
Juneiku walked east his eyes continuously looking back over his shoulder looking for the guards that he was sure his mother was going to send after him. He had no idea how long he had been walking but he did know that his legs were aching and it was already as black as midnight. There were stars overhead but the moon…The moon appeared to be brighter than it had ever been lighting the road ahead clearly as if it was a lighted torch. Those of the sun temple hated the moon, saying that it was just a cruel projection of the glorious sun, it was a false light that watched over the long dark as its master. But now Juneiku loved the light and was glad of it on the road knowing that without it he would have slipped into the trenches that ran along either side of the road and would have been lost in the foul muddy water that acted like quicksand. It was a foul smelling bog that seemed to act like a living vicious creature sucking anything that was unfortunate enough to get too close under.
Juneiku tried not to focus on the water for too long, his eyes only on the road that was stretching out in front of him. A sign he had passed when first leaving the temple had told him that the village was 6 miles, something that would have been difficult in the sunlight but near impossible without the large moon. He wanted to stop moving to sit and take some of the water that he had brought with him but he was too afraid. Those from the temple would be on horseback and though they might wait for first light to come he had to be at the village and gone before then. He still wasn’t sure how he was going to get a horse, he knew what the projection had said and he assumed that the innkeeper’s daughter was sick but who would trade a horse for a few words of what could be false comfort?
Lights came to view ahead of him and for a moment Juneiku was sure that they were yet more starlight until he saw that there was buildings around them. It was still about a mile away but even from this distance and the aide of the moon, Juneiku could see that it wasn’t a town or even a village really just a small collection of ramshackle huts clustered closely together. It was a tactic that even larger towns used as staying as closely together as possible meant that in the height of the long dark in the high snow you could dig tunnels underneath it to move around like rabbits in a warren.
Seeing the light spurred Juneiku to move faster, his feet dragging slightly in the earth, stones making their way under his feet and getting trapped between the leather of his sandals and his skin until they were being cut up as he moved.
Even the pain from his now sliced feet didn’t stop him and in what felt like an eternity Juneiku arrived at the village and saw the inn.
TBC
A/N: I hope that this is okay ^_^
