The Siren's song part 20

It was midmorning and they were sat in the new refurbished sitting room making strained small talk while drinking the gift of the sirens. It was strangely peaceful though Nino knew that wouldn’t last for long and even before the doorbell rang Jun was alert, purple scales forming around his narrowed eyes and Nino flinched as he gripped his arm tightly, in the chair by the fire Satoshi caught the action and his eyes narrowed sharply and he continued to glare until Jun realised what he was doing and pulled his hand away.

“J…” Nino murmured and the siren flopped to his knees in front of him looking at him with an apology in his eyes.

“I apologise…” He said his song soft, hesitant as it reached out to him and Nino gave a laugh humming as he reached out his hand and touched the harden scale with his fingertips until it vanished becoming soft skin again. Nino wanted to kiss his lover but the fact that his brother was sitting in the room prevented him and he settled for squeezing his hand as Jun swept to his feet as the doorbell rang “I believe the first applicant is here…A siren… A woman…Mr Ninomiya you might wish to leave…”

“Why?” Satoshi grumbled as Jun flicked his eyes to him and Nino bit back a sigh wondering why his brother had to be so headstrong sometimes and why he seemed to be resisting every single attempt Jun made to be nice. Although Nino didn’t understand all of it he knew that a female siren could affect his brother in the same way Jun affected him and Jun was just trying to give him an out.

“My song does not affect you…but hers will and unless you wish to tempt her singing and maybe having a murder on your hands…” Jun was half joking, Nino could see that but he didn’t think that it was appropriate given his brother’s misgivings about their relationship and he knew that if anything was going to make Satoshi stay that was it. Seriously both his lover and his brother were headstrong fools, one day they would wake up and realise how alike they were and then they would be friends he just knew it and he couldn’t wait for that day to arrive.

“I will stay…I won’t tempt her or whatever, but I’m not leaving…” Satoshi said crossing his arms over his chest and trying to make his body appear as small as he possibly could. Nino rolled his eyes at his brother’s antics but felt glad of his presence as Jun nodded his head and went to answer the door as the bell rang again. “He hurt you…”

“He was tense and it didn’t even hurt that much…Satoshi you have to understand that this is hard for him, I don’t understand it much but their instincts are stronger than ours and all of Jun’s are focused on protecting me and our kits allowing people into our home must be close to a nightmare for him…” Nino whispered his eyes flicking to the door and then back to his brother who had started sulking a little. “Please…It wasn’t intentional…”

“Kazu…I hope you really do understand what you’re doing…” Satoshi sighed as the door opened to reveal Jun who was still looking tense though the muscles in his face had relaxed just a little. He took a step away from the door and motioned in a young woman causing both Ninomiya’s to rise to their feet. They might have been a poor family growing up but they had been taught their manners.

The woman was beautiful, though that was to be expected, she had light coppery coloured hair, which was tied loosely and then covered with a simple lace, with almost grey eyes that shone with a warmth that Nino felt in the very put if his stomach and when she smiled the glow grew. Her cheeks were rounded giving her face an oval quality and her lips were shaped like a love heart and a perfect rosy pink colour. There was a deep dimple in her cheek and a mole just under her left eye. She stepped in front of Nino and dipped into a curtsy so low she was almost sitting on the floor a light grey dress fanning out around her like a mini ocean. The clothes were serviceable but not the best quality and Nino wondered why she had not done what Jun had and taken the gold from the ocean and as he was reading his mind the male siren caught his eye and shook his head motioning that they would talk about it later.

“Nice to meet you…Um…”

"Rosa Luckett, I am honoured to meet you sire," she whispered and Nino could feel the hesitant song reaching out hopefully to him. When he gave no response it fell away and a look of disappointment crossed over her beautiful face "I am sorry... I suppose that I am not suited..."

"What no I..." Nino gasped knowing that he had done something wrong he looked at his mate for help.

"My mate is still unused to our customs..." Jun said almost tersely from his spot by the window and Rosa's song flared again lifting in hope and Nino gave a hopeless hum hoping that would please her, apparently it did as she hummed audibly her song floating around the room. It was completely different from Jun’s or their kits, still beautiful but it didn’t call to him in any way that would be considered sexual and he let out another hum that died away when Satoshi gave a funny squeak from his chair. Turning to look at him Nino saw to, both, his horror and amusement that his brother’s face was sweaty, his eyes wide and his mouth opening and closing like a hungry bird as he thrashed around in his chair.

Rosa’s face coloured and her song died away as she tried to lower herself even further the floor apologising quickly as Satoshi recovered wiping his face with a handkerchief and looking horrified at his actions. Nino felt like teasing him but since he had jumped over board at the sound of his mate’s song he felt like he didn’t have the right to give his brother a pointed look.

“I am sorry sire…I…I did not realise…” Rosa whispered apologetically and Nino tilted his head motioning for her to continue with a hand gesture,

“Realise?”

“…Yes your companion, if didn’t realise that he was a human…He feels so much like the sea that I mistook him for another siren…” She said and Nino stared at Jun who gave a shrug

“I suppose…I’ve never noticed it myself but I know the truth…So I wouldn’t but he does feel part siren...You have worked on the ocean since you were a small boy, it is possible that for one away from a shoal for so long could mistake that for being…From the ocean…” He answered and Nino seemed to think that fit, their parents had always said that Satoshi was more fish than man and he was never happier than when he was on his boats. It was strange that out of the two of them he was the one that had ended up mated with a siren

“I have been away from the ocean a long time sire, and I could have been mistaken but…It is more than you working on the ocean…You truly love it and feel connected too it…” Rosa purred and Nino sensed another song starting, this one wasn’t a seductive one or a submissive one it was just a happy song and even Satoshi cracked a smile as he gripped his arm rests.

“If you have been without a shoal for so long why do you feel the need to be in one now? How did you come to leave your first matriarch?”
