The word babies echoed around in his brain just as much as the word ‘mine’ had done. How were babies possible? Okay he was sleeping with a siren, that had to lead to some interesting pillow talk but pearl babies wasn’t in any story or legend he had ever heard about before. He looked up at the siren who was watching him with what could only be described as a pride

“Babies?” He repeated dully as if saying the word would confirm it and he wasn’t sure if he could handle that.

“Our babies...” The siren nodded nuzzling against his neck his song sounding out softly and Nino’s brain went fuzzy again his eyes going back down to the pearls. A strange sensation wrapping around his body it was something that he couldn’t place it was too hard to describe.

“But…How? I mean…” Nino blinked for once wishing that he could focus and that the happy fog that was in his brain would leave so he could think more clearly. The siren read his mind and the music stopped and his brain come back into focus. It was slow but the pink fluff cleared and all he could hear was the soft singing coming from the pearls.

“I laid them before I brought you into the cave…It was a gamble but I knew that you would be able to give them the spark they needed…” The siren told him softly pulling him back to the bed and making him sit down his hand moving up and down his back “You don’t remember do you?”

“Remember what?” Nino asked his confusion growing as he looked at the sirens blue eyes. They seemed to be trying to tell him something, something that he had forgotten and a faint murmur started in the back of his mind something that he still couldn’t focus on it

“…I thought…I see…I thought that because you wanted me you had remembered but…It’s no matter…Close your eyes…” The siren said and without question Nino did as he was told and he felt the long graceful fingers of the siren running over his forehead and cheeks before lips came down to kiss at his temples lightly before kissing his nose “Remember…Nino…”

Nino gave a sigh sagging onto the bed another song sounding out around the room before he fell into a bright, warm welcoming light.

Nino’s eyes flickered open when he felt somebody shaking at his shoulders, his eyes focused and he found himself staring at the sleepy face of his older brother

“Toshi…I want to sleep…” He mumbled hugging his pillow more tightly. His nose wrinkling at smell that circled around in the single room that served as living, kitchen and sleeping area for them and their parents. The houses in the dock area were really too close together.

“Wake up, Kazu…Mama wants you to go to the wharf and take dad his lunch…” Satoshi said shaking him again and Nino rolled over letting out a long yawn rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

“And why can’t you do it?” He said with a grumble sitting up and looking around the room, wondering where his mum was until he remembered that it was a Thursday and on Thursday’s his mum did the washing in the wash house along with the other house wives in the area.

“Because little brother dear, I’ve just got in from the early catch and I have to go out again…” Satoshi said flicking his nose and Nino glared as his brother gave a laugh “12 year olds that still go to school can help out on their days off…”

“It’s not my fault that I still go to school! I told mum that I would start working…” Nino pouted, he knew Satoshi was only joking but it still upset him that the brother he idolised would be disappointed in him. Satoshi laughed and then ruffled his hair before moving away from the bed

“I know…But you’re the one that has the best chances of getting out of here…Your teacher is always going on about how well your doing…” He said taking off his dirty fishes outfit before pulling on a cleaner shirt and breeches, his bakery one and Nino smiled. His brother really did work hard for the family while he just went around reading books.

“…” Nino scrambled up from the bed and then washed his face in the bowl of water which was beside the window and Nino looked around at the busy street as he thought about what he wanted to say.

“Kazu… Don’t pout...It’s a good thing…” Satoshi told him before heading to the door and pulling it open “Take the lunch to Dad…We can talk later...”

“Okay, Satoshi” Nino nodded pulling off the oversized nightshirt and pulling on a coarse brown one. He grabbed the crust of bread, slab of rubbery cheese and carton of milk before heading out. The only children that were running around where those barely out of their mother’s arms the rest were in work or begging. He knew what Satoshi was saying about him being the one that would get out of the docks but there was so much that his brother didn’t know about him. He hated the ocean the smell of it the creepy way that the water ran thickly around the wooden frames like a thick smelling soup. He knew this place like the back of the back of his hand and he knew where his dad would be. He walked as far away from the edge as possible and tried to not look through the cracks under his feet.

He was about half way to his father’s work place when he heard it, a soft singing. It was beautiful but also sounded terrified. He looked around quickly his brow creasing as he tried to find out where it was coming from. Slowly he moved towards the edge of the dock. He took a deep breath and peered over the side his stomach churning as he looked down into the almost black water. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting but it wasn’t a boy

“Are you okay?” He shouted panic coming into his chest as the boy’s head bobbed up and down and he realised that he was caught in a fishing net “Hey…Can you hear me?” he shouted again looking around for something to help fish him out. Beside the dock was a ladder and dropping down his father’s lunch he scrambled down the ladder wincing as the cold water sloshed around his foot “I’m coming…” He said ignoring his own discomfort. The water was now up around his thighs and using one hand he reached out to grab the boy’s arm. He wasn’t able to pull him over because of the net and giving a grumble he completely let go of the side and was thankful for Satoshi’s swimming lessons. He pulled out his knife and sliced open the net finally managing to get his arms around the boy and pulled him back to the ladder gasping as some of the foul water found its way into his mouth.

Nino stared at the ladder and then at the boy he was wondering how he was meant to be able to get both of them up when the boy’s arms curled around him and held him tightly making it possible to struggle up the wooden ladder and back onto the dock. Once there he was at a loss again and he just turned the boy onto his side and stroked his back until he gave a gasp and jumped into a startled position staring at him, his eyes wide and fearful. Nino blinked rubbing his temples with wet hands as the music he had heard started to get louder around him.

“Please…Don’t hurt me…”  The music seemed to beg and Nino’s mouth dropped open

“You…You’re a siren aren’t you?” He whispered his voice shaking. The boy’s beautiful blue eyes flashed for a moment and his tongue darted over his lips before slowly giving a nod

“Yes…Please…Don’t hurt me…”

“I won’t I promise I won’t hurt you…” Nino promised slowly wondering if he was going crazy. He had learnt about sirens with his teacher but he had never expected this.
