Nino sighed stretching his back over the hard table and staring up at the enchanted ceiling he had been that way for quite some time and now the clouds had gone replaced by stars that were still spelling out the same message. ‘HELP ME’. No matter how many times he willed it to give him more information they didn’t change and he gave a tiny bitter growl.
“How…How am I meant to help you?” Nino asked sulkily looking up at the blinking, winking stars his chest rising and falling slowly. McGonagall had summoned him into her office after lunch requesting an explanation that he couldn’t give though he had to agree with her that it was strange that clouds were starting to finally voice the pain that the school was feeling just a day after he had arrived.
“Do you really have no idea?” A silky sounding voice said somewhere top his right and Nino gave a loud startled shout that was actually closer to a scream before he realised who had spoken.
“Professor Snape…Um…Hi” He said jumping into a sitting position so fast all of his joints popped loudly and he gave a wince. Not even thirty yet and he was clicking like an old man. Why was he had been reduced to a bumbling idiot and a nervous wreck around the other man? He thought giving groan as he fluffed out his hair “No, I’m sorry sir…”
“You sound like one of the students…’Sir’ and ‘professor’” Snape growled out and Nino flinched a little biting his lips.
“Sorry…Um…Snape…?” He said trying it out unable to bring himself to call the potions master Severus with familiarity. Both the way that he had been brought up and his own nerves were preventing that. Snape gave a small nod and then came to rest against the table his arms folding across his chest
“That will do…” He agreed his dark eyes flicking up to the ceiling where the message was shining clearly “So no ideas at all, nothing that could explain why an ancient building suddenly starts writing distressing messages in the sky?”
“Not a single one…” Nino admitted in a whisper, there was one thought that was plaguing him but he really didn’t want to discuss this with anyone yet, it was still too early in his investigation for him to be making accusations or assumptions. No matter how much he really was well and truly stumped for answers. He had thought that by coming here he would instantly find some kind of answer but by being here it was just making it worse, his head was so cloudy with the emotions of the students, teachers, ghosts, picking out the subtler ones of the school was giving him a headache. Sakura Heights had never been alive the way this place was, yes it had thoughts and feelings but they had been basic at best. Here they were so complex it was like trying to study the in workings of a spider’s web while being a fly that was caught in it. It wasn’t impossible but by seeing it so closely it was impossible to see the beginning and the end of the delicate construction.
He could really use some advice from someone that had been here for a long time. At least with the message in the sky Snape seemed to have relaxed his opinion of him and his abilities but he didn’t want to tell him that this might be linked to the one person that Snape had already given up so much of his life to protect. The best thing for now was for him to keep an eye on the boys and wait until he had more to go on. “Um…Si-Snape…May I ask you a question?”
“You have just asked me one so I am sure that you can ask another…I’m listening…” Snape said inclining his head though he was looking now looking at a fixed point on the Slytherin table his long stained fingers tapping against his arm.
“Why did you come back to Hogwarts after the war?” Nino asked thinking about every article that he had read. ‘What are you going to do now?’ was something that had been asked a lot in the weeks and months after he had gotten out of the hospital and the answer had always been the same ‘What I want’ and Nino had never been able to understand why after that he come back.
“Because this is what I want…” Snape shrugged and Nino finally allowed his eyes to rest on the scar on his neck. The snake had left a horrible mess but the empath knew that it wouldn’t be the only scar that the potions master had on his skin. A flush worked its way up his throat and found its way onto his cheeks as he thought about the man naked and he did his best to push it away hoping to merlin and every other wizard in history that Snape wasn’t using Legilimenacy and couldn’t see what he was thinking about right now.
The potions master was in no way attractive, with sallow skin and hooked nose, his hair was greasy from potion brewing and his fingers were stained from ingredients but as an empath Nino had learnt long ago that physical appearances mattered very little. It was his emotions that were important and underneath all the suspicion and self-loathing Snape had some of the most fragile and beautiful emotions that he had ever felt. “Is something wrong?”
“…Um…No…Sorry I didn’t mean to stare but the scar… How did you survive the attack…?” Nino mused. Snape’s hand flew to his neck his thumb brushing the mattered skin as he righted himself in such a stiff way it looked like his spine had been made out of a rod “I’m sorry…That was thoughtless of me, you probably don’t like to talk about it…But…I’m so amazed and in awe of you…”
“Have you come to tease me? I thought your duty was to find out what ails the castle not to act
like a teenager with a crush…”
“Maybe I am…Or do…Have a crush I mean…” Nino said the words flying out of his mouth before he could stop them and he let out a horrified sound his hand flying to his mouth “Ah…I mean…Crap…That isn’t the reason that I came though...Something is wrong with Hogwarts…”
“You just thought that you would use the opportunity to tease the greasy bat from the potions room?” Snape sneered and Nino shook his head jumping down from the table and walking to him.
“What? I have never once thought of you as a bat…You already know that…And your hair…Who wouldn’t have greasy hair from working with potions all day…? I think it’s actually pretty cute, my grandfather he worked with potions too…He said that they were a nightmare for your hair so he always shaved his off…” Nino said wondering why he suddenly had verbal diarrhoea. He was never like this, he normally had a very tight rein on his emotions, as an empath it came with the territory, but now he was spilling things out like a man possessed to somebody that he had only met 4 or 5 hours ago. He couldn’t stop himself even though it was very clear from the way Snape was holding his wand and the glare in his face that he was about ready to send him a very powerful hex. “I’ve read all about you and everything that you did… You’re really special…For merlin’s sake why can’t I shut up?” Nino growled out watching as Snape grabbed the nettle tea that he had been drinking before he had arrived. The potions master sniffed deeply and then gave a sigh his emotions churning so fast that Nino couldn’t pick up on them
“…I believe that the students have started their pranks a little early…You’re pretty clueless for a defence teacher…This has very clearly been laced with a love potion…More than likely a Weasley product if I were to hazard a guess…I assume you have read about them in your…Research?” He said with a hiss pouring the contents down onto the flag stone floor where it immediately vanished. “I have sent the sample to my office…”
“…This isn’t a love potion though…I do think you’re really special…You have the most amazing energy that I’ve ever felt…I could spend all day around you…” Nino blabbered, the pain his words were causing him clearly in his eyes wishing that he could stop every embarrassing thing that was slipping past his lips but no matter how much he tried he couldn’t “Snape…Could you hit me with a stunning spell, I bet you’re really good at those…? And I really would like to see you in action…Pictures couldn’t do it justice…”
“Stupefy” Snape said calmly a jet of light coming out of his wand and Nino wanted to thank him as he sank into a wall of black.

A/N: Hmm…I think this might be a bit of a weird chapter but I promise that it will make sense soon…^_^
