Masako tried to ignore the jealousy that was building up inside her as she watched her lover sitting comfortably with the two first years. He wasn’t doing anything that was overtly sexual just being his normal self but he was hers and it still caused little pops of jealousy to see him with other girls. Nino was watching her face for a long time and she knew that he knew that she was jealous. She gave him a smile disappointed that neither he nor her sister had recognised the girl in the picture. When she had first seen it, seen how good it was she had hoped that maybe it would be all over and that Nino would be happy again. He was trying, she knew that, but she also knew Nino better than anyone else and she knew that he was in pain and she knew that there was nothing that she could do to prevent that pain.
“I made everyone drinks…” Nino and Jun’s mum said her voice breaking almost cheerfully into the mood that had settled around them and Masako got to her feet quickly to accept the tray. She had a soft spot for Jun’s mum who was always well put together and seemed to take almost everything in her stride with a cool and calm confidence that Masako couldn’t achieve, her temper was way too hot and all her emotions were too close to the surface, but she was determined that one day she would learn.
“Thank-you, aunty” She smiled and the older woman hummed giving a smile while looking down at the picture a frown on her very pretty face.
“Is that the person that’s leaving all of those nasty flyers?” She asked her head tilting to one side as she rubbed her chin “Hmm…I think I saw her skulking around yesterday…She wasn’t wearing any of your school uniforms though…I thought it was one of Akio’s friends…There was a scar on her temple…Just there shaped like a half moon…”
“…Moon?” Nino whispered slowly sounding almost choked as he grabbed the paper and pulled it too him his eyes searching the face “Um…Is there any chance you could make her a little fatter?”
“Nino-chan?” Masako said uncertainly as the girls quickly pulled pencils out of her bag and flipped over to a new page her hands frantically working as she did as she was told almost completely copying the picture but making her fatter around the edge. Nino shifted his position until he was almost leaning over the girl giving light orders as her hand worked. It was an amazing process to watch as the girl from the first picture was de-aged and made plumper with shorter hair and a half moon scar on her head. As the picture developed Nino grew more and more excited though still troubled with a pinched expression around his eyes and Masako hit him on the back asking “You do know her?”
“…I think I…Knew her…Once…A long time ago…She was my Onee-chan…In the orphanage…I gave her the scar on her head…” Nino answered looking troubled his eyes not leaving the black and white sketch as it took shape.
“What? Then why would she do this?” Masako, Jun, and Yutsuko all asked at the same time and Nino gave a shrug his eyes focused on the picture. Masako frowned completely lost now wondering why and how somebody from Nino’s past would both want to do something so cruel like that and why. Nino was a brat and Masako knew that he had been a very angry little boy he had told her that much when they had first become friends but she couldn’t imagine anyone hating him enough after all these years to hurt him like this. Even if he had given her a scar. Long minutes ticked by as everyone waited with baited breath for the picture to be finished and when it was done Masako had to admit that the new, younger portrait and the older one could almost be the same girl. In fact there was no almost about it and Nino gave a shaky sigh sitting back on his hunches and taking the new picture.
“Mai-Onee-chan…” He mumbled sounding like he didn’t believe it and Masako knew that there was some kind of story here that he wasn’t telling them. Nino went very quiet staring off into space for a long time before giving the two first years a smile “There see…You’ve been more than helpful…We know who it is…”
“One of them…” Yutsuko mumbled blushing when everyone turned to look at her “This girl wouldn’t know who we all are or where to find my locker if she wasn’t a part of our school…”
“She asked me for Aiba-senpai’s…”
“….I guess but I still think that there is somebody else…” Masako nodded having to agree with her sister there was way too much that couldn’t be explained without this Mai character having help. She still couldn’t understand why whoever it was would have this much hate inside of them.
“Well I guess it’s lucky that we have a list of about twenty people that hate me enough to help her out…” Nino mumbled holding up a piece of paper and Masako’s jaw muscles twitched with anger her fists clenching and unclenching. Seriously, she wondered, what was it with people? Why couldn’t they just accept that Nino was happy? “Well thank-you for this…At least now we have some idea who has caused this…”
“And soon we’ll be able to stop them…”

“Do you have any idea why she would do this? Or who would be helping her?” Masako mumbled pushing the sketch pad with her fingertip when they were alone in Nino’s bedroom. The girls and her sister had been driven home but she had stayed back glad that she had the day off tomorrow. Nino just shook his head giving her half genuine smile his head coming to rest on her as he flopped back against her so he was lolling all over her like a limpet. Masako didn’t care though her arms wrapping firmly around his stomach pressing her cheek against his.
“Nope not a clue”
“Then we’re not really any closer to finding out…” Masako grumbled and Nino reached up stroking the side of her face and shaking his head from side to side as he told her soothingly;
“It’s better than we had this morning and knowing that it’s Mai, combined with this list…We’re narrowing it down…”
“But it’s not fast enough and you’re still hurting…” Masako pouted as she let out a long and heavy sigh that caused her whole body to tremble and Nino gave a chuckle.
“I’m fine…I have more people than I ever thought possible helping me…And I have a lover who would give up everything that he’s comfortable with just to be with me…” He said in that overly cheerful voice that he always used when he was trying to pacify her “Over all I think I should thank Mai and whoever’s helping her for helping me realise that…”
“Seriously, Nino-chan…Why would she do this? How did you give her the scar?” Masako said wanting a serious conversation.
“…When I was little I was dumped into the orphanage…My parents aren’t dead you know…They just didn’t want me…So I was stuck in this place and…In those places it’s like you have to be a trick pony…Unless you’re a baby or cute nobody is going to want you…” Nino sighed and Masako knew that his eyes had closed tightly. He hated talking about the orphanage more than he hated talking about the seemingly never ending foster families that came and went. He had only been about three when he was first left by his parents and Masako could imagine her friend being very scared and confused “So the other children resented me for being there…At first I was upset but then I became very angry…Mai…She was one of the older kids, she was only about 5 or 6 but even that was too old to be wanted or even fostered out and so she…She picked on the younger kids mercilessly…And she started on me…”
“You were three!”
“I know…Plus I was cute…Two things that she hated most in ‘Newbies’ she tried to push me down the stairs but even at three I was quick and I managed to dodge out of her way and she fell down herself…” Nino whispered and Masako ground her teeth together, trying to understand how anyone could do that.
“She sounds mental…How could she hate you for so long?”
“That wasn’t the last time I had to deal with her…Not long before I met Aunty Mochi…I was sent back to the orphanage…She laughed saying that nobody would want me…I don’t think that she was very happy that Aunty Mochi took me only a month after being there…Whatever it is I’m going to stop her…”
“I’m going to help you too! I promise…” Masako almost screamed in his ear and Nino laughed twisting around and hugging her tightly his lips grazing over hers.
“I know…I love you…”
“Love you more…Nino-chan…” Masako replied happily loving the truly happy smile Nino gave her as he nodded before pulling out of her arms.
“Good…Now go…Bug your lover before he comes bursting through the door, I’m phoning my old man…”
“Okay Nino-chan” Masako laughed giving a salute and leaving the room determined to make Jun pay for making her jealous.
