“Mum why is my ex-b-Best friend spending Christmas with us?” Ninomiya ‘Nino’ Kazunari asked with a hissed as he and his mother shelled peas into a large bowl. There was a festive looking elf’s hat on his mothers head and large dangly gingerbread men earrings hang from her lobes swinging to and fro as she sang along to the songs that played on the TV. Most of them, in fact almost all, were in English but they had been played enough times in their house for Nino to know what was being sang. Even when he was a child and hadn’t understood it, he known the words. Kazuko, his mother had been an orphan at three years old and had been adopted by a loving English couple who had been unable to have a child of their own, for most her life Kazuko had been raised in England with her parents trying their best to keep her connected to her Japanese roots. She had met his father in college, a Japanese studying in England and they had instantly clicked. They had married and moved to japan to have theìr two children. Kazuko smiled brightly popping on of the peas into her mouth and eating it quickly before answering him.
“If you called or came by more often you would know. Jun-kun has been boarding here for the last six months...” She said before motioning for him to continue his work with the peas. Nino swallowed slowly for a moment before looking to the living room where Jun was hanging lights with his sister. There was a door and a corridor in between them but Nino had always been able to sense Jun. He had been more than his best friend. He had been his lover, the one person other than his mum that he had known he could trust completely, and then they had fizzled out into nothing. Nino had gone away to study Drama in England while Jun had attended the local college. When Nino had left he had told him that there was no point in them continuing to date and that things would be better if they never told anybody. He had said that it had been a mistake, their relationship, and Nino had experienced heartbreak.

“Is he dating Nee-chan?” He asked remembering how close his sister and Jun had been acting when he had first arrived home yesterday. The pair had been wrestling in the living room and for Nino it had been like a punch to the gut. His grandparents. His mother’s adopted parents, had come over from England with him and he hadn’t been able to do anything but smile using all the drama skills he had learned.
“C’mon, you should know better than anyone that your best-friend...Isn’t interested in girls...” Kazuko hummed giving him a look that quite plainly stated she saw all and knew all. Nino flushed at the wiggling eyebrows and kept his eyes on the peas glad when his grandmother came in an apron wrapped around her waist. Her hair had been brushed and styled away from her face and Nino grinned glad that she had come at that moment.
“Where do you want me?”
“We’re almost finished with the peas for dinner, do you want to start the mince pies or the cookies...” Kazuko suggested causing Patricia to throw her hands up in mock horror her eyes bulging from behind her horn rimmed glasses as she exclaimed;
“Are you telling me that you haven’t started the mince pies? What about the filling...”
“The filling I’ve done, Mama, it’s in the fridge...” Kazuko chuckled flushing a little as the chubby wrinkled white woman pressed a kiss to her cheek before winking in Nino’s direction. He had often wondered why his mum acted that way around the woman that was her mother and then he’d realised that it wasn’t nerves that made her act that way, it was love and happiness. She had been six years old when they had adopted her and she could remember not having parents. It was touching in its way and it went a great way in explaining why she was such an emotional loving person to him and his sister.
“Yup, almost knocked me out when I opened it earlier...Done...” Nino said throwing the last pea down into the bowl and then getting up from the stool he had been sitting on hoping that his mother would forget about what they had been talking about. Jun. Jun had admitted that he was gay. That was new. The man had been the most in the closet person he had ever known, it had been the reason that they had broken up and he had decided that he would go to England and stay with his grandparents.
“Yeah, yeah, go...But don’t think that our conversation is over, Kazunari...” Kazuko hummed waving the bowl of peas around and Nino rolled his eyes a little and then left before his grandmother could ask what conversation.
His grandpa was in the hall way up a ladder hanging more paper decorations, some that they had brought from England and had been in the family for years. Most had been made by his mother when she was young but some where his and his sisters creations. He could still see their childish finger marks on the paper.
“What do you think?”
“As always it looks like Santa’s workshop” Nino grinned looking around at the tinsel and lights and the almost unhealthy amount of Christmas snowglobes his mother had collected over the years. There were 100’s of them, ranging in sizes and shapes, and all of them had a story attached or a precious memory. Nino helped his grandfather for a moment and then continued to the living room stopping dead when the door opened and Jun came out. To his credit he looked as startled as Nino was and they both flushed brightly when his sister shouted;
“You’re under the mistletoe!”
“What?” Nino shouted looking up just as Jun moved forward to kiss him and Nino was presented with the familiar but lonely feeling of lips pressing against his mole. Jerking his head back he looked up at Jun who gave him a grin his eyes warm and as shiny as any of the baubles and Nino felt his eyes sting with the very unfamiliar feeling of tears before he jerked away and spun of his heel marching to the front door and not looking back. His mind was swirling with a dozen thoughts and his heart was swollen with emotion. It wasn’t fair, coming home and finding the man that had shattered his heart into a million pieces living happily with your mum and sister wasn’t fair but having that same man, the man that he had loved, the man that in spite of everything, kissing him because of some stupid tradition wasn’t fair.
If his mother had told him Jun was going to be there then he wouldn’t have come back. He had friends in England that would have had him over the Christmas season.
“Nino...Nino wait...I’m sorry...”
“Too little too late...Leave me alone...” Nino growled pulling his hand free from Jun’s and pulling his shoes from the shelf. “That was what you wanted right? You wanted me to leave you alone...I did, I left you alone...And then I come back and you’re here in my house, with my mum, and my sister...You’re not fair...You’re completely not fair...”
