“Ninomiya-Matsumoto-kun?” Sho croaked staring at the small man that was just grinning at him. There was suddenly a lot of anger in his heart as he thought about how many times he had gone to him for help to be told that he had no idea where Masaki was. He’d always known that it was a lie, but ‘Nino’ as he had liked to be called was a good actor and in the end he had started to believe him. He should have known better
“It’s just Ohno now, I decided that triple barrelled name would be too much…And frankly stupid…My husband is the sleepy faced old man in the corner…You can still call me Nino, though…” Nino grinned brightly settling himself on the arm of the sofa and rubbing his belly “Wow…I’d heard that you were back in town but…Wow…”
“Nino-chan knew and didn’t tell me?” Masaki asked coming in from the kitchen area carrying two cups of steaming coffee. He was still smiling and Sho was glad that he didn’t seem angry. “Here you go, a dash of milk and one sugar…Right?”
“Um…Yeah…” Sho lied, he hadn’t drank his coffee like that in years but he was so surprised and happy that Masaki had remembered how he used to have his coffee he was glad to drink it whatever way that it had been given to him.
“Yeah…Well I only heard about it today…I didn’t think it was worthy enough to waste money on a phone call I was going to tell you tonight…And then J-J, had to go and get all dramatic…” Nino said shoot a teasing glare at Jun who was laid out on the sofa, his legs up over the back his nose in a book that Sho recognised as the lord of the rings. A pretty hard going book for a ten year old, Sho thought impressed by his son. Jun looked up his face flushing brightly as he gave a scowl at the bratty older man
“I had an attack, I didn’t mean too!” He croaked sounding breathless and irritated. Sho could understand his irritation it was an affect that Nino had had on him ever since he’d first met him. But he could see that it was a teasing kind of irritation and he also suspected that his son had a mild crush on the man that still looked no different from when they were kids.
“Yeah, yeah, princess you just like being the centre of attention…” Nino grinned his eyes warm with a fond kind of love as his hand came up and he ruffled the black mop of hair. Jun’s blush got even worse and he quickly buried his face back in his book his ears burning like a sunset, which only got worse when Nino whispered “I’m glad you’re okay, Princess J-J…”
“Stop teasing him!” Masaki sighed flopping down into an overstuffed arm chair and motioning for Sho to sit in a wingback chair that was a little moth eaten. Sho did as he was bid, feeling slightly uncomfortable when he realised that he was being stared at by his daughter who seemed to be bubbling away like a kettle with questions a beat up old atlas in her hands.
“Is everything okay?”
“Can I show you the places that I want to go?” She asked in a rush and not knowing what else to say he nodded his head surprised when he suddenly found her in his lap the book open and resting awkwardly on her little legs. “There, see Venice is first, I’m going to take daddy because he’s always wanted to go and then I want to go to London to study medicine at Bart’s hospital…”
“I studied there…” Sho told her and Shoko turned her face her mouth dropping open in shock as her eyes widened in excitement.
“You did?!” She screeched so loudly that he was positive that he was going to burst an ear drum. He gave a laugh and nodded again saying;
“Yeah…I only went because of Sherlock…”
“Holmes! Dr Watson he studied there!” Jun finished from the sofa, the lord of the rings book and his embarrassment forgotten as he moved closer to the edge of his seat. Sho nodded slowly giving a thoughtful hum,
“It’s a different building from then though…Do you want to study there too?”
“No, I’m going to be a writer!” Jun answered his chest puffing out proudly and Sho watched him in mild worry while Shoko’s head bobbed up and down frantically and Sho wondered if her face ever ached from grinning so much. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and perhaps Jun and hug them tightly, they were perfect little children and he knew that that that was a 100% Masaki. They both had frankly academic dreams and hopes for the future but they were going to be having fun while they did it.
“See…My little geniuses…” Masaki said proudly from his chair and Sho smiled and gave a nod while Nino clicked his tongue with mock disappointment;
“Well for a pair of nerds neither of them are any good at video games, such a disappointment…”
“Don’t worry, my love,” Satoshi chuckled from his spot in the corner his voice radiating all of his love for his bratty husband. He walked over to him slowly and placed his hand on the very swollen stomach stroking it lightly with just his fingertips “I promise that you can corrupt our daughter with as many video games as you want…”
“As is right since I’m the one carrying the bugger…But watch her become a passive little dreamer like her papa…” Nino sighed as he rested his head on his chest his eyes closing “She barely kicks at all, so she can’t take after me…”
“Well we can always try again…” Ohno purred lightly and Nino let out a snort of laughter his eyes opening again and Sho was surprised to see how much love he had in them for his husband. Nino had always been a bit of a player when they were younger, he’d had a string of lovers both male and female and never seemed to take any of them seriously and Sho had to admit to feeling respect for the man that had gotten him to settle down.
“Yeah…Only if you carry it…” Nino muttered slowly getting to his feet and squeezing his hand “Come on…We should get going home…I’m sure that Masaki and the sensei have lots to talk about…”
“Yeah...” Ohno nodded before going to collect their coats. Nino hugged his friend and then kissed Shoko who was once again flicking through the book that Sho noticed at dozens of sticky notes stuck to various pages.
“Bye-bye, Uncle Nino” She said in an almost distracted way nuzzling back into Sho’s chest. The doctor didn’t know if she was this trusting with everybody but he decided to take pride in the fact that she seemed to be content on his lap. He could hear the beating of her heart through her back and he found it comfortingly warm.
“Bye-bye, princess I’m glad you’re okay…” Nino whispered his lips brushing over Jun’s forehead. The boy’s face was immediately went red and he squirmed around on the sofa. Sho gave a chuckle and then nodded when Nino turned to look at him “It was nice to see you again, sensei, I guess I’ll see you again soon…”
“I guess you will, it’s a small town…” Sho mumbled a blush forming on his own cheeks under the strong gaze and Nino’s lips twitched a little as he nodded;
“Yeah, I guess…” He gave a wink and then allowed his husband to help him into his coat Ohno gave him a brisk nod and then the pair left leaving him alone with Masaki and the children.
Sho expected the air to crackle with silence but with Shoko and Jun, who was more talkative without Nino, it was impossible. The children told him more than Masaki had, telling him that their daddy was so amazing that he had three jobs, which included working mornings on a checkout, afternoons in the towns only library and Sunday nights cleaning the swimming pool.
Uncles Nino and Satoshi looked after them on the weekends and once when they were four daddy married uncle Nino. Masaki had blushed throughout the whole conversation barely saying anything but he made a funny noise when they got to the wedding. It matched the noise that Sho made almost perfectly and they were both surprised their eyes meeting over the tops of the children's heads. At eight fifteen exactly the children made their way to bed and then the silence he'd feared started.
Sho needlessly checked his watch and then awkwardly rose to his feet fumbling around for something to say.
"...it was for insurance...and I..." Masaki said suddenly as he too got to his feet. Sho frowned in confusion and the younger man laughed a little nervously his fingers going through his hair "Junny got sick. It was when we found out about his asthma...I couldn't pay, I also started to get sick…Nino asked me to marry him so we could be put on his insurance...he adopted the children...It worked out fine until he fell in love...we got divorced two years ago..."
"I see..." Sho murmured feeling a rush of gratitude to the man that he'd been barely able to stand when they were younger. "He's helped you a lot then..."
"He was incredible...Satoshi is too..."
"He'd have to be to put up with Nino..." Sho joked weakly his heart pounding against his ribs as he stared in to the tired but beautiful face "Um so you...did you ever fall in love?"
