Our First Summer part Sixty-four

krystalkatzficzSho watched the door nervously looking for his father hoping that he and Nino didn’t come to blows. Masako was trying to talk loudly to Jun who was looking just as nervously while dragging his spoon around in a bowl of soggy looking bran flakes with dried banana. Masami was spoon feeding Hiro and making weird cooing noises that Sho hoped and prayed Masako would never copy. The door opened and the whole table looked up with interest only to sag and sigh when it was just a party of teenagers.
“I am sure they are fine...” Hiro murmured softly his voice cutting through the tension that was hanging over the table and like a bunch of clones they all nodded their faces glum. Sho’s eyes went back to the door and his heart skipped when this time he saw his father and Nino walking in. Their faces were pale and their eyes were a pinkish colour but other than that there seemed to be no other ill effects in fact both men looked like they were lighter in their steps. Jun fidgeted in his seat like he was torn between standing and sitting and Sho smiled surprised at how concerned he was.
“Hey JJ were you a good guard puppy?” Nino asked ruffling the teenager’s hair before sitting own in the chair next to him and pouring milk onto his own flakes “Sorry for making you wait puppy” Sho laughed at the fond but irritated expression that crossed over Jun face. His eyes went to his father who was smiling, it wasn’t a completely relaxed smile but it was more than he was expecting.
“Do you want some breakfast dad?” He asked getting to his feet and Ohno nodded thankfully sinking down into the remaining chair. Sho squeezed his shoulder and then hurried over to the buffet happy that Masako followed after him.
“Things seem to have been worked out between them, ne?” She said hopefully her arm sliding around his waist as he picked out his dad’s favourite foods which, for such a small man, was a lot. Sho gave a nod and kissed her cheek.
“Better than I thought it was going to be yesterday...” He answered and Masako sighed nodding her head holding to him tightly as they walked back to the table surprised to hear a round of weak laughing and Nino pouting his arms folded over his chest.
“I still think you should have told me...I’m meant to be your best friend...”
“Stop being a child...And eat your breakfast...” Masami said with a roll of her eyes as Sho sat the plate in front of his dad who smiled gratefully taking a fork. “When was meant to tell you...?”
“I take it you found out mum and Uncle Hiro is expecting a baby?” Masako said sitting on Sho’s knee instead of her chair wrapping her arms around his throat and Sho smiled hugging her tightly and kissing her cheek. Nino rolled his eyes giving a fake pout that was cut short when Jun rammed a spoon of cereal into his mouth.
“Yes...And his acting the way that I thought he would like an overgrown baby that’s lost his dummy...”
Masami muttered and Sho laughed watching his father. Ohno was eating his breakfast every now and then going to Nino and Jun who were acting like teenagers in love feeding and grinning at each other. They weren’t being half as bad as they normally were but Sho was imagining it through his father’s eyes and he knew that it would be painful. “I was going to tell you privately but with things being at they are we didn’t have time, I’m sorry...”
“It’s okay...You’re right I’m just being a baby...” Nino muttered swallowing down his food and getting to his feet holding his hand out to Hiro “Congratulations, my friend...”
“Thank-you, if the child turns out as well as Masako-chan I will be happy...” Hiro said and Sho had to agree another child like Masako would be a dream. He hoped his own children would turn out like their mother.
“You wouldn’t be saying that if you heard her when she was three...” Nino shuddered sitting back down and Masami let out a snort playing with the table cloth.
“When she first learnt to talk...Who taught her that again?” Masami asked and Nino pulled a face his tongue sticking out as he said,
“You...”
“Why what did I say?” Masako asked with her head tilted her eyes going from her father and then mother and to Sho’s surprise Masami blushed and then looked down at the table before answering with a small
“Bum bandit...”
“What?” Sho, Masako and Jun all gasped and Nino laughed loudly draining his drink.
“Bum bandit...We were young and well we liked to tease each other...” He said and Sho nodded rolling his eyes, it sounded like something that they would do “We stopped after Masako called her grandpa ‘Bum’...”
Those around the table nodded and Sho watched his father finish his breakfast and then push his plate away. He drank his coffee and then coughed lightly getting to his feet.
“Oh-chan...” Nino murmured lightly the fun atmosphere leaving the table again and Ohno gave a small smile shaking his head rubbing his puffy eyes,
“I’m still a little hung over so I’m going to have a nap and then get ready to leave...” he said and Sho motion for Masako to get up and then got to his feet preparing to go with him “Sho you should stay with her...”
“No, I’ll come and make sure you take some painkillers...” Sho said stubbornly and Ohno smiled with a nod
“Okay...I’ll see you all before you go...” He murmured giving a polite bow and Sho smiled kissing Masako’s cheek and then following his father out of the room. They were alone in the elevator before either of them spoke and when he did it was Ohno that broke the silence “Nino and I have decided that we are going to be friends...It’s understandable because of everything that has happened between us...”
“Are you okay with that?” Sho asked and Ohno sagged a little giving an almost overly flamboyant shrug his lip trembling a little bit and Sho smiled slipping his arms around his shoulders holding him closely.
“I have to be...I don’t want to hurt him any more than I have done already...” Ohno mumbled his head flopping down onto his shoulder “He’s keeping me on at his agency but he’s getting me a new manager...”
“I’m glad that you’re both being grown up about this...” Sho mumbled and Ohno let out a moist laugh twisting his face so that he could look up at him with a raised eyebrow.
“You may be taller than me but I’m still your dad you know...” He said and Sho rolled his eyes letting out a laugh.
“I know but you’re an artist first...Where are you going?” He asked a knot of worry in his stomach growing when Ohno replied with a mumbled,
“Nino is lending me one of his apartments, I’m going to stay there for a bit and sort my head out...”
“Maybe I should come with you...”
“No, you should stay here and enjoy your time with Masako-chan...You’ve just got in engaged and with all the mess me and Nino’s put you through you haven’t had chance to enjoy that yet...” Ohno murmured shaking his head and Sho smiled surprised and happy his dad was thinking about that “I’ll be fine...Like you said I’m an artist, I’ll focus my pain into some art and then I’ll be as right as rain again...”
“You will call me...Every day right, dad?” Sho asked unable to shift the nerves that he was feeling. He didn’t think his dad was the suicidal type but he was an artist and they were known for being sensitive.
“I’m not going to do anything...I’ve already promised Nino that I will send him a message every day and I know that Masami will ring me...” Ohno smiled as the elevator pinged announcing that they had reached their floor
“I still want you to either ring or message me...” Sho muttered as they walked to the bedroom and Ohno let out a laugh nodding his head
“Of course I will...I’m going to get over this, it will take some time but I’ll find away and then I’m going to enjoy my life...” He said confidently his hands clenching at his sides “I’ve wasted so much of it doing what I thought was right...Don’t do that...Please Sho learn from my mistakes...”
