“I’m going to bed…Don’t stay up too late…” Ninomiya Kazunari said kissing the corner of his lover’s mouth and Sakurai Sho nodded, happily receiving the kisses that his lover gave to him murmuring;
“I’ll be there in a few minutes…Love you…”
“I know” Nino said in response a flicker of pain in his eyes and Sho’s heart ached for him as he almost regretted saying the words as much as he hated hearing the reply. It was Nino’s standard response and Sho had gotten used to it now but it would still bother him sometimes when he never received it back. Today wasn’t actually one of those days, any more than it had been since he had learned the truth three months ago, today he was happy and content and Nino had been pressed up against him all evening with his head lazily pressed to his chest listening to his heartbeat as Sho talked with his younger brother Masaki. It was a good feeling and he doubted that anything could ruin it for him now. He kissed Nino’s forehead lightly and then allowed him to leave looking over at his brother who was looking more thoughtful than he had ever seen before.
“What’s up?” he asked grabbing his bottle of slightly warm beer from the table and Masako blinked shaking his head “No come on tell me what’s got you looking all pensive?”
"It’s…Nothing…Honestly…Just that…Ne Sho-nii are you really happy with Nino?" Masaki asked softly his eyes on Nino who was just walking out of the room. Sho stiffened a little his fists clenching as he prepared himself for battle, his brother had never shown any of their parents attitude toward him and his sexuality, in fact he had always assumed that Masaki and Nino were good friends or at least as good a friends as anybody could get to his lover. There were few people Nino talked to and even less that he connected to and trusted. In the eight years he had known him he had only ever heard Nino describe one person as a friend and that was the surly and seemingly distant Matsumoto Jun. Nino had been his best man but had refused to allow him anywhere near the church or reception though Jun had sent him an invite. It had hurt but he had assumed that Nino had his reasons even if he didn’t know what they were. He knew now of course, he hadn’t expected the flow of honesty that had come out of Nino’s mouth the day of their anniversary but he was glad that he had heard it. It was hard to compete with a dead man and he wasn’t sure that he wanted to but he loved Nino and he knew that, even if he still couldn’t bring himself to say the words aloud, Nino loved him in return.
"Yes why?” He snapped in answer to his brother’s question and Masaki quickly held up his hands shaking his head swiftly from side to side smiling;
“Don’t get all defensive! I like Nino-chan…You know I do but…”
“But…What?” Sho asked still not backing down determined that he would defend Nino no matter what.
“…Um…Well…” Masaki fumbled around for a while looking decidedly more nervous with each passing minute. His tongue scrapped over his lips and then his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down. “Well…You’ve been together for so long…But I’ve never heard him say I love you…”
“…And?” Sho growled slamming his bottle down onto the table and getting to his feet. He wasn’t really angry at his brother, he had a point after all, but it had touched a raw nerve and given everything that he and Nino were going through it was something that he didn’t want to talk about. “I don’t see what that has to do with you…”
“I didn’t mean anything, nii-chan!” Masaki gasped grabbing a hold of his hand trying to stop him from pacing backwards and forwards “I was just asking because I want you to be happy…”
“I am happy with Kazu…” Sho told him in another growl tugging his arm free. He should have stayed calm and talked about it sensibly, he knew that, but it was hard for him to control himself when it came to Nino and anything connected to him.
“Even though he’s as emotionally connected and warm as a wet fish?” Masaki snapped and Sho drew in a sharp intake of breath but before he could say anything his brother was continuing, in his mind digging a bigger hole for himself, “I know that you care about him Nii-chan but…8 years…”
“Shut up, you have no idea what you’re talking about…” Sho muttered “Whatever is going on between me and Kazu has nothing to do with you…”
“Okay…I’m sorry, Nii-chan…Maybe he does say it when you’re alone…” Masaki shrugged sinking back down into the chair and pulling a face that reminded Sho of the reasons why he could never stay mad at his baby brother. His bottom lip was sticking out and his eyes had a glassy sheen that gave him the impression of crying even though he wasn’t.
“He doesn’t say them, when we’re alone or otherwise and there’s a chance that he may never say them…” Sho admitted with a sigh sitting back down and running his fingers through his hair. Masaki gave a gasp clearly about to say something but Sho waved a hand motioning for him to stay quiet “…He has told me why and I respect that…Just believe me when I tell that Kazu isn’t unfeeling…Far from it…”
“Okay, nii-chan…I’m sorry…” Masaki mumbled and Sho gave a nod satisfied he grabbed his beer and drained the last few dregs before getting to his feet again.
“I’m going to bed…I’ll see you in the morning…” He said and Masaki nodded with a half enthusiastic smile still staring into space “Masaki, trust me I’m happier with Nino than I ever would be without him…”
“I…Don’t understand it Sho-nii but if that’s the truth then I’m sorry for saying that…” Masaki told him in a slightly less sulky voice and Sho chuckled ruffling his hair and bopping him on the nose.
“Good night, little brother…”
*~*~*~*~*
The bedroom was in darkness when he entered and he very carefully moved around the room trying not to disturb his lover even though he knew that it was too soon for him to be asleep yet.
“I didn’t mean to make you fight with your brother, Sho” Nino whispered in the dark and Sho cursed silently guessing that he should have known that Nino would be able to hear them. Their apartment was fairly large but voices still carried through the walls and the bedroom wasn’t that far away from the living room. In fact it was only separated by a door and a wall after all.
“You didn’t…Masaki said some stuff that he had no business saying…” Sho shrugged pulling off his shirt and tossing it vaguely in the direction of the clothes basket. Nino didn’t speak again until he was stripped down to his boxers and was sitting on the bed rubbing the back of his neck.
“He’s right thought…I’m as bout as warm as a rock…”
“…Hmm but rocks can be warmed up if somebody is patient enough…” Sho whispered grabbing his lover’s hand and closing his own around it making a great show of warming the skin by lightly rubbing it and blowing on it until Nino gave a small laugh and kicked out at him. “There see…All warm…” The taller man said letting go of the hand that was now slightly sweaty and very clearly warm. Nino stared at his hand a breath taking delicate smile gracing his lips and Sho wondered how anyone could think he was unfeeling. In his opinion Nino felt more than most people he just didn’t show it very easily which was why he was still unable to let Ohno go “Kazu, now I know your reasons I don’t care if you never tell me it…Masaki isn’t the first person to tell me that I should find somebody else you know…”
“He’s not?”
“Nope, not by a long shot…I am surprised that it’s taken him this long but I think that he had more faith in you than the others…” Sho admitted thinking that most people had said it in the first couple of months. He could see how much this was affecting Nino though and he was quick to reassure him “But…If he ever brings it up again, I’ll tell him exactly what I’ve told everyone else, they don’t know you at all. They don’t know what you do to me when you just look at me…Just with you being here I feel like I could take on the world…”
“I do all that?”
“Yup…So I don’t care if you’re never able to say three stupid little words I know that you feel them and I will tell you them every night because you should have been told it Kazu” He told him taking the sweaty hand again and kissing each of the fingers in turn “And I know that if Ohno was half the man that you make him out to be then he fell just as hard for you as I did and I know that even if he never said it…He felt it…”
