Sho was fuming as he entered his apartment, Nino’s story moving around and around in his head. He wanted to go to his parents and vent his anger but he didn’t trust himself to drive in this condition. He had only just found Masaki again he wasn’t going to lose him through an accident. He stripped off the suit and strolled around the living area in only his boxers allowing the cooling summer air to wrap around his body and sooth him, or that had been the wish in fact it did little to sooth the rage that was burning through his stomach. He had never expected to hate his parents more than he had as a teenager but that youthful bout of anger was nothing compared to what was in his heart now.

He went to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of ice cold beer and pulled the cap off with his fingers. It was a stupid trick that he had learned during his month of intense self-pity and drinking. He swirled the drink back in one go and then rested against the counter staring into space holding the cold empty bottle against his chest. How dare they mess with his life like that? How dare they threaten Masaki or his children? He knew that that they were hard but he had never suspected that they would be so callous and fucking heartless. His children, their grandchildren, and they had threatened them like they were vermin needed to be put down.

“Uncle Sho?” Katrina called, her voice echoing through the apartment and quickly Sho darted to the basket of laundry and pulled out a pair of shorts. They were faintly dirty but it was better than his niece catching him in only his boxers.

“In the kitchen…” He called back pulling the fabric up over his hips, thankfully just in time as Katrina popped her head around the door smiling cheerfully.

“Did you help Matsumoto-kun?” She asked pulling out a chair and sitting down staring at him expectantly. Sho sighed pushing away his anger as he placed the bottle onto the windowsill. It was still there in the back of his mind but he refused to show it in front of his lovable niece.
“Jun? Yeah, he was fine…” He nodded with a sigh his fingers scrapping through his hair deciding that it had been a long day and he was hungry. He wasn’t much of a cook so he thought that ready meals were the best thing in the world. He pulled on out of the fridge now and stuffed it into the microwave as Katrina started talking again;

“I’m still surprised that Matsumoto-san was your old friend!” She gasped her hands clapping together a few times sounding very excited by that “He’s so nice!”

“Why didn’t you tell me before?” Sho asked quickly realising that she must have known for a while, today couldn’t have been the first time that she had seen the picture in his bedroom “You saw that picture before today so why didn’t you tell me?”

“I thought it would be a good surprise!” she answered with a huge smile as she bounced up and down in her chair. Her smile fell away quickly though at his silence and nervously she started to bite on the corner of her mouth while playing around with her t-shirt “Did I do something wrong?”

“…No…Not really…” Sho answered, painful stabs of guilt cutting into his heart as he looked at the downcast expression. “But…There is a lot of complicated…”

“Matsumoto-kun and Shoko-chan are your children aren’t they?” She asked and the doctor was positive that his eyes almost dropped out of his head and his jaw was going to hit the floor in his shock.

“H-How?” He croaked and Katrina gave another shrug and a smile a dimple forming around the bottom of her mouth as her eyes flashed a little;

“I knew it straight away!” She answered her little chest puffing up in pride “They have your eyes and well with a name like ‘Shoko’ it wasn’t that big of a leap…”

“Kitty-Kat, you can’t tell them that…Please…” Sho begged and Katrina’s eyes knitted together thoughtfully her head tilting to one side as she let out a knowing hum;

“Is it a secret?”

“Yes…For now, like I said things are very complicated…” He answered stopping when the microwave beeped loudly informing him that his chicken and mushroom dinner was done. He opened the door and the slightly burnt plastic smell washed over him. Seriously, how bad cooking do I have to be that I can’t even use a microwave? He thought taking out his meal carefully and tossing it into the sink while Katrina wrinkled her tiny button nose in disgust. With a sigh Sho grabbed the last curry bread that had been saving and bit into it savouring the taste before turning back to his niece “I hope that one day though I can tell them and that I’m their other dad…”

“So…Will you be getting with Matsumoto-san?” Katrina asked and Sho hummed taking another bite of the bread. He gave a nod and a smile and the girl gave a cry clapping her hands together in her excitement.

“I hope so, do you know Uncle Takei…?” She asked and Sho frowned as he tried to remember where he had heard the name before. It came to him after only a few minutes, Nino had talked about him in the car, he was the man that had left Masaki and the children the house

“Matsumoto-san took care of him, and everybody else thought he was a mardy old bugger” Katrina continued when he gave a nod, her cheeks flushing a little and Sho sensed that she was just repeating what she had heard from somebody else “but when he was with Matsumoto-san he was always laughing! People were shocked!”

“Masaki has that effect on people, he always has…” Sho smiled fondly through the last bite of his bread and he gave a huge sigh wiping the crumbs from his fingers. Katrina giggled a little and nodded happily.

“Uncle Sho matches him very well! When are you going to tell him that you still love him?”

“I already have…But I don’t think he believes me…”

“…Hmm, I bet you were very direct and loud…But I bet you didn’t tell him everything!” Katrina said with disappointment on her face and Sho, once again, had to question how his sister could treat her as nothing but a disappointment the little girl in front of him was wise beyond her years “You always use long complicated words because you get nervous but that isn’t good! Matsumoto-san is like a rabbit! You have to be gentle!”

“Oh and what do you suggest?” Sho asked with a smile getting two can of cola from the fridge before going to sit at the table and staring at her. Katrina hummed blowing her cheeks out, deep in thought as she pulled the ring of the coke with her little finger before gasping;

“I know! I know! You should write him a letter! In a letter you’d have to think about what you were saying, ne!”  Sho was genuinely surprised by her suggestion. For him to write a letter he would have to sit down and think about what he wanted to say. Nino had told him pretty much the same thing as well, rushing into something wouldn’t persuade Masaki, who was clearly convinced he wasn’t good enough for him “Was that no good?” Katrina asked after the silence had continued on for some time and Sho pulled himself out of his thoughts to look at her and shaking his head

“No, I think that’s perfect…” He answered drinking from the can of coke his eyes going to the clock on the wall “Why are you up so late anyway?”

“Mum and dad have gone out again…” She shrugged nibbling on her lip and Sho felt another flash of rage flare through him his system knowing that after his talk with his parents he was going to have to have one with his sister and her husband. He drained his cola and then gave a sigh;

“Come on, drink that, brush your teeth and then bed…You can use mine I’ll sleep on the sofa…” He said with a yawn and Katrina got up looking guilty as she said;

“It’s okay…I can…”

“No arguments…” He growled, he didn’t care how secure the building was meant to be what kind of parents left their child alone at night? What if there was a fire? Katrina drank her drink slowly and then headed off to the bathroom while he went to the bedroom to sort out some covers for the sofa. After he had taken a light blanket, sheet and pillow he paused staring at the photo an idea forming in his head.
