Lord Ohno's Home part 39
Five months later
Nino laughed as he watched Satoru and Hotaru darted through the crowds of people. They didn’t move too far away but it was a far cry from the nervous attitudes that his children had shown when they had first come to the market. Today they were here for the festival like his lover had promised and Nino couldn’t believe all the bright colours, sounds and smells that were surrounding him. The five months had been hard work for all of them, they had worked hard to get where they were now. Satoru had formed a bound with Kyou. Since the funeral he had spent every other day with the woman helping her through her depression while at the same time managing his own. It wasn’t long until Nino had his sweet, innocent little boy back. There were days when he and his lord would wake to find a small body laying over their feet or curled up in between them but mostly he was learning to stand on his own again.
“Mama!” Satoru shouted and Nino smiled waving his hand to show that he was watching. The boy waved holding up something and Nino gave a small head shake wondering how much the item was going to cost. His lord had given him some coins but he didn’t want to spend them all, his lord was far too generous with his money. There were a few startled expressions as he walked over to the sound of the call of Mama, but no matter what they said Satoru refused point blank to call him papa.
“What is it?” Nino asked his face lighting up as he saw item in his son’s hand. It was a wooden figure of a woman, her face was tilted down and the painted expression on her face was mixed with tenderness as she looked down at the boy that was standing beside her.
“I think that we should get it for Aunty Kyou...” Satoru said thoughtfully his head tilting to one side. Nino was startled for a moment he too had gotten close to the stone masons wife and he knew that she would love the gift. Most people ignored the fact that she had had a son, and those that didn’t always spoke of him as if he had been a monster from a children’s story. Nino still had no love for the brat that had first tried to seduce his lover and then kill him but, as a parent, he could understand Kyou’s point of view “I promised I would get her a gift...May I?”
“I think that she would like that...” He answered with a smile looking at the seller who was looking raptured that ‘Lord Ninomiya-Ohno’ was buying from his stall. That was something that he had surprised him the moment he and his family had come out into the market people seemed to know who they were and most gave them a wide ring, though that might have more to do with the guards that Ohno insisted follow them. Hotaru was the future empress of Japan, her engagement to Haruma had been approved by his father, but most seemed more terrified of Lord Ohno than the wraith of the emperor. It was confusing at first but then Nino had heard the stories that were traveling around. The stories of Saito and what had happened in the cave had been exaggerated as had the story of Iwao, Ohno’s reputation had become even more ferocious but at the same time it had become more of a romantic tale.
“My son would like to purchase the figure...”
“Yes, my lord, of course...You would not wish to carry it around...I will have it sent to the palace, my lord...” The store owner simpered bowing and fawning all of him as he placed the figure in a lacquered engraved box that looked almost more expensive than the figurine. “If there anything else that I may help you with...”
“We will be back later...” Nino smiled taking his coin purse from his robes aware that the guard around him stiffened his hand on his sword. A small group of people startled and hurried away.
“Stop thief!” A voice shouted and Nino spun around just in time to see the head of a very thin, very dirty boy with runny eyes running passed him with what looked like a fish in his hands. Nino stuffed coins into the man’s sweaty hands and then grabbed a hold of Satoru’s running after the boy and the guards that were chasing him. The punishment for theft was death and from the small glimpse that he had had of the boy, death might be a blessing but he was not about to let his son witness another. The boy ran down a small ally way that Nino realised backed onto the Garden section of the palace. The guards were circling as the boy coward against the wall. He was shaking hugging the rather rotten looking fish to his thin chest his eyes darting around.
“What is happening here?” Nino asked softly letting go of Satoru’s hand and stepping forward. His eyes were on the body who looked close to fainting. He had to be at least 3 years younger than Satoru, his hair mattered with something that looked closely like horse manure and his face was white and his eyes deeply shadowed.
“It doesn’t concern you...Be about your way...”
“You will keep a civil tongue in your head when you address my lord Ninomiya...” One of the guards that was tailing him said softly his hand on his sword faster than anything and the guards jolted turning softly
“Sorry my lord, I didn’t see you...” The guard muttered and Nino smiled coldly his eyes not moving from the boy. He was about to throw up and was swaying dangerously from side to side the fish losing its place in his arms “The boy’s thief...”
“The boy is half dead...” Nino growled his ‘Maternal’ instinct taking over and he moved forward catching the much too thin body propping him against him. The boy tried to fight but he was too weak and in the end he just flopped against him groaning softly “I will pay for the fish...”
“My lord, the boy is nothing but an ally rat...You let him go now he will be back again later...It’s best for us all to cut the head off before he causes more problems...”
“Talk that way again and you will be meeting the blade of my lover...” Nino spat worried about the way the boy was jerking against him. His eyes were fluttering frantically under his lids and his mouth was open into an almost pant.
“My lord” The guard said standing to attention the rest of his men following suit.
“Satoru, come here... Take my coin purse and give two to the nice men...” Nino said and his son came forward doing as he was told. “Yui...Go to the palace and tell my brother and Masaki that we are bringing him a patient, Ryu tell Hotaru where we have gone...” Nino ordered scooping the boy too him trying to not recoil too much at the smell or the feel of the clothing. He felt greasy and like he was covered in grit. When he picked him up the fish fell from his hands and he gave a small cry of protest confirming Nino’s earlier suspicion that there were at least three broken bones. “I am sorry little man I promise that you will feel better soon...” Nino whispered carrying him through the alley ways towards a gate that few people knew about. The guard on the gate took one look at the strange party and unlocked the small door quickly allowing them entrance.
The way through the garden to the main part of the palace was long made longer by the fact that every now and then the boy would fight against him and almost fell out of his hands. By the time they had reached main part of the palace Sakurai, Aiba and his lord was waiting for them. Ohno lifted up an eyebrow a smile tugging at his lips as he said
“Only you would go to a market and come back with another child, my love...”
