TWO PARTS
Prequel to Cat Vs Newspaper
“I’m not lonely” Sakurai Sho said rather unconvincingly as he ate salty bar snacks and drank beer late one night after work. His friend, who had been his friend for so long that Sho thought of him as a brother, Aiba Masaki snorted around his own bottle of beer. The man had recently become engaged to Japan’s sweetheart, Ohno Satomi, and now thought that the entire world should be paired up. Sho was just glad that his friends had given him the exclusive interview and that he had been invited to the wedding to act as best man. “I’m not lonely...I’m not...”
“Yeah, right...That’s what you’re not in a bar on a Friday night all by yourself...”
“I’m not by myself, you’re here aren’t you?”
“Well, yeah...But I will be going home soon to the most beautiful woman on planet earth...While you’ll be going home to...Well...Nothing, you don’t even have a houseplant...” Masaki hummed taking some of the snacks before Sho could eat them all and popping it into his mouth. Sho rolled his eyes having to admit that his friend was right but it was okay...He didn’t spend enough time in his apartment to need a houseplant. As he was about to say so he glanced at the TV and saw himself looking back at him. It was a repeat from a segment he had done earlier about the new line of CAT’s. He hadn’t liked it, he hated being anywhere near the CAT factory but his bosses had insisted.
“Oh! Look at them! Aren’t they really cute?”
“Oh! Look at them! Aren’t they really cute?”
“...Yeah, if you think slaves are cute...” Sho rolled his eyes, his friend had loved the CATs since the first batches had been introduced ten years ago and his obsession with them had only grown. Sho on the other hand was seriously contemplating joining the freedom for CATs movement that was growing strong. It was the only thing they argued on and normally they would avoid the subject completely.
“They’re not slaves, they are pets...”
“They are pretty much human, sure they have a few differences, but they are the same...” Sho grumbled thinking back to earlier and the Lab which might have just been a factory. The CATs were grown in artificial wombs and he had seen them at different stages of their development. “...How many people hurt animals? You think that they wouldn’t hurt the CATs?”
“No! Because CATs are so expensive! Why would you hurt something you pay so much for!? How much are they anyway?” Masaki hummed his voice slurring with the amount of drink that had been consumed as he pulled out his phone and went on to the CAT website. Sho rolled his eyes glad that the segment had finished and it had moved on to sports. “I got it! Oh wow! 60 thousand...”
“Yeah, they are expensive...”
“Yup! Ooh there’s a sale on! Shall we have a look?” Masaki giggled clicking the big red button and Sho scowled. Selling them was bad enough but putting them on sale. That was insulting to everyone. “Aww look at him! He’s so small and cute! He’s a calico! His domestic name is Nino but his registered name is Ninomiya Kazunari...Look isn’t he cute!” Masaki gasped thrusting the phone into his nose so Sho had no other choice but to look. The CAT, was indeed cute...And hostile looking. He was scowling up at the camera with his ears flat to his head and his tail twitching back and forth. Sho was almost positive that if there was sound the CAT would be growling in the back of his throat. He looked murderous and yet...Sho honestly thought he was the cutest CAT he had ever seen and unfortunately he had seen a great many of them. “Aww he’s so cute...I wonder why he’s on sale?”
“I have no idea” Sho said but in reality he suspected that the CAT a wild streak that the creator couldn’t stand. CATs were only deemed perfect when they were submissive after all. Problematic CATs didn’t sell.
“We still haven’t got you a gift for being best man!” Masaki laughed and Sho watched in horror as the man clicked buy now. A form, much like one on a clothing website popped up and Masaki started to fill in his details which was helped by the fact that he had saved all of his personal data. Sho made to grab for the phone but his reaction times were dulled by the drink and all he managed to do was grab at air as Masaki danced around him.
“You are not getting me a CAT...I don’t won’t one! You know how I feel about them...”
“All the more reason to get you one! At least with you he won’t be a slave! You will be saving him!” Masaki giggled his thumbs moving like lightning. “Done! I paid for overnight shipping so he will be here tomorrow afternoon”
“Masaki! You can return it, I don’t want a CAT!”
“Too bad, you’ve got one on the way. I better head home, see ya” Masaki beamed at him and then made his way out of the bar leaving Sho to stare after him with a shocked expression on his face. He hoped that his friend was just playing with him, that he had actually cancelled the order and was just being a jerk in the hopes of being funny. Or maybe...Maybe when he sobered up he would realise what he had done and would send the CAT back. Sho finished his drink and then left the bar hoping against hope that he wouldn’t actually end up with the CAT tomorrow afternoon.
_+_+_+_+
Sho pulled his eyes open and growled loudly under his breath. His head was pounding with the effects of a very bad hangover and the banging on the door didn’t help. He pulled himself up into a seated position and then looked around the room. It was sparsely furnished, in fact the only things that could be counted as decoration were the awards he had on his shelf and even them he hadn’t wanted to put out. His mother had done that for him when she had invaded a few months ago. The knocking continued and then he heard Masaki hyper voice shouting;
“Sho-chan! Let me in!”
“Urgh...What do you want?” Sho huffed getting up from the bed and moving to the door. He half wanted to tell his friend to piss off but he also knew that Masaki wouldn’t leave even being told that.
“Let me in! Why are you still in bed? It’s two in the afternoon!”
“I don’t have work today, anyway you’re not my mother...What the fuck is that?” Sho shouted opening his door and almost slamming it closed again when he saw that Masaki wasn’t alone. A man, shorter than his friend with jet black hair and calico ears and tail was standing just in front of him there was a bag in his hands and a yellow collar around his neck. The CAT looked him over slowly and meowed and Sho suddenly remembered last night and the bar.
“This is Nino! He’s your pet CAT! Say hello to Sho-chan, Nino!”
