Nino closed his eyes as once again he moved his fingers over the keys one at a time creating the music for his solo. It was harder than just playing that had already been created and no matter who hard he tried the notes just didn’t seem to flow right sounding harsh to his ear. His eyebrows wrinkled together as he chewed on his tongue. He was about to try a different combination when his phone rang and slowly he picked it up from the stool beside him and smiled as he saw that it was Satoshi. He quickly answered it with a press of his thumb and held it to his ear his heart skipping a little when he heard the soft hiss of his boyfriend’s breath against his ear as he whispered;
“Hell…Hello? Satoshi?”
“Hey, Nino…Are you okay…I’m not interrupting you am I?” Satoshi asked and Nino looked down at his unfinished or rather non-started music sheet and then covered it with the Beethoven music sheet as he shook his head saying;
“N-No…I’m just working on some stuff for school…What about you?”
“Fixing a carburettor…It would be easier to just buy a new one but the owner insists that I make do…” The mechanic moaned and Nino chuckled trying to remember what a carburettor was. In the end he just gave up and muttered;
“I’ll pretend to know what that is…”
“I thought you were a genius or something…”
“…You can’t really measure genius…” Nino said quoting what his teacher had told both Jun and his parents when he had been justifying the school’s reasons for separating them into different classes. It had been mortifying for both him and Jun to find out that they were working at different levels but Nino knew that it was because he had the time that Jun didn’t have to study. Jun was better at sports than he ever was being in most of the school teams while he wasn’t even allowed to play baseball like he used to. “I have a high IQ but most people think that that means I’m good at taking tests…I’m good at what I know about and what I can read in a book…Cars and bikes…I know nothing about them except what colours I like…” He gave a nervous chuckle hoping that Satoshi wouldn’t think he was stupid or something “Somebody once said…Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid…”
“…I see…I like that quote…” Satoshi chuckled and Nino relaxed again on hearing that sound. It was such a pleasant sound as though it was coming from deep within Satoshi’s throat and he was here with him. Flushing a little he tried to focus on the conversation and not his strange thoughts.
“Me too…I say it to Masaki all the time when he thinks he’s stupid…Um…So you need to fix the carburettor…Am I disturbing you…?”
“I’m the one that called you…I told my uncle about you…I mean I sort of had to as your friend Sho came to see me…”
“…What…Huh…Why…Um…You…” Nino spluttered not completely sure what he was trying to say. He wanted to know what Satoshi’s uncle thought but he was also curious as to why Sho had gone to see him.
“…My uncle was cool about it…I mean more so than I ever thought he would be and he would like to meet you one day…” Satoshi told him gently and Nino swallowed nervously “…I mean when you’re ready and Sempai came to see me to apologise for his attitude and to give me his card…Don’t worry…It was fine…So what are you working on?”
“A song…”
“A song? You’re writing a song?”
“Trying to but I can’t get it right…If…If I play you this section could you tell me what you think?” He asked putting the phone onto speaker hoping that a fresh pair of ears would help him figure out where he was going wrong.
“Sure…Though I’m not really an expert…”
“I just need a second opinion…”
