“Are you okay?” Jun asked after they had been marched around the palace and manhandled by at least a dozen people who would be creating their clothes for tomorrow’s ball. Kazu found it strange that they were doing everything so close to the day but he supposed that it was due to him being sick and confined to his room but it had been a few days since he had been sick so he didn’t understand the rush now. “Sprite?”
“…Yes...I am fine…” Kazu smiled blindly not wanting to cause any trouble but the stare that Jun gave him had him admitting in a soft voice his hand covered gently by that of the older man. His short fingers were completely hidden from view and Kazu found it strangely comforting “I am fine…Just a little tired…”
“Then we will stop…” Jun said with determination looking up and daring his brothers to argue. To Kazu’s surprise both Ethan and Jonah held up their hands in a submissive pose. Seemingly satisfied with their actions Jun stood up and helped Kazu to his feet walking him gently away from the group who were happily discussing colours and fabrics “I am not having you tired out before tomorrow…”
“But…Do they not need…” Kazu asked with some small confusion knowing that they were still going to be needed for the fitting. He hadn’t been granted many made to measure clothes before the ones in his trunk were his brother’s…His half-brother’s cast-offs changed to fit him by his mother and her maids.
“They have our measurements, our input is no longer required or desired trust me…” Jun chuckled leading him out of the room and down the large long picture gallery that was set out like a long corridor and had large portraits of all of the Ohno-Matsumoto family. “One day your picture will be here…Next to mine…” Jun hummed thoughtfully waving his hand up at the wall where an imposing looking picture of Jun was set. Kazu had seen the picture several times now but this was the first time he had actually studied it and he had to admit that it was a beautiful thing that captured his husband well. He was standing beside a window looking out into the distance something like a scowl on his face. The look was something that Kazu would have feared once but now he knew that it was the look that Jun carried whenever he was shy and he gave a smile nodding absently as he thought of how much he liked that look. “Sprite…You are looking happy now but wait until you have to pose several times a day until father deems it perfect…”
“Your father…He painted that?” Kazu asked wondering why he was surprised when he had already seen the beautiful paintings that he had done in the servant’s passages. Jun shook his head his arm slipping around his shoulders as he led him away from the painting and down the long corridor as he gave a sigh and told him quietly;
“…No…My portrait was painted by my brother Jonah…”
“Jonah?!” Kazu gasped unable to hide his surprise that the man would have resisted the urge to paint something embarrassing on the painting. “Then he has your father’s talent…”
“Indeed he does…Something that I admit caused me much envy…I long to be a painter like my father…But I could never capture it…”
“Because my son you lacked the patience to try…” Satoshi chuckled coming over to them as they left the grand gallery. “I was looking for you, Kazunari…I thought to rescue you from the clutches of my sons but it seems Jun already saved you…”
“I…Yes…My king…”
“Satoshi…Please…Come with me and we shall have a game before the guests begin to intrude…” The king smiled coming to his other side and marching them through the palace corridors and towards his rooms while Kazu swallowed down his nerves wishing that Masaki would be coming but so far nobody had said anything about inviting him and he knew that his letter wouldn’t have reached his friend yet “Your shadow is welcome to join us though I hope he will not try to help…”
“Have no fear of that I will sit quietly and watch you amuse yourselves…” Jun laughed not even bothering to try and deny his lack of skill at the game of chess and Kazu smiled enjoying the banter while wishing that he could see his friend wanting to tell him how much things had improved between him and Jun. Jun who squeezed his hand gently to draw his attention to him. Kazu flushed brightly at the expression that was in his husband’s face. “I will support you in your victory husband, too long has my father reigned unhindered a few losses are good for him…”
“Indeed but I am determined that today I will recover my title…” Satoshi laughed softly as he pushed open the door of his study the chess set already set out. “Shall we, Kazunari?”

Masaki tried to sit still in the carriage but it had been a long drive and his nerves were getting the better of him. Sakurai was beside him his arm around his shoulders snoring lightly while the book that they had been reading until the light had vanished plunging them into almost darkness with only the small candles chasing away the shadows. Hercules was laid out on the far side of the carriage chewing on a pair of old socks that Sakurai had given him to chew on telling him that his teeth would be developing and need to chew to keep the irritation down. The carriage rolled to a stop and Masaki turned to the window peering out into the twilight his breath catching in his throat as he saw the palace rising up from the snow covered ground. Lanterns lit the path ways and all around the outside of the building that was a creamy colour deep shadows playing on the surface.
“It seems that we have arrived…” Sakurai murmured sleepily from beside him while Hercules gave a yapping bark jumping around on the chair now his tail wagging furiously. “Are you nervous, my love?”
“…A little…But…I am here for Nino and that is what will keep that at bay…Um…Will I disgrace you…In this outfit?” Masaki asked looking down at the clothes that he was wearing. He had been sure about it earlier that day but now he felt as if he was wearing cast-offs again. Sakurai gave a laugh grabbing his hand and kissing it gently as he shook his head gently saying;
“You could never disgrace me my love, you are so handsome…You will out shine anyone in the room…Now come on let us get in where it is warm…”
Sakurai exited the carriage first and then held out his hand to Masaki who used it as a support to alight from the carriage onto the wet but thankfully uncovered stone driveway. Hercules followed out behind them almost tripping over his own feet in his excitement and Masaki chuckled picking the up and hooking on the lead and walking with his husband towards the grand entrance of the palace. A young butler with a wig of white hair bowed to them at the door and then motioned for him to follow him down the hall not even looking twice at Hercules. Masaki stayed as close as he could to his husband his eyes darting around in fear wishing that he was back in his happy little home with his husband. They walked through the network of corridors and were led to a white door with a gold handle. The butler bowed opening the door with a click announcing their presence loudly to those in the room with a firm;
“Lord Sho Sakurai and his husband Lord Masaki Sakurai…”
“Masaki?” A soft voice whispered and Masaki looked forward seeing the strange sight of his friend sitting in front of a chessboard with the king in front of him and his husband the prince standing at his side. Kazu blinked a few times his mouth dropping open before he jumped up from the chair almost screaming “Masaki!”
