“You are extremely close to your friend, Masaki, aren’t you?” Satoshi asked Nino later as they lay wrapped around each other on the sofa. Their bodies were glistening with the after sweat of sex and Satoshi’s fingers were brushing up and down the vampire’s pale arm. Nino’s declaration that Masaki was his idiot was fresh in his mind and for some reason Satoshi couldn’t quite shake off the pang of jealousy that he felt as he thought about the beautiful man he had seen in the office who was a much better fit than he was.
“Are you jealous? There is no reason...Masaki is my best friend and I love him dearly but...He’s an idiot...” Nino chuckled pressing a kiss to his shoulder. “Growing up I wasn’t allowed friends...I wasn’t even allowed a pet. People around me knew that I was the heir, that I had the mark of the king...They were afraid of me...Or perhaps they were afraid of my father. They wouldn’t look me in the eye, much less talk to me, and then one day...About 70 years ago. I met Aiba Masaki. He breezed into my life like a whirlwind...”

Nino stared out at the streets below his window with a somewhat bored expression on his face. He heard that the war had changed much of the city around him but he didn’t know. He hadn’t been allowed to leave the house of his father. From his cage he thought that life moved on in much the same way as it always did. There were a few more solders now a lot more English being spoken. The wars of the humans normally didn’t affect the vampires but this war had been a threat to them all. His father had played all sides and now the British and Americans were grateful for all that he had done. Nino had hated watching him smarm and grease his way into every position of power he could fit his snaky body into but at the same time he had to begrudgingly admire the way that the Matsumoto’s were the only wealthy family in Japan that hadn’t been touched by the downfall of the economy.
The man wasn’t here, he had travelled to America a week ago, and Nino hoped and prayed that he wouldn’t return. Of course, he knew that he would but nobody could blame him for wishing ill on his father. At times like this though he half thought about allowing himself to bleed out. It was hard to kill a vampire, even harder for one to commit suicide but there were ways. The easiest would be to cut all of the major veins in his body and have a dip in the hot spring. The warm water would allow his blood to flow.
Movement outside his prison forced his mind to snap together thought of his own suicide leaving him. It was only then that he realised he had been almost clawing at his wrists. The door to his study was thrown open and a tall, unfamiliar vampire came stalking in. His limbs were long poking out of the hems of ragged clothing. His hair was unkempt and his face dirty but for some reason he was smiling and walking as though he didn’t have a care in the world. A butler and security guard tried to grab at him but Nino held up his hand to stop them asking in a confused voice;
“Hello? What reason do you have to disturb me?”
“Sorry! I... I want a job” His intruder answered brightly almost skipping over to the window he had been staring out. Nino’s mouth fell open to form a perfect O of surprise and he blinked slowly.
“A job? You look like a street urchin...”
“I was, Sho...The vampire father...He told me to come here and ask...The Matsumoto’s are the only ones hiring at the moment because you are the only ones with any money cause of the war and the fact that you had your fingers in a lot of pies and stuff. So, I want a job” he grinned flashing white teeth and radiating a calm happy feeling out of his body. Nino had never met such a friendly and out spoken vampire before and he couldn’t help but ask;
“Don’t you know who I am?”
“The person who will hopefully give me a job. Please, I really need one...Look at know that you’re Matsumoto-Ninomiya Kazunari future king or whatever, you’ve got the birthmark right? I got one too on my shoulder...” The taller vampire answered with a lazy shrug and Nino felt the oxygen get knocked out of lungs. Nobody had ever spoken about his mark so casually before.
“And if I could give you a job, what could you do?”
“Anything you wanted. I have a lot of skills, Sho taught me how to read and write, I’m a quick learner...” The man said brightly puffing out his chest and Nino frowned trying to remember who Sho was and then it hit him. Sakurai Sho. Heir of the Sakurai family. The Sakurai’s had once been his father’s right hand family, they had been through a lot together but then Sho had decided that he wanted the church life. Nino didn’t know him except in passing but the last he had heard he had set up a small school to teach the children of vampires displaced by the war.
“I would have thought that he would have given you a bath and new clothes before sending you here to beg for a job...”
“He did, but I saw some solders harassing a girl on the street so I got into a little bit of a fight...” The stranger said without a trace of embarrassment as he scratched the back of his neck.
“So, you’re a trouble maker as well as an idiot?”
“Um...I like to think of it as more of a hero rather than troublemaker...So can I have a job?” The man gave him a winning grin wiggling around thick unruly eyebrows and flashing his teeth. He clearly looked as though he was thoroughly expecting him to say yes and Nino had the oddest feeling that he would.
“I don’t even know who the hell you are”
“Ah! Sorry! I haven’t introduced myself! I’m Aiba Masaki! Pleased to meet you, so I can have the job right?”
+Present day+
Nino let out a laugh rubbing his nose against him while Satoshi had to get over the fact that Nino had talked about the second world war to casually as part of his story. He couldn’t even imagine that point of time when he had been studying history at school.
“I gave him a job...and he became my friend...” Nino informed him “I have no other choice. When my father came home he tried to get rid of him. He did everything he could think of but Masaki stayed. He wasn’t afraid. He really is an idiot, but he is my idiot...And if somebody even thinks about hurting him I will prove to them why I am fit to be the king of the vampires....”
