Sho gasped in surprise as he saw desperate childlike writing on the page in front of him. It was written in a shaky and unskilled hand but each were declaring proudly ‘My name is Aiba Masaki I am 20 years old…’ All looked as though Masaki had never even held a pencil before. All of the letters seemed to have been curved into the page and Sho could almost imagine his grandfather standing behind the younger man telling him to hold it more gently and to concentrate on the words in the same way they had taught him when he was only 5 years old. He had no idea how a man of 20 had gone through his life not knowing how to write his name but it appeared that his grandfather had been able to teach him as evidenced by the sticky notes which now decorated his paperwork. Flipping through the rest of the book he smiled a little at the familiar sentences his heart doing the strange flips that it did whenever he saw awkward writing and misspelled words. It was something that always touched him when watching movies and dramas and to see it in real life really turned his heart around.
He took the cup of coffee and sipped it lightly moving to the next book seeing that it was a little more confident and flowing here though there were still spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that would have been caught by most adults but Masaki had let slip. Red pen marks swirled the errors with corrections written in the margins and Sho’s smile got even wider as if he couldn’t help it, loving the lazy way that Masaki had drawn caricatures of his grandfather in the margins as well as pictures of their dog and cat.
He became lost in reading through the books realising later that he was also assigned essays writing about the holidays that they had taken. Sho didn’t want to read them not wanting to know about his grandfather getting sunstroke or ill because he had eaten too much ice cream but the way that they were written made it impossible for him to stop until it came to the last book where it started to deal with the truth of Shu’s illness and the lack of hope the doctors had in his recovery. Sho slammed that book closed and pushed it back into the drawer the other’s following soon after as he realised that he had spent an hour getting to know more about Masaki than he’d ever wanted to know.
“Fuck it…” He growled sharply kicking out at the leg of the table and almost spilling the cooled coffee over his paper work. Swearing again he took some paper wipes and cleared up the mess before walking to the door.

Masaki frowned a little as he looked at the closed door of the office. It had been an hour since Sho had first entered the room and he was biting hard on his lip wondering if he should ask if he was okay. He doubted if Sho would appreciate his interference it seemed that no matter what he did he Sho found disapproval in it. Taking a calming breath, he walked to the door about to knock when it opened and Sho stalked out holding a sodden paper towel in one hand and his cup in the other.
“Aiba-san…”
“Um…Sakurai-san…I…Um...You…I thought you said you had to go back to work?”
“I did, I mean I do…But I was distracted…” Sho grunted pushing the paper towel and cup in his direction before muttering “…Tonight…When I’ve finished work…Would you care to join me for a meal in town?”
“I…Um…” Masaki stammered in amazement at the unexpected offer not sure how he was meant to respond to it not knowing if Sho was being genuine in his offer or not.
“I’m sure that it would do you good to get out a little…”
“I…If you’re…Sure? Then yes…I would like that…”
“Then I will call you later with the details…”
