“Ikebana isn't just sticking flowers into a vase and hoping for the best” Nino spoke clearly and, compared to how he had been the first-time Jun had seen him, softly as he stood in the front of the room with his hands lightly ghosting over flowers that he had selected and laid on a table beside a pretty pale pink vase. It contrasted perfectly against the purple flowers that he had chosen. “Anybody can do that. Ikebana is about taking the flower and bringing out its beauty, it’s about the freedom of expression, of showing your feelings” As he spoke Nino carefully started working selecting flowers and taking a pair of scissors and snipping at the bottoms.

It was almost amazing how quickly he worked and how effortlessly he made it all seem. The flowers all complicated each other well and although there wasn’t many, those that were in looked so good together that he was glad that he had been able to secure Nino to teach them. “A lot of teachers make their students work in silence, for most of my lessons I don’t expect that” Nino said slowly dismantling the vase that he had created before putting it back together again in a different, but still beautiful way. It was as though he wasn’t even trying but Jun could see that, although he was talking to them, his eyes were focused on the flowers in front of him. “I encourage the exchanging of ideas, of encouraging each other however for this first lesson I expect you to work on your own and in silence. I want to see what level you’re at. You may use any of the pots and the flowers that are behind me. You may begin”

“That’s it?” Sho huffed looking a little put out at the lack of direction. Jun could tell that it was his own fear at getting something wrong that was driving him but Jun could see mild irritation at being questioned flaring up in Nino’s eyes. His lips twitched and Jun had a feeling the young teacher was going to get as rude as he had been in the flower shop. “You’re not going to suggest colours or styles?”

“That would defeat the idea of my finding out what you can do. I want to see what you’re capable of, I want to get a feeling for where you are now.” Nino answered in a soft professional voice which would have been okay if he didn’t if you suck then I will tell you, the same if you’re any good. So how about you just get on with it?”

“Nino! Seriously! You could be a little bit nicer” Masaki whined rolling his eyes slowly from behind him his hand coming to nudge at his back in a playful, almost intimate, way and Jun wondered if they were more than just friends. The idea was almost unpleasant to him and he couldn’t understand why he felt like scowling at the handsome tall man. “You’re always like this”

“And you’re always irritating. If you weren’t so good at raising flowers I would have cut ties with you, years ago” Nino growled under his breath bit it was playful sound and his cheeks were just a little flushed and his eyes shifty as rolled them slowly and smirked as Masaki cried;
“I knew it! You’re abusing my friendship for flowers!”

“It’s a mutually beneficial relationship, Masaki” Nino responded slowly before his face tensed again and once again he motioned to the flowers “You don’t have to keep standing there, I told you to get on with it”

Jun, like the rest of the class, started for a moment and then moved forward as one to the flowers and collection of other things that were on the table. Jun watched as Sho took a handful of flowers of different sizes, styles, and colours, along with a gaudy looking vase. It was something that could have looked beautiful if it was decorated with anything less than the vast number of flowers that Sho carried. In the end, Jun settled for a plain grey stone vase embossed with a single flower on the front. He spent his time choosing his flowers holding them up and matching them to each other before sniffing at them carefully remembering how the flowers Nino had arranged for his mother complimented each other with both looks and scent.

“Those are bellflower” Masaki informed him softly with a very broad wink as he picked up a small and insignificant looking flower that seemed to be out of place amongst the flashier ones “They are Nino’s favourite but they’re tricky to display right…Good luck…”
