“Everything is perfectly fine, Mari-san, both you and baby are doing well at least physically. How are you feeling?” He asked sitting on the edge of the bed sensing that she wanted to talk to him, probably to say some of the same things her husband had done ad he was more than prepared to listen. Regardless if it made him late for his interview with the new doctor.

“It’s nothing really, I just…I guess, I’m just overwhelmed, I can’t sleep, I just keep staring at her” Mari breathed softly through her nose looking down at the bundle in her arms and Nino smiled taking her free hand so that he could squeeze it tightly.

“Everyone thinks that way. It’s perfectly natural you’ve just had a tiny little human come out of you. Even if you’ve been looking forward to the birth the reality of it can be very daunting” He said with his best gentle smile while Mari screwed up her face her nose wrinkling as she muttered;

“My mother in law doesn’t think so. She said that she was fine”

“I’m sure she was, but you’re not and there is no reason to be ashamed of it. You had a difficult and painful birth. You handled it amazingly but you should allow yourself time to adjust into this. There is no right way or wrong way to deal with a baby, what works for one won’t work for another and as for watching her. I can understand that, I’m sure that it doesn’t feel real for you yet” Nino gave her another smile as she squeezed at his hand whispering;

“I’m glad it was you”

“Huh?”

“That came last night, I know that most people want a woman but…I was hoping that it would be you, the other two scare me a little bit” She whispered in a very hushed whisper as though she were afraid that they could hear her and Nino chuckled and squeezed her hand glad that he had stood his ground earlier.

“I’m happy that it was me to” He said honestly before standing up and smoothing out his uniform “I’ll come back a little later and we can have another chat if you’d like?”

“Yes, please, though I know I’m just being silly”

“If it’s worrying you it’s not silly. I’ll come around at about 6, all being well” He packed up his bag slowly not wanting it to look as though he was desperate to leave and Mari asked;

“You have other people to see?”

“Not yet, I have a meeting at the hospital with the new head of staff. I’m terrified” He admitted with a wan smile. He supposed that in some way he was lingering here on purpose so he wouldn’t have to go and have his meeting. “The new doctor is from somewhere in Tokyo. Apparently, he was a big shot or something”

“I wonder why he came here?” Mari hummed slowly and Nino gave a shrug and a sigh saying;

“I’m not sure but I do know that he has the power to fire me so I suppose I better go see what he wants. I’ll see you both later and remember if you have any problems at all just call and I’ll come as soon as I can” He gave her a cheerful wave and then headed out of the house ignoring the looks from what he assumed was the mother in law. The sun was shining almost too brightly as he climbed on his bike and headed towards the hospital.

The building was only slightly larger than the Matsumoto house with a grand garden all the way around it as well as parking. There weren’t many cars in the spaces though and Nino’s eyes were automatically drawn to a sleek black car next to the ramp. It wasn’t one that he had seen before and he cringed knowing that it had to belong to the doctor. Sighing he smoothed himself down and walked towards the door surprised when it was thrown open and a man, almost the same height as him with cropped dyed hair walked out. He looked him over for a minute and then smiled saying brightly;

“Ninomiya Kazunari? Ohno Satoshi, pleased to meet you”
