Matsumoto-Ninomiya Kazuko moved around the dance floor her eyes shining with happiness as she moved against the men that were dancing with her. Her husband Jun watched from the bar his eyes on her face his heart thumping around in his chest in a way that it hadn’t done in years, since the first day that he had met her in fact. 17 years of marriage, a mortgage, two kids and a dog had dulled that feeling but only now could he see that that was a mistake. They’d had an argument earlier, just one of the many they’d had in the last few months, or years if he wasn’t lying to himself, he honestly hadn’t been able to see how they were going to stay together. He was positive that the spark had gone that she had changed since those early days. The quick witted, sarcastic brat that he had fallen in love with had become a domesticated doll that only thought of the children.
Nino swirled as she was spun out from her dance partner Ohno Satoshi, Jun recognised the man as being the boss of his floor and he almost growled when he saw that there was more than a polite interest in his wife. But he couldn’t blame him, she looked like an elfin goddess in the deep red dress that seemed to shine like diamonds under the lights. Her hair, still a rich black splayed down her back and Jun was shocked to see that there were highlights in hair. It was something that he had never seen before that and the way that they seemed to match the unique colour of her eyes and made them pop and stand out. Ohno whispered something to her and Kazuko gave a laugh that caused an ache to flood into Jun’s heart. It had been so long since he had since that smile and it wasn’t just her fault, he hadn’t given her much reason to smile recently.
The song ended but instead of coming back to him Kazuko was pulled into the arms of another man, Aiba Masaki who began to pull her around in an enthusiastic jig. It wasn’t as graceful as the dance with Ohno had been but it was quick and fun causing Kazuko’s cheeks to flush brightly and her chest to heave under the dress. Her eyes sparkled with the same mischief as they had all those years ago and her thin mouth was pulled back into a wide grin. The dress shimmered as she moved and Jun knew that he was as captivated now as he was 18 years ago. Guilt flooded through his body as he thought about all the late nights that he had volunteered for, not wanting to be in the house and having to listen to her sorting out the children or the housework. She hadn’t changed because she wanted to, he could see that now. The reason that she focused on the children was because they were the only ones that focused on her.
Jun fidgeted as that song ended and yet another guy, one that he wasn’t sure he recognised walked over to his wife and pulled her into a fumbling movement that Jun wasn’t even could be called a dance. But no matter what it was Jun thought that Nino looked good. Her body still trim and flexible even after the children and Jun wondered how long it had been since he had felt her pressed up against him or had her hands in his own. She had tiny hands, small and a little meaty for a woman but Jun loved the way that they felt, they were so small. He could remember the way that they had first felt against his. He’d always promised that he would treasure the trust that she had placed in him.
It wasn’t all his fault, he knew that, they both had fiery tempers and they’d always had spark filled relationship. But fiery almost loving arguments had become hateful and sarcastic and now he realised that it was because they had lost the spark they’d had. His eyes moved over the lithe figure of his wife his heart leapt and jumped when Kazuko turned and flashed him a smile. There was a knowing and teasing look in her face and with a growl he grabbed the beer that he’d been drinking tightly. He gulped it back and then slammed it down onto the bar, not caring when a few droplets splashed out and coated his hand, he took a deep breath and then stalked over the floor his eyes fixed on the swirling figures. The tempo of the music was louder now and moved up through his feet. His tongue dragged over his lips and then he tapped on his wife’s partner’s shoulder.
“Do you mind if I dance with my wife?” He asked softly as the pair came to a stop. Kazuko was breathless but still smiling, in fact there was a glow in her cheeks that he had never seen before.
“Um…Yes…Yes of course…” The man said letting go of Kazuko quickly and then bustled off leaving them alone. They looked at each other sheepishly for a minute and Jun’s hand moved up and the back of his neck and then he grinned a little biting on his bottom lip before asked;
“Can I have this dance?”
“I thought you’d never ask…” Kazuko smiled holding out her small hand and Jun gripped it tightly linking their fingers as her other hand came up to rest on his shoulder. His hand slipped around his waist and he pulled her into his body slowly swaying her from side to side. It felt amazing, like the first time that they had been together, her body moulded against him and he could fell the fluttering of her heartbeat and he realised that it matched the rhythm of his own. For some reason tears came to his eyes and he sagged his cheek pressing against hers.
“You look…Amazing…” He whispered his voice hoarse, a lump in his throat. Kazuko gave a smile silently wrapping one of her arms around his stomach “I’m sorry Kazu’…”
“Shut up and keep dancing…” Nino chuckled her head resting on his chest. Jun wanted to say more to tell her that no matter what happened he would never forget the way that she was looking right now, that from tomorrow she would see a different side to him. It wouldn’t be easy but there was no way that he was going to give her up. They moved around the floor swaying to the music their bodies moving together in a perfect symmetry that none of the others had. Jun let out a long sigh his eyes closing as he felt a slow steady trickle of tears move down his cheeks. Yes things were definitely going to be different tomorrow.

A/N: I hope that this is okay…This is based on one of my favourite love songs Lady in Red by Chris de burgh. I watched an interview once that said he wrote it after an argument with his wife which I've always though is incredibly beautiful. Since I've been listening to it non-stop for a few days my brain came up with this here's a link to the video if anyone is interested; http://vimeo.com/m/42374677
