Satoshi frowned as he walked to the temple. It had already been three hours and his mate still hadn’t returned. He knew that Nino had been reluctant to even see the man in the first place and, from what he knew of the old man, he doubted that Nino would enjoy the man’s company for any longer than it took for him to tell him his news. Of course the monks and priests of the temple already knew as he had sent Masaki before. The temple seemed as serene as ever as he stepped inside removing his shoes before touching the mat and the priest inside jumped to a strange sort of attention his tongue lapping nervously at his cracked and dry lower lip. The priests and monks of Arashi mountain had served them faithfully for many years and he had no doubt that they still did and he was smiling as he asked;

“Have you seen my bonded? He said that he was coming here…”

“He did, my lord…We spoke for a short time and then he left…I was feeling tired…” The priest whispered looking more nervous than ever but Satoshi could only feel truth radiating off of him and he smiled a little more stiffly than was required and bowed his head at the priest.

“…I suppose that I may have missed him in the village…I will go back and check…” He half lied making his escape out of the temple his uneasiness growing. The village wasn’t large enough for him to have simply missed him. In fact, it wasn’t large enough for somebody to sneeze without the whole place hearing it and there was definitely no way that he would have missed him. He wondered for a moment if Nino had decided to make a run for it himself. He didn’t think so but he couldn’t read his mates mind. This time they had spent alone together had been beyond nice and he truly thought they had made a connection but it was completely possible that Nino had been playing him to get him to let his guard down. He chewed his lip wishing that he could just transform, it would be easier that way he could see and feel so much more in his lion form but there were still people around staring at him with somewhat curious eyes. No matter how much he did for the village and the monks in the temples he was always going to be seen as an outcast. Of course the people of the village didn’t know that they were the reason that they hadn’t starved, that their water was clean and good. The village was like an oasis because of him and his pride.

“…My lord…” The priest said hobbling towards him as quickly as his legs could carry him his hand around a long staff of wood that was almost as croaked as his spine. “I will talk to the villagers…You should search the woods…”

“…You know something old man?”

“…A few days ago I came back to find the door to the temple open…It is not strange…The villagers they come and give offerings…Sometimes they prefer to say their prayers when I’m absent…” The man told him and Satoshi gave a nod trying not to show that his patience was already starting to wear thin. “Earlier that day I had been updating the records. The ink had yet to dry when I went for my walk…I saw no harm in it…The people of the village cannot read…Yet I remember seeing two men that I had never seen before…”

“You think that they read your records…”

“I am saying that it is possible, my lord…I am sorry for breaking your confidence…”

“…Even if you saw these men how can you be sure that they could read? Or that they would be able to believe what they saw as fact?”

“I…I cannot answer your questions my lord…These men did not seem to be the sort that were simple travellers…They had equipment with them that I have never seen on pilgrims…” The priest sighed and Satoshi gave a reluctant nod knowing if what the priest said was true then that could only mean one thing. Hunters.

Hunters were rare. Few people believed in the were-creatures…Less and less every year but there were those that were obsessed with proving themselves right and they would stop at nothing to get a creature and force it to expose itself. Nino would be a prime target. He was young and still unstable. If he was scared or confused…Or maybe both then his lion wold rear up and that was the last thing that they needed. Of course they wouldn’t expose him here…A spit of a village in the middle of nowhere would be the last place they would release him. They would take him to the nearest largest town which was five hours away by road. They already had three hours on him. Thankfully though he wouldn’t be travelling by the road and he could easily catch up with him.

“We’ll talk about your carelessness later…For now I want to get my bonded back…”
